Before The Temptations, before The Jackson 5, and before the Supremes, there was Mary Wells, the Queen of Motown. Those who managed to experience her talent first hand at her prime, describe her as “the Complete Package”. And this is why. To begin with, her angelic warm voice was one of a kind. Her phrasing was impeccable and her vocal presence, outstanding. She proved that you do not have to have range to be a commanding singer. If God wanted heaven to be heard on Earth, He might have conveyed the sounds through the voice of Mary Wells. Her confidence was something else too. As calculative as she was, she boldly approached Berry Gordy to show her prowess in songwriting and ended up securing a contract with his label.

It goes without saying Motown could not be blamed for her failures after leaving Motown. Iis a known fact that Berry Gordy definitely desperately tried to sign Motown. Sadly she listened to the wrong people

she definitely should’ve stayed, but motown did work behind the scenes to sabotage her career. they worked to make sure she wouldn’t be successful & she’s not the only victim of it

I disagree. Mary's leaving Motown was not a good business decision. Mary left with a #1 record still on the charts, and she was touring Europe with The Beatles at the time. Berry begged Mary to stay and renegotiate her contract. That's all on Mary and no good husband she had! After Mary left, you never witnessed Berry begging any artists to stay after that. It's all in Mary's book...strange bedfellows, failed marriages, just all the wrong ppl in Mary's ear!!😢💔🥀🕊🤍

There, I have to agree with you. Mary’s husband was greedy. Mary Wilson had to learn from this. She personally said, in her second book, that women should keep their husbands out of their business affairs (paraphrasing). I would say that it’s rare that a husband/partner/spouse would make a good manager.

Mary Wells along with the Marvelettes & the Miracles put early Motown on the map and yes the 1964 success of the Supremes upset the applecart for many Motown artists, thanks to Berry Gordy.

Mary Wells was so beautiful and GIFTED 😊 such a lovely voice she definitely should have achieved a much longer career as the GREAT vocalist she was 💯💯💥 but like so many great singers she fell victim to extreme Drug addictions and an Horrible Cigarette habit which of course would be the cause of such an early passing 😢 for her, loved MARY'S soft lovely ❤ voice she is so Missed.

It's amazing how people will pay to bury you but not support or help you when you are alive. She should have never had to sue Gordy to get her money. Even when she was sick I'm sure he knew but he did not reach out. I guess one should be happy when they pay for the funeral? What an insult. I absolutely love this channel.

The foolish things some of us can do. Mary was a true star ready to take on the big time. Listen to the B side on her My Guy album. She could handle standards very well with the Motown musicians. She had what it took to be THE star before Diana Ross stepped up to the plate with her pals after Mary left. I read Mary’s autobiography and she continued to make bad moves and decisions. Question is could she have handled the amount of work the Supremes handled becoming superstars? Diana Ross took on that workload becoming anorexic in the process while Florence became an alcoholic so maybe it was best she did leave the company. Who knows. Life can be so unpredictable at times. RIP Ms Wells for I loved so much of your work as a young boy in the early 60s.

Mary Wells was GONE from Motown before Motown promoted the Supremes. "Where Did Our Love Go" was not even released until after Mary was gone. Please get the story straight. Mary Wells did not have a fight with Diana Ross.

I REMEBER LISTENING TO MARY WELLS SINGING "MY GUY" I LOVED HER VOICE MORE THAN I DID LISTENING TO THE SUPREMES. THERE WAS SOMETHING SO BEAUTIUFUL, SINCERE, AND FULL OF SO MUCH WARMTH IN HER VOICE. I AM SURE I CAN SAY MORE, BUT IT WOULD TAKE UP THIS WHOLE PAGE. IT HURTS ME TO HEAR THAT SHE HAD SUCH A HARD TIME IN LIFE. YET, SHE WAS INDEED A VERY STRONG-WILLED WOMAN. IT IS SAD THAT MOTOWN NEVER GAVE HER THE CREDIT OR THE MONEY THAT SHE DESERVED AS A BEAUTIFUL, TALENTED GIFTED SINGER. SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN TREATED WITH RESPECT. IT IS SUCH A SHAME THAT SHE HAD TO TAKE GORDEN AND WHOEVER ELSE SHE HAD TO SUE, TO GET WHAT WAS RIGHTFULLY HERS, RESPECT AND THE RIGHT RECONITION, AND THE MONEY SHE WAS LONG OVERDUE TO HAVE, FOR THE LONG HOURS AND WORK THAT SHE PUT INTO MAKING MONEY FOR HERSELF AND GORDON AND WHOEVER ELSE IN MOTOWN. THOSE WHO LOVED HER VOICE AND HEARD HER SINGING, I AM SURE HAS A LOT TO SAY, WHEN IT COMES TO THE VOICE THAT GOD GAVE HER TO SHARE WITH THIS WORLD. I HOPE THAT SHE GAVE HER LIFE TO CHRIST JESUS BEFORE SHE LEFT THIS GREEDY WORLD. AND GOTTEN "BORN AGAIN". PEACE.

Music has come a long way, but has not changed, cause the songs they sing today would have been marketed and played in brothels,Juke Joints, Whorehouses, Major labels had to do that because of the content of material written.

Listening to someone who shares your bed and is significantly older than you will always lead to demise and ruin. That was the end of her career, everything else was her choice. She should have been giving her royalties when she left, but that old husband would have burned through the whole of her money. As for the Womack brothers, mess, messy, MESSY.
