Which pilot license do you need when you want to become an airline pilot? The kind of pilot license you need depends on your requirements. Do you prefer to take your friends along for a weekend trip while there is not a single cloud in the sky? In this video, I discuss the different types of pilot licenses including the LAPL, PPL, CPL, MPL, ATPL and help you decide which one suits your needs. I also discuss the MCC, JOC, IR, TQ and a lot more.

In Russia, having a PPL, you can make flights, with an additional mark for cases: - instrumental flight - flight in the night - multy engines These options do not require a CPL, but require the appropriate qualification. CPL can be obtained at a state flight school or a state University for free, on a competitive basis. However, you will have to live almost in barracks conditions. Conditions are almost like in the army. And after receiving the CPL, you can get a job with Russian airlines, where you will already need to be trained for a certain type of flight. The only problem now is that it is not possible to switch to another country's airline. Russia has simply stopped providing information about pilots ' licenses to other countries in order to avoid pilot leaks.

Love your videos. Great content. Only addition would be starting with a glider pilot licence with TMG (Touring Motor Glider) >24 hours, this gives deduction in flight requirements for both LAPL and PPL. Price per hour is 50-70% lower to rent plane than normal SEP. A way to build early stage experience at low cost. Works in EU, not sure about US.

Thank you for making this video, it's very clear and concise, and provides the necessary information. My only critique would be to perhaps be clear that the licenses you are referring to are the ones mandated by EASA (I'm guessing they are relevant to the European Union?). Here in the United States where we are under the FAA, the licenses are a little different (for example, there is not a multi-crew license in the USA).

With a PPL You can legally fly any SEPL plane, without the need of a check-ride. It depends on the owner of the plane if he wants to be sure you can safely fly his plane.
@Soordhin
@Soordhin 4 жыл бұрын
Just one tiny thing. Pilot licenses in the EU are valid for life. The ratings on it however are not. So the license will not be revalidated or its duration extended, only the ratings will be. The MPL training used to be bound to a sponsoring airline, and in general that is still true. However, switching from one sponsoring airline to another is possible. After successful completion of the linetraining, at which point the MPL is granted, the license is not bound to any specific airline anymore. I have quite a few MPL colleagues that switched airlines without a problem, in some cases several times. Technically there is no "frozen" ATPL, it is a CPL with ATPL theory credit which can be transferred with a somewhat expanded normal LPC (license proficiency check) into a full ATPL. One thing to be aware of is the fact that some EASA countries differentiate between COP and PIC ratings. COP of course stands for copilot or second in command, PIC for pilot in command. Even though one has an ATPL and could therefore work as a captain, without a PIC rating that would be impossible. Usually to obtain a PIC rating the pilot in question has to done left hand seat training and checks before getting the PIC rating. Most EASA countries however do not do that. Funny thing, if one did his licenses before the EASA structure came into force, the way into the flightdeck of an airliner was probably different. For example, although i held a PPL for my gliders license, i never officially held any other license than an ATPL for powered aircraft, that was the first license i had after the roughly 200 hours of flight training in an abinitio course. Technically in so far as we had to obtain a US PPL during that training to allow two trainees to fly together without an instructor on board.
@deineroehre
@deineroehre 4 жыл бұрын
And what happens when the PIC is seriously ill and can't fly anylonger? Is a COP with frozen ATPL suitable and allowed to work as the pic, if there is no other pilot by chance on the plane? I would think yes, because a COP will be one day a PIC and therefore is better than an law-abiding crashed airplane...
@Soordhin
@Soordhin 4 жыл бұрын
@@deineroehre Of course a COP is trained to safely land a plane without another pilot if needed. Same as any other FO. His rating is just limited to the role as FO or SIC. He basically just needs a new rating as PIC (which is abbreviated if on the same airplane as before) before he can work as a captain. By the way, its similar for captains: they are not allowed to fly from the right hand seat anymore, unless they received special training for that.

This was very informative, and as a person who loved flying with the ATC in the UK when I was younger I am a little disappointed to find out that I was told that I needed a degree in both mathematics and physics to be able to fly. However, I am beginning to think that it was due to the officer entry in the RAF that required that, not the just being able to fly aspect. I am now 38 and still want to fly. I got decent grades in both mathematics and physics at high school, and am literally kicking myself that I did not pursue it further when I wasn't doing great in A-level physics. I always wondered why half life of radiation had anything to do with flying. It is nice to see the different licences required laid out with minimum requirements for each activity. Had I known any of this sooner in my life I would have certainly pursued this eagerly. Money is an issue, but not as massively as it could be, it just means it would take around 3 years for me to have enough to fully pay for PPL and CPL aspects. Is that a decent timeline or is that too long? I feel I dropped the ball on this one and have potentially missed out on doing something I absolutely loved as a living.

This may have changed, but what happened to Single piston engine, twin piston engine, single turboprop, twin turboprop, and jet engine ratings? A lifetime ago when I was involved with the airline industry, a person needed a IFR commercial pilot's license, with req. hours, and a twin turboprop, and a jet engine rating. Plus additional ground schooling and medical, before being considered with an airline. A lot of pilots I worked with, would fly with regional carriers flying turboprops like ATR, DASH-8's, EMB's, B19000's or SAAB's. Some pilot's would work cargo companies to help build hours in bigger jet's. I'm sure everything has changed since then. I enjoy your videos. You're very lucky to do what you love

I can understand people love to fly a jet and become a professional pilot just because they love to fly. On the other side, using this amount of money to take an education which can not be used to anything else that flying an airplane is insane (of course IF you just love it, do it!). If you use the same amount to educate yourself in a lot of other professions, you are able to use that education with a wide range of companies with a lot of different forms of business, with normal working hours, a family life and weekends for fun. This do not mean that I do not respect pilots and their jobs, I just want to tell young people to look at both sides of the coin. When you are 45 years old, and a captain, and still have 20 more years with the "bus" the glory might have faded. And to the DPG: Your videos are both educating and made with a smile so it can't be better then this! Keep up the good work!!! Regards Terry

Your eyesight includes near and far vision, colour blindness, depth perception and a few more. You need to do a drug test, blood test, dental examination, chest X Ray, ECG, and some more, and finally an interview with an Aviation Medical Examiner, basically a doctor specialised in Aviation Medicine. The procedure is pretty much same everywhere in the world, with certain variations. And yes, you can use glasses as long it can be corrected to 20/20 (6/6) vision. Hope this helps.

How did you get where you are today? What is your current pilot rank, although I see 3 rings on your shoulder so I guess it’s Senior First Officer. Are you going for a Captaincy? All the best. Lee

LAPL allows for few additional ratings and does not allow you to fly anywhere in the world; only in Europe. There is also a limitation on the maximum take-off weight of 2000kg and a total 4 persons on board compared to PPL, which is from the top of my head, somewhere around 6000kg and no limit on the number of persons.

Some basic differences between PPL and LAPL: PPL Aircraft Restrictions: Max Take-Off Weight: 5,700 Kg PPL Additional Ratings: Multi-Engine, Instrument Ratings, Night Rating, Aerobatics PPL region: worldwide LAPL Aircraft Restrictions: Max Take-Off Weight: 2,000 Kg Max Passengers: 3 LAPL Additional Ratings: Night Rating, Aerobatics LAPL region: Europe For example you can't fly a Beechcraft Baron or a Cessna 425 or 402 with an LAPL.

If you have a MPL & flying for a particular airline is it worth "upgrading" to ATPL & what would be the requirements & costs for that?

Thanks for the video, I do have one question, does a PPL have an option for an IR, and if so which medical is required. thanks.

Frank Pico you can do IR or Enroute IR followed by Competence Based IR after PPL (if you have the required minimum hours after obtaining your PPL). Medical = class 2

I’m 45 too and started college for private pilot ground school in 2019 and dropped then came back in 2021 and thinking about dropping again. I’m not sure if I’m being realistic with all this considering my age, zero hours, cost, experience and ultimate goal of becoming a cargo pilot. :-(
