I've been a huge U2 fan since 1982 when I first heard of them as a 13 yr old Aussie kid....and then in '83, 'Under a Blood red Sky'...bloody amazing. I watched Live Aid...live, as a 15 yr old, just to see Queen and U2.....I've seen U2 live in concert a few times and I was lucky to see Queen live at Wembley as well, when in the UK playing cricket a couple of years later. I saw U2 on the Pop Mart tour in Brisbane in 1997 when they dedicated this song to Michael Hutchence and yet this may still be my favourite version of this...MJB is amazing....really, what a bloody voice mate....

Some people think U2 is(was)always too pretentious. The fact that they think enough of her and know great artists enough to remake a great song into something even greater reinfoced my opinion of them. One of the best bands of all time and especially since the 80s. Them or REM or Talking Heads or The Pixies

Every time I listen to Mary J Blige's vocals on this version, I am stunned at how powerful and deep the emotion comes across, masterful, talented, and amazing. Her vocal lift on the lyric around 1:15 hints at what is coming back at 2:15 and then the vocal explosion at 3:00 through to the finale. A beautiful, soulful, and powerful performance, one of absolute favorites.

Completely agree Thomas. This song and especially MJB's interpretation and collab with the band, are absolutely stellar. The lyrics, the emotion, everything. Researching how the song came about all those years ago in Berlin (shortly after the Wall came down), and how Mary became aware of the song years later and agreed to do it in tribute, and then this duet! I'm just overwhelmed with gratitude. This song is a masterpiece & a gift from God, that absolutely does it all for me: poetically describes the human condition of disconnection, and provides a call to action for a better future. Consider the use of questions to explore the pathos of the divide and takes ownership (at least in part) - "did I disappoint you? Or leave a bad taste in your mouth? You act like you never had love, and you want me to go without. Did I ask too much? More than alot? You gave me nothing, and that's all I got", and the declaratives pointing to a better mind set: "we're one, but we're not the same, we get to carry eacy other, carry each other, one". All brought to life my Mary's impassioned performance. It's sheer perfection!

Late to the party again. Damn it! She is great! Great song. And Mary makes it that way. You are all correct. Every comment. And she has questions in the song. Meant for us all. What are our answers? If we can blame someone for our shortcomings, well good for us, right? The lepers in our heads may disagree. You got to do what you should. Carry each other! ONE! That is what we have. Since 1992 when Mary released What's the 411 I have been a fan, then I was only 9 years old boppin to 'Real Love'. Didn't know her music would speak volumes in my life. Now I'm a 34 year old woman still a big fan and each of her albums has memories of the different things in life I have encountered. Mary has a power and an energy that glues me to this video every time I watch it.!! You can tell she's deeply feeling the lyrics and music. Bono is still resonating beautifully. Even the rest of the band really starts getting into it when she belts out those notes!! She could command a whole stadium and then some. She's so gifted and beautiful!!

But re-tracing the story of the song itself (there's a documentary on KZfaq about the band arriving in Berlin to record Achtung Baby in dire need of inspriation), and Mary's later discovery of the song asked to sing it in tribute to Bono (forget the occassion), and her agreement to do so, makes this collaboration seems like a series of miracles to me, for which I am grateful! Conocía el tema. Lo escuché mil veces. Cuando apareció esta versión quedé helado. Son dos canciones, One de U2, la hermosa canción que todos conocemos, y lo que arranca a los dos minutos y va a transformar One en otra cosa que ni siquiera se puede explicar. La aplanadora de MJB entra sin permiso a estremecer, apretar y enloquecer el alma con un desparramo de potencia que pocas veces se encuentra en escena. Desde que abre la boca hasta el fin el in crescendo nuncase detiene y te arrastra en su infinita delicia. Muchas gracias MJB.

Completely agree. The serioius of miracles that brought Mary J to this almost forgotten song to do what only she could, is something I am grateful for. She takes a beautiful poem and infuses it with so much passion and soul!! I can't even imagine this song without her version, and all the wonderful covers that it inspired and continues to inspire. Such a beautiful collaboration!
