All around the world there are buildings whose walls really look like ruins. There's where your cement paint and one hand plastering comes in. If most of the people knew about those simple facts and simple jobs, thousands of houses and buildings wouldn't look so terrible. Besides there is the low budget situation. In this case engineering has a solution and you apply it well. However if people had lots of money they would build a new house or a new building. I congratulate you for what you call "common sense" which is not that common for most people. Happy new year and may God grant you more projects and repairing, the world needs it and the world needs you!

You're the best Mike. Keeping it real as always. For years I read books that showed the 'correct' way to do things and listened to the so called experts. Always cost me a hell of a lot more and took 10 times as long to get anything done. Ended up with more tools than I knew what to do with. But now I tend to go with the simplest and most cost effective way I can. Like you say Mike "Don't make a big deal out of it.

Denmark chiming in here. Love to see you working like the old timers. My father was a mason. Startet out laying out pigpens, so he knew how to lay bricks in round patterns. And got to be in on some nice and interesting jobs over the years. Lost him too early 12 years ago. Seeing you work is very similar to seeing and working with him. I have worked with him so much, that even though I’m not a mason myself I do most patch ups and small projects myself. But I know when to get a professional to do the work. Wetting down the walls... first thing my father always said. Last thing too. As he said: “You won’t get anything to stick if it isn’t wet 😊

So I believe it is destiny that one day I will jump into it eventually. In that respect, I enjoy watching KZfaq and learn about building stuff. AHA! It does come down to the decision to take the job or not. Mike you said a mouthful there. Takes a lot to evaluate what the owner or agent wants, how much they are willing to pay and if that will allow the craftsman a completed work that is both correct for the situation, legal, and not a problem or insurance hazard. I bet it took you a few years to pick up that skill. Have a happy New Years by the way.

@@MikeHaduck Oh, we also have all these fancy products nowadays and according to the manufacturers if you don't use them your wall will fall. Maybe they should tell that to the guys who built the Pantheon in Rome. I use modern products too but it's good too know old school techniques when you're short on money or in a remote area without tons of supplies. Back in 79 my grandpa even made his own lime from burning limestone and slaking it and his house is still standing.

Mike, I have a similar situation on a 120 year old parapet brick wall with lime mortar. I have sections where it's falling out completely along with the plaster. My question is should I stick to the soft style mortar type n for old brick repair & plaster or should I use a heavier cement mix in my mortar? Some contractors are telling me if I use more portland in my mix I will further damage the wall because it won't be able to breathe correctly with heavy cement base mortar mix. Your thoughts would b greatly appreciated. I see u using type s mix a lot. I do live in Florida so it doesn't get cold very much, but does rain a lot. Thanks again

Hi Mike! I’m fixing my block foundation. The wall has sheared about 5/8” on row 2&3 of a 5 block high wall. I’m building a new block wall on the inside to support the old one as it’s just a crawl space and pouring concrete between both the new and old wall. On the outside I’ve fixed the water problem (gutters/drainage/grading) but I have a question…the exterior block was covered in a black substance, not sure if it’s tar or rubber. I have scrubbed it with Muriatic acid and about 50% of it is gone. Can I put mortar in the joint cracks and a parging coat over top of the remaining tar covered blocks? Will it stick? Or do I have to grind it all off? Once that is done, I’ll be applying a new waterproof coat and then a drainage membrane so little water will touch the blocks in the future. Thx, as always, for the amazing vids!

Mike have you tried spec mix? Stuff is pretty tuff..Not sure they make type n but I know they make type S. Takes three bags of that to make what one bag of brixment and sand will make. The stuff is so strong. Cost more money but you do not need sand etc just spec mix.

Hi Mike i just have a question for u. When u add the fiberglass, is it better to mix it in dry before u add the water & mix it up so the fiberglass spreads evenly? Also would adding the liquid bonding glue or i call it("milk") instead of fiberglass, do the same use as adding fiberglass? Thanx & keep up the good videos! I enjoy them very much!👍. Happy new year!
@MikeHaduck
@MikeHaduck 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, I find the fiberglass spreads quite quickly, sometimes I get a little lump here and there, but it does the job, I think the bonding Helps also but it slows down the drying for a fast job, thanks, mike

With that old brick i'd use .5 type n masons mix, .5 hydrated lime, 3 sand directly against the brick. Portland and type s is too hard for old brick.

I just submitted my bid for a job in my town. It's in an alley and one section is 6' wide x 20' high on one side and 4'wide x 20' on the other side of an elevator shaft. The wall is granite and brick they dont want anything fancy just covered up. I was curious if you would recommend the mix you use here and if you think dimple mesh would be needed. Since the sections are so high. I was planning on using heavy duty waterproofing mix.

Hi Nick, it's a hard call, I usually use some fiberglass added , do my first coat wait a few days and do a second, but everything depends, I would do a little sample on the wall and see how it sticks. I like 2 sand to 1 cement ( half smotar half potland) other masons would disagree, thanks mike

Hello Mike. Am I correct that your old school bonding agent (portland mix with water) can only be used on cementitious products and not surfaces that have been painted with exterior house paint? How would you bond the cement if walls are painted with exterior paint? Thank You. I like your guitar playing .

Hi Mike, love the videos.. What would you say is the thickest, approximately, you could lay 1 coat of that s mortar onto brick? Labels say about 1/2 inch. Id like to get 2 inches... Would the fiberglass enable a thicker layer? Many thanks!

@MikeHaduck
@MikeHaduck 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Emmarie, the problem is traditional cement shrinks, that is why guy like Kirk wait up to 30 days to put on the final coat, otherwise it is going to show a lot of cracks, if it is very small job I will just use rapid set or fast settling repair mortar and two ahours later you can go over it and be done, it all depends on the job, I hope it helps, mike

@@MikeHaduck Thanks Mike, Im in NY so I trust your climate opinion here... I didn't get any shrink cracks, I was more concerned that the second layer would not adhere properly, as I only waited a 2 hours to recoat. I used regular s mortar mix and added a bit of portland, and each layer seemed to hold well together. each coat was 1/4 " totaling 1/2". Im goind to drylock after 30 days, i bet that would cover any cracks too, thanks again Mike

I've had masonry business for 15 years, only block, brick and stone. I have a customer that wants his parapet wall tuckpointed. The mortar is still very hard so it would take forever to grind out all the joints. I'm thinking it would be easier\cheaper to plaster over the wall instead. Not sure how much to charge, what's the going rate per sq ft for 2 coats?
