Why do we have a distributor, wholesaler, and retailer as separate things? Wouldn't it make more sense if that was one firm able to do all three?

This is a hands-on demonstration of how the supply chain works across multiple operations and how inventory travels from A to B and so on. It could be the same company in theory, but the point is to show the four operations and how miscommunications can derail the whole process. As an employee, you'd likely be working from the point of view of one of these operations, and only being able to use information from your upstream and downstream to make decisions. It's important for us to have practice experiencing the supply chain this way.
