Teaching children with autism critical life skills from an early age can have a profound impact on their quality of life and independence. In this episode, special education advocate Julie Swanson joins to discuss strategies for teaching life skills to children on the autism spectrum.
Throughout the episode, we emphasize the importance of teaching life skills for all children, regardless of whether they have autism or not.
We touch on the significance of self-care and provide insights into critical life skills necessary for safety, independence, and happiness. We also address the need to incorporate life skills into Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and provide resources to aid in advocating for these skills during IEP meetings. Adding life skills IEP goals may receive pushback from your team, but you do have a legal right to include these goals as we discuss.

I also offer two online courses for parents and professionals: The Toddler/Preschooler course to help young children ages 1-5 showing signs of autism (with or without a diagnosis) and the Verbal Behavior Bundle course to help kids over the age of 6!
Behavior Analyst BACB CEUs and Early Intervention contact hours are also included for professionals.
Whether you have a toddler showing signs of autism or you're a parent or professional helping an autistic child, I encourage you to subscribe to the Turn Autism Around YT channel and join me for videos almost every day that will help you increase talking, decrease tantrums, and improve eating, sleeping, and potty training!
