Mascara Primers ~ Do They Really Work? | Review of 5 Primers & Demo

Back in January, I asked if there would be interest in a video on mascara primers and several of you said, "yes!" So that is what I'm bringing you today. I've tested 5 primers and definitely have a couple of favorites in the bunch....and one dud. Find out more about these primers and if you really NEED a mascara primer in this video. Hope you enjoy!

Hello Sharalee! I happened to find your channel when I was trying to figure out how to use my Naked Cherry Palette. I have been watching ever since! I love how you do your hair and make up! So beautiful! I actually have a spiky hairstyle as well, just a little bit of a longer version. I get a lot of compliments on it, even after 15 years! I’m a fan of the primer! I haven’t used it in a while, recently tried again and wow! I been missing out don’t know why I stopped! I just didn’t think to use it with other mascaras. I always paired it with the same brand. Loving it again!

I have short, straight lashes and the Loreal primer makes a huge difference for me. I use it every day.

Yaaaa! I’m so happy you like the voluminous primer, I’ve never tried it because like many people I think its a gimmick ti sell more products. I’m at the age 58 tomorrow lol, that my eyes can use a lot of help. voluminous mascara is my favourite. And good prices. Thanks for this video!

The essence one is really nice it is easy to remove AND I have the feeling it conditions my lashes and prevent the mascara drying out my lashes.

I was just telling my sister I tried the Loreal Voluminous Primer and what a huge impact it had! You can't beat the price either, so I expect I'll be purchasing the full size soon!🌻

I use the L’Oréal. Love it. Works great for me. I have used higher priced ones but I found out that L’Oréal was as good if not better

I cannot believe how long and full your lashes are! Back around Christmas time, I noticed that a lot of my lashes on my right eye had fallen out. I had just started using a mascara primer, so I wondered if that could be it. Since then, my lashes started growing back in, but now they're thin again. Yours are beautiful - even with no mascara!

Oh thank you so much!!🥰 Yikes, having a bunch of lashes fall out all at once would scare me too! Personally, I find that most primers actually strengthen my lashes and I seem to lose less lashes....maybe it was just the particular primer you used?? Do you remember which one it was?

I use the CoverGirl amplifying primer as a night mask for my lashes. Really great ingredients for a lash boost but not a primer... Lol. I actually bought it for the purpose of a night mask.

Good afternoon gorgeous. Lancôme is a bit pricy but my sister loves it. I don’t feel the need to use a primer. But if I found some that is affordable then I would consider it. I. Glad you shared what worked and did not. Thank you and have a wonderful weekend. Aloha 🌺

The Lancôme primer is nice but I think you’d get just as good of results with the L’Oréal one....and it’s a lot cheaper!😊 Hope you had a great weekend!🌸

Great video and information! I've just recently restarted using a primer and it happens to be the Loreal Voluminous. It does make a difference.

hello my friend, I also find a real difference with a mascara primer, the best for me is that of dior but very expensive, so I will turn to the one you recommend. and your eyes are 2 sparks, I love, have a great day

Another great Video thank you so much! After reading the reviews below & your excellent advice I’m going to buy Primer!, my eyelashes re quite long...I’m finding it hard to fin a mascara that doesn’t clump!,, will the Primer help with that? Look forward to hearing from yo! ❤️❤️

You are most welcome! I think you will really enjoy a mascara primer! I do think it could help keep the lashes from clumping together as it does kind of help spread out the lashes and get them going in the right direction. It also prevents you from having to do so many coats of mascara so that could also help with the clumping😊

Hi Rhonda! I haven’t used a lash growth serum....yet😘 My bff uses and LOVES the one from Rodan & Fields (RF) and she does have amazing lashes! I have had great success with the RapidBrow serum and they also make a lash serum-RapidLash. It’s a little more affordable than the RF one so that might be worth looking into😊

My first attempt was with Essence but did not care for the formula. I do not curl my eyelashes, so that could have been part of the problem. However, L'Oreal seems to get mascaras right for most people, so I will have to try their primer. I'm still looking for that magic tube of mascara that will give me loooong luscious lashes. I'm dreaming, I think!!! ;D Take care!

I don’t think you are alone in that dream!! Those are the lashes we all want🥰 I do think you will see great results with the L’Oréal primer....it’s very different than the Essence. And yes, curl those lashes, girl!!😘

I've been using the Essence primer and like it but do you feel the origins is the best? My skimpy lashes need all the help they can get. Your lashes look amazing

What about the lash and eyebrow serum can you do a review of them. Rimmel has one and I bought it but haven’t used it yet.

You will have to let me know if you see any results from the Rimmel one! I use the RapidBrow serum on my brows and it has worked amazingly well! I did a review on that one but haven’t reviewed any eyelash growth serums. My bff loves the one from Rodan & Fields but it’s super expensive😊

Do you think you could do another video where you use a "control" eye versus each test? eg. Use two coats of mascara on the control eye and one coat of primer, one coat of mascara on the test eye? I feel like this is more fair because it balances out the extra "coat" applied by adding a primer that could otherwise be mascara.

Do you use a lash comb? Do you feel like you need to comb lashes before applying mascara or in between coats of the mascara? Also do you have to use a lash curler to get your lashes curled or are they natural curled?

Great questions! I do use a lash curler before applying the primer. However, I don’t use a lash comb at all. I find the brush on the mascaras I use to be fairly good at keeping the lashes separated......as long as I don’t wait for the mascara to dry, I usually don’t get clumpy lashes😊

It's interesting that you didn't like LashBlast by Covergirl. It's the only primer in this lineup that is substantially different in formulation from the others. Most of them are a standard oil/wax mixture (think a realllyy thick lotion) but Covergirl's has a high amount of plastic-like polymers that dry down differently than the oil/wax ones.

And yes, that unfortunately means that the other four are essentially the same. Origins, Lancome, L'Oreal and Essence are all basically making the same formula in different tubes. That said, there are variations to every formula and even the smallest changes can often result in dramatically different effects.

I think that's exactly why I didn't like the Covergirl primer because it was different than the others. Each one does have formula variations....just have to choose the one that's right for you.

I was wondering if you know a good drugstore white mascaraprimer that stays white cuz I honestly want my lashes to be pure white ?

Hmmm....I think the L’Oréal Voluminous primer would be the best bet....I’ve not experimented with it that way but perhaps if you do a couple of coats it will remain white?

I would love to find a primer that works for me. I have to curl my lashes and the minute I hit them with any primer I have tried or any mascara that is not waterproof, the curl immediately falls out, even if I have curled them with heat. I have found one product I would love to try but can't find it anywhere so if anyone sees it, give me a holler. It is Shiseido Nourishing Mascara Base. I have on order another product that I'm going to test and that is Grande Cosmetics GrandePrimer. The struggle is real! :P

Oh I can only imagine how frustrating that must be!! That is crazy that the Shiseido product appears to be off the market....fingers crossed the Grande Cosmetics one will work for you!!

@@SharaleesBoxOfChocolates Thanks! The description says that the GrandePrimer is "water resistant" so we will see how resistant it is! LOL Just curious ... have you tried any of the black primers? Estee Lauder makes The Little Black Primer and I see that a few others have jumped on the tinted primer bandwagon. I would think that would make it easier to put on mascara and not have to worry about covering all the white.

A couple years ago I did try the Benefit They’re Real Tinted Primer and that was pretty good.....totally forgot about that until someone else inquired about tinted primers😉 I’ve not tried the Estée Lauder one but Emilynoel83 talked about that maybe 2 years ago and she really liked it. You’ll have to let me know just how water resistant the Grande Cosmetics one is!

Oh that’s a bummer!! You may want to try the Origins primer then.....ingredients might be less irritating for you😊

I have a longtime and constant problem with mascara smudging. Within hours it's all moved from my lower lashes to my lower lids. 🦝 I hope a primer will help it stay for a few hours at least.
