I had the pleasure of meeting Mary Tyler Moore along with her then husband Grant Tinker at the Plaza Hotel in 1971. It was during the second season run of her show. Both she and her husband, as well as the other guests were very kind to us. A treasured moment in my life. I’m glad she found happiness again in her life. ❤

That Girl with Marlo Thomas as a independent single working girl was earlier than the MTM show. I loved them both & they inspired me to be able to experience being an independent working girl supporting myself & living in my own place. My daughter doing the same. You mention That Girl being in some ways a forerunner to MTM and the funny part about it is that while the writers of That Girl gave Ann Marie a steady boyfriend (played by Ted Bessell) from the very beginning of the series, the writers of MTM resisted doing that until near the end when they cast Bessell to be Mary's serious love interest.

I met Mary Tyler Moore when she came to Macy's Herald Square, where I was working at the time. My friend called me downstairs, but didn't tell me WHY! We were backstage at the event where she was appearing and when it was over, I was introduced... I was so flustered that I said, "It's such a pleasure to meet you Miss Petrie!" Well, she just laughed and shook my hand... I was so embarrassed. But, that's just the type of person she was, always so kind... And that Smile!!! 💗

3:31- Those tears when she broke down after telling the others 'Thank you for being my family'!' were for real! Perhaps one of the saddest ironies of her life was that her work family on 'MTM' seemed to have been much more loyal and supportive than her original family had been! Years later she admitted that, contrary to the media coverage at the time, she had NOT wanted to end the show but was essentially told to do it to better market the future syndication package by her then-husband Grant Tinker and the other MTM execs!

No Jenna, Mary was not the first woman on TV to wear pants. Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance, for example, many times wore pants on "I Love Lucy." Mary, however, probably was the first woman to wear pants regularly, and the first to wear *form-fitting* pants, which was a bit controversial at the time, and I believe there was some deal where she was only allowed to wear pants in one scene per episode.

It's amusing that these younger women think Mary was groundbreaking. Her character was just reflecting the times. Wearing pants to work was no big deal. Many women had careers, certainly jobs anyway. Mary was a beloved person and seemed very genuine and kind. That's a much better legacy than being "groundbreaking", which she was not.
