He is the author of some twenty books on firearms, self-defense, and related topics, including “In the Gravest Extreme” and “Deadly Force,” widely considered to be authoritative texts on the topic of the use of lethal force.
The winner of the Outstanding American Handgunner of the Year Award in 1998, Mas has won several state and regional handgun shooting championships. Ayoob was the first person to earn the title of Five Gun Master in the International Defensive Pistol Association. He is the current President of the Second Amendment Foundation. I used a shotgun the very first time I had to defend me and my mother from 4 ex-cons who tried to do a home invasion. In retrospect, I’d use an AR instead of a shotgun for multiple threats. Faster follow up shots and more ammo capacity. I would never comply with any magazine limit. In places like L.A. County criminals are literally favored and considered victims of society. I saw a video several years ago where popular calibers and guns were tested inside an empty home. The AR’s .223 penetrated the least, even less than a 9mm.

I have a VR-80 with magazines that hold 5, 9 or 19 rounds. I keep it loaded in my safe with the 5 round magazine because the 9 and especially the 19 round magazine are pretty long. @bassblaster162

Exactly, we'll said. Due to recent incidents, some of us gun folk have been getting wrapped around the axle about no-knock warrants, and how they should be eliminated. But, I'm more concerned with anyone...ANYONE, who doesn't live in my house, being able to gain forced entry...before I can react appropriately. That is totally unacceptable. In the most recent no-knock case I've seen, the LEOs had somehow obtained a key, and entered after simply unlocking the front door. No second lock, no deadbolt, not even a slider-chain. Within seconds, the guy who had been allegedly sleeping on the couch was shot dead (yes, he had a gun, but that's beside the point). In the Jayme Closs kidnapping case, the killer got into the family's home very easily, to say the least. In both cases, the home security was sorely lacking. To your point, my point is this...let's be honest, from a homeowner's perspective...is there really a difference between a chaotic home invasion, and a no-knock warrant being served at the wrong address? Wow, that went waaaay longer than I thought it would...a thousand apologies.

I can tell you now, if you want an AR for home defense, get something like the S&W M&P-15. I have one and let me tell you, it’s a flarking blast to shoot and it’s my fun time “Pom Pom” gun. And at $650-$700, if god forbid you have to use it to defend your property, it’s a lot easier to swallow when you have to loose it to the police evidence locker!…,Not to mention easier to replace too. Now, at around the same time as you made that comment, I done gone and got a Daniel Defense MK12….It’s of much higher quality, more range, far easier to shoot and will last an entire lifetime AR…But when it comes to home defense…I’m grabbing my M&P cause…Let’s put it this way, my “Sexy Expensive Bit*h” set me back 2.2K already and I’m not gonna loose that expensive fine piece of machinery to the police. Besides, most home defense happen in less than 30 yards, where the “12’s” 400 yard effective range is basically redundant! Yeah, go for the M&P-15. At $650, it’s a lot easier to convince good ol’ SWMBO too!….Rathet than the 2.2K MK12!

@@blakeumthun8128 Well this is an old comment and you probably already got your setup but I would avoid Model 1 Sales. They were good when no one else was around but their builds are not the best quality (I'm actually surprised they are still in business). PSA, BCA, or Combat Armory are pretty much the go to options. The latter two are the cheapest because they are manufacturers who make the parts other companies use. If you do already have an AR, use a ballistic tip 55grn bullet, such as V-MAX. Reason for that is that they have thinner jackets and faster expansion so they will break apart more readily if it its your dry wall or fence which reduces the issue of collateral. Even if you hit your target, even handgun calibers will often sail straight through the individual and not be stopped unless it hits bone, so "over penetration" while not a huge concern (as shooting at a slight angle up simply by crouching or kneeling mostly eliminates the risk) can be easily be almost completely negated with 5.56 and proper ammo. There is a website called "how I did it" which has a writeup which revealed this capability a decade ago.

Having thwarted an attempted home invasion of 8-10 thugs, I recommend everyone think about that many potentially being through your door and on you in your home in 5-20 seconds. I'd installed a steel door with 3.5" stainless screws and oversized lock strike plates. Without that, they'd have been in. I was on the other side with a .357 Mag... but only 5 rounds, never expecting that many at once. It's police documented with other witnesses, they were randomly hitting dark homes. Note: The telescopic stock is not allowed in NJ also. My son in law purchased one because he liked mine when he was visiting me in Pennsylvania. When he made his purchase in NJ (his home state) the gun shop had him shoulder the rifle and then placed a nonremovable pin to disallow adjustment. They told him that if the police check your rifle and the pin is removed, he would be in "big" legal trouble.

The only retort that I have is that firing a 223/5.56 round inside without hearing protection is going to be extremely painful and probably blow your eardrums. Adding a suppressor to a 223/5.56 won't help too much, so considering a subsonic round like the 300 blackout paired with a suppressor is IMO an option that is worth considering.

Great presentation as always from Mr. Ayoob. I've always gotten annoyed whenever anyone raises the "Do you need that many rounds..."issue when it comes to self-defense. I don't know about anyone else, but if I'm in a life/death scenario I want every available force multiplier available to ensure my survival and end the threat. If it's more rounds, more weapons, more defensive positions, etc....you name it, I want them all and my adversary to have none. Just my $0.02...

SPOT ON!!! This is why I have my AR15 accessible for everyone in the house that is authorized to use it. Now to get my wife out to the range and get familiar with my zero. I actually have .223 soft lead tip rounds, and in a 40 round magazine, I am definitely set up for multiple home invaders. I like to throw out with the use of a doorbell camera and replacing the two 1/2 in screws in my deadbolt flash with 3 in screws act as a deterrent and with layers of deterrents like that leaves less doubt that the people invading really want to get into my home to do harm.

Great video! The only thing I disagree with, and it’s not a big deal, is the wml on the rifle using it to scan the house. If you have a decent light, you can keep the rifle at a low ready with the light at the ground and still have more than enough light to see straight ahead inside a home without worrying about flagging the wrong person. I personally use the olight Odin with the pressure pad. It has 2000 linens at I think 19k candela but also a good peripheral light outside the hotspot.

Do you think there's a huge difference in 9mm vs 5.56mm sound indoors? Because the difference isn't that big, just google a decibel chart. I've shot 5.56mm indoors before and although it's unpleasant, I could definitely still hear afterwards. Guess your experience is different.
