- About Dr. Mary Claire Haver and The Galveston Diet -
Dr. Mary Claire Haver is a passionate women’s health advocate who believes women in midlife deserve to live their best life. She cuts through fat-shaming and fads, so women are empowered with the science behind anti-inflammation nutrition.
Dr. Mary Claire Haver is a wife, mom, physician, and entrepreneur who has devoted her adult life to women’s health. As a Board-Certified OBGYN in the Houston area, Dr. Haver has delivered thousands of babies, completed thousands of well-woman exams, counseled patients, taught residents, and did everything an academic professor and OBGYN could do.
As her patient population aged, Dr. Haver was overwhelmed with the number of complaints and concerns her patients had with weight gain while going through menopause. For years, she told her patients to eat less and exercise more. It wasn't until she experienced the changes of menopause and mid-life weight gain that she realized this advice doesn't work and ultimately led to her creating and developing a new program, The Galveston Diet.
The Galveston Diet is the first and only nutrition program created by a Female OBGYN, designed for women in menopause. The Galveston Diet helps women reach their health and wellness goals through an anti-inflammatory approach to nutrition. Dr. Haver believes in food's power to combat inflammation and highly recommends the unlimited benefits of intermittent fasting. As part of her ongoing research, she became certified in Culinary Medicine in 2019, specializing in medical nutrition.

You’re lucky if you find a Dr in Washington DC / MD that prescribes them; insurance plans clearly state on their website they do not cover HRT, and BHRT runs in the thousands in pellet form. Dr’s in US use the same big pharma medications to treat everything under the sun. Women deserve better healthcare options!

Depends on your insurance. My insurance will cover oral hormones but not the compounded ones. Testosterone is not covered at all so the cream costs me about $70 a month. The other two $20 total. So $90 a month for hormones. Don’t ever ever ever do pellets or injections for hormones!!! Total malpractice putting your hormones on levels they shouldn’t be in and just a money maker for the provider.

Don’t forget the quarterly labs: anywhere from $1k-$3k if using an HRT practice outside your insurance. My partner gets his blue pills delivered for $5/ 25. God bless misogyny.

Quarterly labs are usually required by a practitioner pushing pellets. Almost useless in perimenopause due to fluctuations. And not the standard of care. Symptoms are treated, not numbers.

I’ve been getting HRT through pellets for 7 years. I’m 63 years old. I have a question about testosterone, I also get testosterone with my estradiol, I take progesterone orally. Outside of a testosterone cream, is there another way to take it? My pellets cost $375 every 3 months. Insurance does not cover it, but this doc. Does not work with insurance. As I’m nearing retirement I would love to find a cheaper alternative or a doc that uses insurance. The most expensive part of all this is the blood work which I do every 6 months.

I am 58, menopausal (haven't had a period in about 5 yrs), but only during the past two ys have seen my hair thinning quite considerably and my cholesterol rise to about 250 (never had it high). Those are my main concerns and I am focusing on my diet and exercise (retired ballet teacher). Very mild and occasional hot flahes, good energy lvls. Obgyn just prescribed patch and pill to help with menopausal symptoms, but here I am, reading the estradiol info pamphlet, and cannot decide whether to take it or not, considering it doesn't seem to help with cholesterol (or hair) and the list of side effects seems too long, including various kinds of cancer, liver, vision problems, high blood pressure (which I am experiencing some now) and thyroid hormone lvls changed... What can estradiol/progesterone do for me at this stage of my life? I'm trying to decide wether the benefits outweigh the negatives. I'd appreciate some thoughts please! Thank you and sorry for the long post.

Where is the solution for those of us who don’t absorb hormones well transdermally? I’ve tried creams, gels and patches and do not absorb enough for them to be effective (18 years post op hysterectomy/BSO). Oral estradiol has some increased risk of blood clotting so that option is not a good one. I do take oral micronized progesterone, that insurance covers. Also, here in the US, we have NO option, other than compounding pharmacies or pellets, for testosterone; testosterone is a game changer for many women, as this is the hormone that we have the most of in our bodies (more than estrogen) - there is no insurance coverage for that and, for many of us, E and P alone doesn’t get the job done.
