This was an excellent lecture on Frankenstein, but really only touches the surface. There's much more about Mary's influences regarding poetry, her relationships with the men in her life (aka: Her Father, and P.Shelly) as well as scientific discoveries of electricity, Egyptology and surgery. To what extent does Mary see herself as the Creature? As an outsider? Misunderstood and unloved, and undeserving of love, doomed to suffer? Good stuff.

could you perhaps tell me more about the egyptology side of it? it would be very helpful, my exam is in a few weeks, thanks

Cool guy. Lecture is mostly rambles and tangents. Fantastic points on context.

As a fellow teacher, I despair that he realised that his class had not read the novel and did not kick them out of the room with a threat of not completing their degree.

As a B.A Literature student at one of the best European universities, I must say that it is impossible to read the whole curriculum. My teacher discusses 2-3 novels every week. Considering the fact that I have 7 different classes that I need to prepare for weekly, there is no way I could read 2-3 novels. My teacher encourages us to read one or excerpts from all. Furthermore, at least in Europe, not reading a novel cannot stop me from completing a literature degree. I could potentially sue my teacher and ask for an examination in order to display my overall literary capabilities. Unless you are graduating precisely in Frankenstein, you cannot fail your degree in literature for not reading it. I am sorry to see that "a fellow teacher" is so narrow-minded. Also, I assume you are going to get extremely sour about what I just said and attempt to correct any grammar mistakes I made. However, English is not my first language so if you wish to correct any bit of my grammar do it in perfect German (my mother language). Have a good day.

No, Cara; it sounds like an impossible course: "stupid course planning" comes to mind. 2-3 novels a week is irrelevant, regardless of ethnicity. I even recorded my own lecture on Frankenstein for my kids (17yo in Australia) and you can have it if you wish. You sound like you are best by an impossible burden. Your grammar did not come to mind at all.

Joe Fitzpatrick sure I’d like to see your lecture. And the course is indeed impossible to follow. My exam is tomorrow.

Joe Fitzpatrick Where can I get access to your lecture please? Am currently studying Frankenstein and I would find some more perceptive and interesting points about it really useful.

Videographers PLEASE SHOW THE SLIDES too You don't actually have to point the camera at the lecturer to hear them.

Video with slides is better, for sure! In this case they are available, just on a different platform. If you go to the link in the description, and then go to "other formats," you can see the video plus slides on "Mediasite." Here is the direct link: mediasitemob1.mediagroup.ubc.ca/Mediasite/Play/79ffe945ed774051913dfd0b23d170921d

No problem--I used to teach in Arts One so I know that other format is available. Unfortunately, KZfaq hides most of the description under videos so this is easy to miss!
