You've probably seen a dozen infomercials for the latest and greatest of kitchen appliances : the air fryer. But are these kitchen gadgets really the miracle machines that they claim to be? Well, yes and no. It's not as easy as just tossing your food into the fryer like you would an oven, but they're not impossible to use either. The complications and compromises may surprise you. It's not hard to burn dinner or even break your brand new air fryer if you leap in headfirst.
With that in mind, here are some mistakes everyone makes with air fryers.

I clean mine after every use, I have the round shallow cake tin with mine which is ideal to cook for one, fish steak fits in great and I can lift that out and just wash that non stick tin, then wash whole fryer couple of times a week. I have not used my traditional cooker over since last Christmas I love it! I find 14 minutes cooks most foods fine, 7 mins each side on 200C setting, and although there are automatic settings for certain foods, I never use them, the great thing is you can check and re start to see how food is going, hard to go wrong really! Cheers from UK 🇬🇧 👍🏻

Somehow I avoided all of these "mistakes" when I started using an air fryer nearly 10 years ago. Maybe that's because I read the instructions first. Preheating for 10 minutes is ridiculous. Three is all that is needed. I use the Pam olive oil pump sprayer to spritz most "fried" foods before cooking and it is wonderful.

Had been using a 1st gen air fryer from QVC for 9 years. Just bought a Ninja Foodi FD401 last year. It’s a world of difference. Pressure cooked split pea soup, took 20 minutes instead of 4 1/2 hours in a crockpot. All types of ribs fall off the bone, braised meat is tender, pulled pork shreds easily. Too many things to rave about, time saving is the most important.

I think they meant mimicking "deep fried" types of chicken like chicken fingers.. I did an egg wash, flower coating and "air fried" my "tenders" and they were super dry and the flour was still white. they were terrible. sprayed the next batch with pam and they came out crispy and ok. I usually just use my air fryer for things like re heating left overs and raw chicken wings.. they come out amazing without any batter or "oil".. many people look at the air fryer solely as a "deep fryer" substitute. this video is aimed at them.

Regardless if your model of air fryer has the ability to pause midway through the cycle or not, it's always good to check your food at least half way through if you need to shake/turn it. Even for models that have a bottom burner too! Even cooking in an oven people check on the food that is cooking or baking.

We use the double Ninja, and it's super fast compared with the normal electric oven. Cooking times should be taken with a grain of salt, and you have to check the food regulary. And use a thermometer like in this video. Pre-heating? Sometimes maybe, but most of the time we don't and still have great food.
@whatworkedforme

sure! the area inside an air fryer is probably less than 20% of a conventional oven so pre heating is just a waste of energy... My problem is getting plates hot for the food (used to use the oven along with the food i was cooking before) so I just stick some plates in the oven on Grill setting for 4 minutes before serving up. I'd like to use the heat from the air fryer but it is not as easy as I thought it would be

Overcrowding is a big one. And even some of the professional recipes shown are guilty of it. Note the wings. No way they would cook properly. Also, I never preheat and my food comes out perfect every time. You can't screw up chicken. Here's a tip. Take a chicken thigh, coat with seasoned flour and cook 5 minutes each side on high. Then, remove and smear with margarine. Cook another 5 minutes per side. Perfect fried chicken.

Chips were dry and not very nice at all, so I went back to a deep oil fryer for the chips and don`t worry about the oil, just make sure that the oil is up to temperature before the potato chips are put it (I mean chipped as in chipped potatoes, not crisps) I sold the air fryer and bought a multi cooker, so much better because you can even do the sauce at the same time.

@@LiterallyAllNamesAreTaken as i said, the chips were dry and not very nice at all, I did not buy the thing for health reasons, I bought it so that it would be cleaner than using a deep fat fryer and not have the trouble of changing and getting rid of the used oil. Nothing else I tried in the air-fryer was very good to eat either, if I would have been contented to eat more healthily without having a good taste from the food, I would have been happy but everything tasted bland in comparison and I like my meals to be tasty. I have a double oven as part of my main oven and that is a bit larger than an air-fryer and probably costs a similar about of money to use, for chips, I use a deep fat fryer again and they taste far better than those from an air-fryer, the makers say that you only need a spoon full of oil but that is a lie because all you get is baked dry chips, not proper chips. If you make sure that a deep fat fryer has reached a very hot temperature, the hot oil quickly forms a skin on the chips and they don`t get at all oily but they still have the real chip quality.

Best baked potatoe..... Large potato, clean and dry well. Coat potato with any oil (I use olive oil spray). Salt potato well. Use a knife and puncture all over. Set for 25 minutes then rotate potato for another 25 minutes. I know it's a long cook time but the hot air fryer turns the potato with crispy potato skins and soft fluffy inside. Try at least once.....if you like potato skins.

The tray that came with my Rotisserie type fryer was round edged and too shallow to collect chicken fat so I made one out of stainless steel which has greater depth and goes to all corners. a small chicken cooked well at 200 c for 20 minutes then 160 c for 95 minutes.

I know you asked this a year ago and have probably made your choice but, just in case: As mentioned the Ninja dual basket but I have the Ninja Flexidrawer 10.4 litre airfryer where I can use the whole as one huge basket or put in dividers and use one or both sides. Definitely you would get a large family meal in there. It bakes, roasts, reheats, dehydrates, proves dough and there is even a maxi crisp option and none of those options need preheating. You can ook one thing on one side and something else on the other side and set it to finish cooking both sides at the same time. A time and money saver in my opinion. No, I'm not afilliated to Ninja in any way, I just love the machine!

You really have to learn how to cook with an air fryer and experiment with different functions. For example, you may find the preset air fry function browns your food before it’s cooked inside and may need to adjust the temperature, or use a different function altogether. I’ve used the preset bake/roast feature at times and got better results. The manual only gives a rough guide. In reality it’s going to take time to figure out times and temperatures for any food to be done to your taste. Enjoy!

As last resort, try Baking Soda & hot water soak for half hour. Then scrub with stiff brush. I clean up after every use and have never needed to use the Baking Soda method ; just regular dish washing liquid and stiff brushing works practically all the time. Been doing so for past 10 years.
