I have been struggling with a intermittent vibration at speed in a 2003 Camry V6 primarily going up hills. Symptoms were the car body and steering wheel vibrated. It felt like a out of balance tire (I just had the tires rotated) so I took it back into the tire shop and had the tires checked. I chased my tail trying to correlate the driving issues. Yesterday, the weather changed from sunny and warm (thin air) to cool overcast with light rain (thick air) and the vibration subsided! It had something to do with air density. I came across this video and you articulated how/why the MAF functions within the system. I was convinced this was the problem. I removed the sensor and cleaned , now Car runs perfect. You very seldom get to see subject matter experts on KZfaq. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Have spent a lot of money on other senors and repair shop visits for my problem in a 2000 Miata. And after seeing this I purchased a mass airflow sensor and WOW, problem solved. Doesn't say a whole lot about the competence of mechanics in my area. This guy covered a lot in this video, but was all related to the sensor. Thank you for the video. It was well done. If ever in Midland Texas let me buy you a steak dinner and beer or two........................... Or three.. lol

You just save me hundreds of dollars in repairs on my Jaguar with your explanation of how the MAF sensor works. I thought I had a vacuum leak that required a lot of labor to repair. I had installed a K&N filter on my S-Type and it started leaning out under heavy air flow. As long as the engine was cold and the choke was operating, no problem. But once the engine was warm, it would not rev over 3,000 rpm without the automatic ignition cutout coming on. The car drives fine as long as I kept it under 3,000rpm, which is about 73mph. Is that any way to drive a Jaguar? Hell, no!. So I replaced the K&N oiled element with a dry element ($16) and installed a new MAF sensor ($14.74) and the check engine light is out and everything is fine.

Outstanding! Wish I (and the two mechanics who missed it) had seen this when my van was overheating. I thought it was running too lean and hot. They checked and replaced everything else - thermostat, pump, radiator, even the radiator cap without success. I suspect I probably over-oiled my air filter and or the MAF was just dirty.

Thanks. Have rough idle on cold start and I have to believe it is a vacuum leak by how you described the symptoms. Makes sense now.

I been trying to get my truck to pass smog since 2017 and I been trying to figure out this lean code I been having for years ! A/F to lean bank one sensor 1 so I have changed both 02 sensors, didnt work , installed new cat converters still don’t work , changed MAF sensor still nothing ! But I do have a k&N intake and the MAF sensor is mounted underneath instead of facing up “. You just gave me so such valuable information That I been trying to find for years “ so last week I did clean another filter and sprayed some of that oil on and yesterday it’s giving me all kinds of idol problems “ codes popping up like crazy “ cylinders misfired ‘ just making my truck sound like crap “ so when you said it that the MAF can get coated because of the oil 💡. I hope it’s because of that I’m about to find out right now thank you so much

I have a 16 wrx with a Cobb intake and I’m having negative AF learning 1 badly at like -20 to -30 and this only happens at idle and low throttle; it’s only a problem that has recently happened but the intake has been in for over a year. Where should I start to look first? Cleaning the maf or checking for a leak? And does this sound like a vacuum leak or a boost leak? I might have missed it in the video but I didn’t quite find what my problem is in the video

I get a P0101 code on a GM Truck w/6.0L. I have a cold air intake with a second intake hose ducted into the filter box, from an opening in my lower grill. Is it possible that the cold air being scooped in the second hose, is cooling these MAF wires too much? When I mash the gas pedal, the check engine light always comes on. I have a AEROFORCE Scan Gauge plugged into the OBD jack, so right away, I can clear to code and the check engine light goes off. My cold air intake uses a dry filter and not an oiled one. Is this affecting my fuel consumption by simply clearing the codes each time after I mash the gas? If I drive normally, it never comes on... but if I need to go fast, the check engine light almost always comes on. Please help me. Thanks. Dean

So yesterday my 1998 740il popped a p0301 and a p0300 right before my wife and I were about to go out of town and it was shaking bad and barely would accelerate. We ended up taking our van instead. I went and bought a coil for cylinder number #1, installed it and the car did the same thing. I took out all the coils from that bank and the spark plugs as well. They all looked good. I re-installed the plugs and coils leaving the new one out, disconnected the battery and touched the + and - togther, reconnected the battery and the car ran like normal with the slight miss it's had for the past 2 months. I pulled the MAF connector off and the car cleared up perfectly. I put it back on and the miss and slight shake came back. I was about to unplug it again and the car shut off when I touched the wires to the plug connector. Apparently the wires are frayed or something inside or at the plug. They're connected good enough that the car won't throw a CEL for it when it's connected but the mpg's are bad with it connected. I drove a round with it unplugged for about 4 miles and my mpg's are at factory spec, sometimes better like up to 20 mph in the city. When I shut my car off the CEL was back on with the codes P0100 P0130 and P0136. I understand the P0100 but any suggestions would be great. Thanks

I have a 2010 Hyundai Elantra with a rough idle. I have a Launch 123 i scan tool. The car idles really smooth with lots of power when it was when new , if I detach the MAF sensor. What should I be looking at? Gas mileage is poor and not as good power wise as when it was new. Drives ok. Could I have a hot wire issue. I have the shop manual form Hyundai . The scan tool will read live data, and I can save the data or freeze frame the data and print it. I notice the timing is erratic, and the idle speed drops down and then comes up! into the range it should be. Engine timing is nit smooth. I had the timing belt and water pump changed because of the age. It had no influence on the rough idle. What do you suggest ? Thanks EJR
