They didn’t marry until after they settled the issue with the land. Scripture doesn’t say how much time passed between when they asked about the land and the time they married. It seemed to me like some time passed. If they didn’t take care of the situation immediately their fathers land would have parceled out to others. There’s no guarantee the property would have gone to anyone they wanted to marry. The part I find interesting is the fact that a near relative wasn’t put over them. Like their father the one over them would have received the land and arranged for the daughters to marry. They wouldn’t have had a voice in their futures. Once apportioned the promised land was allocated and could not be inter exchanged outside of the tribe to which that land was given. Because that was a law that would never change, these sisters would have demanded that men from their own tribe marry them (their cousins) so that their (the 5 sisters’s) future sons or daughters could inherit their portion Zelophelad’s land from them. In addition to this their sons would inherit their husbands’ (the first cousins you’re implying they were forced to marry) land. They would have wanted to marry in their own tribe. Because of their petition The land could be passed from daughter to her son and so on. If they didn’t ask Moses they would’ve been destitute and been at whatever husband would have them’s mercy.
