Maserati released their MC20 supercar a few years ago, but now offers the Cielo, hard top convertible. We were given the car with strict instructions to not compare it to any of its obvious competitors. But that got us thinking about other far cheaper ways to feel Italian and drive a convertible. My dad had a 1968 Mistral. It was the last Maserati roadcar to use the inline 6 from Fangio's WDC winning F1 car. I can still remember how it sounded.

Great non-comparison. I cross-shopped the Miata RF with the MC20 Cielo, and realized that I was going to be about $300,000 short for the Maserati. So, the RF provides all of the targa'ish experience with none of the prestige or engine sound. It is still such a stunning car, though. I have to agree on the color: I'm glad it exists, but it's not the color I would choose.

I can't believe the cabin wind noise in the MC20! That's pretty bad but the brakes can probably be adjusted as Todd mentioned, It shouldn't be necessary on a new car. It does look great. Thanks for another great video and awesome you ran into Matt with Smoking Tire!

I took my Abarth 500 in for service today at my local Alfa Romeo dealer in Van Nuys, CA and there were 4 MC20’s on the lot. That’s a sexy car but I’d rather have the Abarth 124.

Actually planned on getting one of these. It would be my third Maserait! Need to check on the Brake fix and the Noise fix though. And would want some rubber pads in those aluminum pedal channels. Trident!

I've owned 4 convertibles, so I guess I am a convertible guy. The Fiata is on the list of potential cars someday because of the ability to tune that turbo engine. I've seen some fun looking builds that people have done.

I saw an mc20 convertible at a cars and coffee this summer and it was definitely stunning to look at. A lot of carbon(maybe a touch too much) with a deep red paint.

The rolling front 3/4 view of the Maserati really shows off the fender arches and front overhang. A bit of Speed Racer’s Mach5 in that look.

This was a very well taken review. Thank you. I can see the idea of skipping on the expensive carbon bits, but because the only reason I am seriously considering this car is for its looks, I would actually pay for the carbon bits. But the new DB12 is a very compelling alternative.

Great job as always. Now lemmie get this straight, the MC20 runs a little over 5 C8 monetary units. This harkens back to your excellent “Price of Fun” piece, but I suspect the Vette would provide most if not all of the fun of the MC20. And it pains me to say that as a Ford guy. ;)

LOL! I have a 124 Abarth and love it. It's the auto too (aghast!). I compared it to the ND Miata. If I'd compared it to the MC20 I would have been rather disappointed too.

I slightly prefer the styling of the Fiat/Abarth over the Mazda, and I really liked that engine in the 500 I drove many years ago. I guess you wouldn’t buy the Abarth if there wasn’t a dealer within 200 miles of where you live, though?

I like it well enough. I own an NC3 Miata and a 500 Abarth, so I've had experience with the Fiata's components, lol I've driven the Fiata as well as my uncle has one. That engine in the 500 was a load of fun, but the Fiata , it's just ok for me. I prefer having more or a Rev happy consistent (albeit low) torque experience than that peaky torque.

You guys did not do your homework; that engine is a slightly massaged Giulia Quadrifoglio engine with different heads. This car was an upcoming Alfa model... The prototypes driving around in Italy had blacked out Alfa badges inside and out.

Exactly, an owner of an MC20 stated that the suspension parts even had Alfa Romeo stamped on them. Maserati does not deserve the recognition it gets from this car and for uneducated KZfaqrs and reviewers to call it original is a farce. What a horrible loss this car was for Alfa 😢

Would love to hear your comparison between the MC20 and a C8. I love the look of the MC20 (and the MC12 before it), and the speedometer went up way quicker than my C8 north of 100 MPH, but... is it worth 4x the money? That's a hard no in my book, interesting in your opinion.

Guys isn’t the Maserati Nettuno engine a breathed-on Alfa V6 (not that that’s a bad thing regardless) ? Henry Catchpole chucklingly suggested it seemed “uncannily similar” without directly stating what he clearly believed. He also made it clear he’d been heavily briefed by Maserati’s PR team…hmmm.

They are both derived from the F154 (the Ferrari v8 on the California T and the sf90), not necessarily the same program though. And the heads on the Nettuno engine are quite bespoke (the pre chamber and a 11:1 compression ratio). But your point stands, technically both engines (Alfa and Maserati) deprive from the same Ferrari V8 and they share a lot of the bottom end design.

It also has things in common with the latest versions of the Ferrari F140 V8. Most of the V8s have a 86,5 mm bore, like the Alfa 690T V6. The Nettuno has a 88 mm bore. So probably the Alfa Romeo engine was the starting point, but they didn't just change the cylinder heads.

I could not afford the maintenance on the Maserati let alone the cost of the car. But I love my 2019 Abarth 124 Spider and do most of the maintenance myself. In its phase 2 tune my spider is now above 200 horsepower and has way more torque. I bought the Spider with 4,600 miles on it and about 18 months old for $27,300 with a $38,000 MSRP.

An absolutely stunning car. I don’t understand the placement for the switch for the top; both for the movement and the electrochromic. It can’t be just a cost savings? Can it? After all, it is a very expensive car! My recollection is that Mercedes uses a similar touch screen in its SL Roadster for the top movement.

I’d rather a Miata (and have 2) bc one, definitely more reliable than the Fiat, how often does it break btw? And it’s gonna be more expensive for literally the same parts lol, then it’s not even a big enough bump in power. One of mine’s making 170 with a Ford Fusion Engine swap, and it’s still reliable and sounds amazinggg. And cheaper? Where? Last time I looked the 124 was about 10k MORE than a Miata

@@jakebrouillette8268 Only more expensive if you buy the abarth version. The regular one is far cheaper and if you look at the cheapest model and compare it to the cheapest mx-5 model of the same year it has the nicer mx-5 roof (ie more soundprooding) and slightly more power if in the US. I got mine 11k miles for 17k, pre-certified granted I'm in the industry. As for the reliability fiat only does the exterior, the engine is chrysler (not brilliant) but the car is constructed on the same production line as an mx-5. It also has 50/50 weight distribution and unlike how they talk about it here, can be driven like a maniac as it drives like an mx-5 with some turbo lag. Why does it drive like an mx-5? Because it is literally an mx-5 with a different engine and exterior design. The inside literally just takes the mazda badges off and replaces it with a fiat and or abarth logo. But as stated before they go cheaper and I honestly think it looks a ton nicer then the mx-5.

They were cheaper than ND2 clubs. As forthe power and reliability - You can get easily above 210HP with an upgraded turbo. And if not changing the downpipe you have no reliability issues.… only issue would be the O2 sensor 😂 . Basically if you are not going crazy - indestructible engine.

@@jakebrouillette8268 Again, people don't know about them. Including you. The standard model is the lusso (badged fiat), the abarth is the highest trim (MX-5's also have fancy more expensive trims. The basic 124 spider was priced the same as an mx-5 despite having the highest trim roof of an MX-5 at the time. The basic model also has more hp in the US when compared to its counterpart in the mx-5 (it has turbo lag, mazda wins here). As for reliability, yes it says Fiat but its made on the same production line as an MX-5 (Fiat only does the exterior) and in my opinion it looks a lot nicer then an mx-5. It has 50/50 weight distribution and increadibly light, because it's basically just an engine swapped MX-5 with a different exterior. I got mine 11k miles for 17k pre-certified, but I'm in the industry and I was hunting for one. But they werelike 2k cheaper then same year mx-5's when I was looking for a car.

I'm confused. Maybe they're saying it's a new engine.. but it's effectively the same engine from the Qf Alfas. It also was derived from the V8 Ferrari, with 2 cylinders lopped off. Don't believe the marketing hype.

I just saw on the news 3 days ago that an MC 20 Maserati completely split in half in an accident where the front of the car was at one place and the whole back of the car was that another and they were far apart from each other it showed the tree that split the car in half and there was a fatality I hope you guys saw it before you drove this car from the reviews that I've seen of the other journalists like yourself this car is real Twitchy I'll be interested in hearing what you have to say now onto your video oh by the way keep up the great work much appreciated

Saw an MC20 in a white pearl color at a cars and coffee, absolutely beautiful paint and the styling is very good But for that money….I want an exotic engine. Much rather have a Huracan, GT3, etc.

i thought your take on the 124 spider was interesting. l have owned mine for 7 years , there is no way l would say the suspension is terrible. Perhaps American delivered car have a different set up?

My friend bought an ND2 Miata last year and ever since then it's been like, no other sports car holds up in fun/pleasure/usability for the money. Sure a Boxster/Cayman is a nice upgrade, but is it ~3x better? Not even close. But it costs 3x more. The MC20 seems to suffer from that even more. Just skip that 1.4T Fiat and get the naturally aspirated Mazda.

The ND MX-5 which it's the sister car of is, so I'd say so 😯😀🤘 . (Indeed the MX-5 just got a new update so will be on sale for several years yet! 😀🤘 .) Edit - Apparently not, while as said the ND MX-5 is, the 124 ended production in 2020, shortly after the refreshed "ND2" MX-5 came out 😯😐 ...)

It is light and fun to drive, and that was mentioned here. We’ve put it against the ND Miata in a different comparison years ago and discussed them side by side. As stated in this piece, it’s a Miata Alt, but we prefer the Miata. (Engine, transmission and suspension tuning) Thanks for watching.

I’m going to go out and say those Chinese lion heart tires spoiled the 124 ride. Other reviews have praised the ride on OEM tires, I think the cheapo’s are at fault.

I have to admit that am slightly confused. I'm on the brink of buying a 124 Spider, therefore also biased, but i believe can put my bias aside. In my search for information about this car, i scoured the internet for anything i could find before buying the car. I have read many reviews and seen dozens of reviews on youtube. For the KZfaq reviews i focused on established car channels (like Richard Hammond driving the car on Top Gear) and channels of the known car magazines. I ignored individuals raving about their own 124. I got really excited about this car because i never encountered one single bad review, not in the slightest! Going from this review i have to conclude that the car is reasonably okay on some points,but gets a lot of stick in the meantime on many other points. I know that this video was made in good faith but can you (or someone) contextualise the criticisms a bit for me? I find it difficult to measure this review to the tons of positiveness about this car in general.

We've driven the 124 a few times, including against the GT86 and ND Miata (a different video comparison we did a few years ago). We were surprised at the near universal praise it got from many published reviews as no car is perfect. We know some established reviewers who refused to give it a public review because they didn't like it. From our driving, and the many owners we've spoken to, we offer the following: It is a Mazda MX5 with alternative styling. The best things about it are its MX5 bones. Some people prefer the styling of the 124 or the rarity compared to the Miata. Engine wise, the ND2 engine update is better than the 124 turbo engine. Paul and Todd were split on liking 124 turbo engine in our prior reviews. Reliability will probably be better with the Mazda powerplant, though there were transmission issues early in the ND lineup. In short, if you like the 124 as a MX5 alt, you should enjoy it. But we would just pick the MX5. Thanks for watching and asking!

Owned one in the past for a couple of years- It is a fun car, but I am not missing it.. Like with the Miata you need to invest in some amount of upgrades. Easy to drop in an upgraded turbo and make 210+HP. Makes great sound with the Monza exhaust. Nowadays I would prefer Miata due NA engine. Now the fun part- comparing that to the next car I bought just after fiat. BMW M240 convertible. Which I choose because of the size being not too big but usable with kids. Fiat feels cheap inside and outside. Obviously slow. But it was a way better driving experience, so much lighter and more fun to drive. I ended up trading m240 in just a few months because I hated to drive it..

When the Maserati Biturbo was released in Europe, I saw only two that year, both on the side of the road with the hood up. Fast forward three years, I saw another one, on the bed of a recovery company low loader. Since then I have still never seen one in its natural habitat, running down a road. That has made this brand to me something I will never consider new, previously loved or even a gift. New or old, I think best avoided.

If you spend about $5k on tighter suspension for the fiat, you’ll never have a more fun car to drive…. And cheapest to maintain.

I was thinking suspension, sways, brakes, wheels and tires…. But you can go cheaper.

@@mostyles328 If you lucky you got brembos. The car is light, you don't need big brakes. I think I spent around 5-6 K for the whole car with an upgraded suspension, wheels, brembos, upgraded turbo and tune. The two mistakes I made were sway bars and downpipe)) If I kept those stock I would probably still own the car)) It was anyway better than m240 convertible I got after))

Maserati looks good sounds great and definitely not a reliable manufacturer 😊. I buy German and they hold up well but this car is really nice 👍

@@elnyoutube123 ask anybody with a Maserati, how many times they go to the service department it’s historically the worst car in the world . For this kind of money buy Porsche way more reliable.

@@user-ul4wy2lx2mWell I asked myself, and mines been very reliable. I've asked other people who go to my service center and they've been reliable. The only people I ever see having issues are people who deliberately dont take care of them like running over curbs never doing oil changes and then complain because they think an expensive car is supposed to be indestructible. Also im pretty sure Porsche has more known engine issues across the 911 range than Maserati has had with any of their V6s or V8s over the past 20 years or so. If we're talking about 80s and 90s Biturbos, those were truly unreliable.

They did. Mazdaspeed Miata in 2004-2005. One of the joys of owning a Miata is modding it and thats what owners do. So many available aftermarket parts it boggles the mind…
