Additionally and to prevent any false readings from both MAF sensors once cleaned, it is wise to also use an auto electric contact cleaner on the electrical contacts where dirt can and DOES build up, inc. condensation from the engine heating up/coolling down. It is also wise to check every electrical connection in the engine bay that is accessible from the top and underneath annually and this prevents premature false readings on OBD scanners attributed to electrical systems.

Hi, what happens if I just disconnect the maf? Can I then determine whether the sensor is dirty of broken

Hi Anke, yes correct. You can determine that. If the car is running better with it off then your maf is dirty/broken

Rather than replace your MAF sensors, first clean them and run a diagnostic to see which is providing less or more Air. It may also be worth simply checking your Air Filters or even your Air Intake Bodies for slight cracks as they are made from plastic and can crack from the intense heat from the engine bay area.
