Have you noticed at 6:07, when the music changes, Christine is the only one who stands still while the others are moving? A super cool detail I just noticed: at about 3:43 you can see Madame Giry watching Christine and Raoul as they discuss their engagement. She gets concerned and distracted, and even tries to approach Raoul, though apparently isn't able to get him to pay proper attention. It's a nice little detail to show she's realized what's going on, and also realizes what the Phantom will do if he finds out.
@brxzbze
@brxzbze 2 жыл бұрын
That is a cool detail! I love these little character interactions that often get lost in the overarching plot -- this show has a lot of them from what I can tell. One of my favourites is not technically in the show but is in the original script: in the Don Juan rehearsal in Act II when everybody is complaining about Piangi singing the music wrong, Giry tells Christine that she sings the part well and she will do the composer's music justice, and Christine thanks her. Christine also briefly tries to help Piangi with the music. It implies Christine's musical ability but also shows that both Giry and Christine respect and understand the Phantom's music and that it's not actually 'gibberish' as Piangi may have said. I don't think this moment is really obvious in most productions or if it even is still there, though.

I've always adored the entire cast's costumes here-their masquerade ensembles are breathtaking with all the sparkles, trims, and beautiful fabrics. Christine's dress is especially gorgeous, the 'Star Princess' gown looks like twilight when stars first begin to appear-that time between Day and Night, Light and Dark. Quite fitting considering her story.

When I read Masque of the Red Death by Poe I realized how eerie and perfect it was for the phantom to dress up as the 'Red Death' (basically the bringer of the illness/Death to Prince Prospero's castle party) and show up. It's quite literally a warning. I may have just put two and two together after knowing the musical and Poe's story for years lol.

Although it is sort of heavy on exposition, lyrically most of the lines have double meanings (mostly jibing at the Phantom) and the extended dance cut when the music becomes more tonally uncertain for a moment shows Christine's anxiety.

Here, they are so like those couples who are trying to hide their couple problems during a night out haha. Raoul’s face is so relatable! Beautiful and unique costumes, engaging and meaningful choreography. I've never stopped loving musical theatre, but watching this reevoked that love. So many bodies on stage, but it never felt cluttered or distracting. Such amazing talents in this art form, while most people only notice the actors. This is easily my favorite musical, and this number gave me chills. I haven't gotten chills from a production in some time. What a complete breath of fresh air; I wish I had seen this in person.

Masquerade, paper faces on parade Masquerade, hide your face so the world will never find you Masquerade, every face a different shade Masquerade, look around, there's another mask behind you Flash of mauve, splash of puce Fool and king, ghoul and goose Green and black, queen and priest Trace of rouge, face of beast, faces Take your turn, take a ride On the merry-go-round in an inhuman race Thigh of blue, true is false Who is who Curl of lip, swirl of gown Ace of hearts, face of clown, faces Drink it in, drink it up 'til you've drowned In the light, in the sound But who can name the face? Masquerade, grinning yellows, spinning reds Masquerade, take your fill, let the spectacle astound you Masquerade, burning glances, turning heads Masquerade, stop and stare at the sea of smiles around you Masquerade, seething shadows breathing lies Masquerade, you can fool any friend who ever knew you Masquerade, leering satyrs, peering eyes Masquerade, run and hide, but a face will still pursue you What a night, what a crowd Makes you glad Makes you proud All the crème, de la crème Watching us, watching them And all our fears are in the past Three months of relief Of delight, of elysian peace And we can breathe at last No more notes, no more ghost Here's a health, here's a toast To a prosperous year, to the new chandelier And may our splendor never fade (what a joy) (what a change) What a blessed release And what a masquerade Think of it, a secret engagement Look, your future bride, just think of it But why is it secret? What have we to hide? Please, let's not fight (Christine, you're free) Wait 'til the time is right (when will that be?) It's an engagement, not a crime Christine, what are you afraid of? Let's not argue (let's not argue) Please pretend (I can only hope) You will understand in time (I'll understand in time) Masquerade, paper faces on parade Masquerade, hide your face so the world will never find you Masquerade, every face a different shade Masquerade, look around, there's another mask behind you Masquerade, burning glances, turning heads Masquerade, stop and stare at the sea of smiles around you Masquerade, grinning yellows, spinning reds Masquerade, take your fill, let the spectacle astound you Why so silent, good Messieurs? Did you think that I had left you for good? Have you missed me, good Messieurs? I have written you an opera Here, I bring the finished score Don Juan triumphant I advise you to comply My instructions should be clear Remember, there are worse things than a shattered chandelier Your chains are still mine, you will sing for me

Every time I watch this, the Phantom's appearance just gives me goosebumps. There is just so much menace in his voice, and his body language (and how he utilizes his mask) is simply spectacular. In my mind, there is no doubt that Mr. Karimloo is a Master of this role.

I think the only way I can come close to explaining my happy place is by saying to combine the masquerade part of this video, the moments of Paprika with the parade of dreams, and any moment of Madoka Magica with the witches. That is my happy place, the aesthetic I suppose you could say, that I most long for. Which is to say, I absolutely adore this:')
