Stream / Buy the track here: MassAppeal.lnk... and listen to the instrumental here: • "Paper (Instrumental)"...
This latest installment of Rhythm Roulette is a special one. Not only did we get to hook up with Mississippi's own David Banner for a blindfolded spin through Atlanta's Wax N Facts and follow-up session out at Tree Sound Studios, this episode also documents the making of the first Rhythm Roulette record to ever become an official release. You read that right. After Banner pulled a few GEMS out of the bins-Chicago's VII, Gladys Knight & the Pips' About Love and the Meters' Cabbage Alley-and broke out the sage, we should have known right then and there that Banner was going to cook up some marvelous shit.
Building on the back of Chicago's "Call on Me," Banner and crew- former Rhythm Roulette participant Gensu Dean, Burroughs and Tricky LT 45-flipped the soft rock cut's hook and horn stabs to deliver a smooth new payday anthem full of Southern soul. The resulting track, "Paper," is out now on Mass Appeal Records and available on iTunes, Apple Music and Soundcloud.
"That is what hip hop is supposed to be about," Banner said about the Rhythm Roulette series and the session. "We couldn't afford a bass player. We couldn't afford a guitar player. We couldn't get studio time like that. That's what sampling was about. Opening up opportunities to people who don't have them."
Shout out to David Banner for not only braving the blindfold and accepting the challenge, but for stepping up and delivering in a major way. Watch the session above to hear the finished track and see how "Paper" was made.

I respect Banner for actually keeping around an engineer and really asking for his input. A lot of producers these days are scared/hesitant to put their beats into someone else's hands but trusting an engineer will go a long way since a good engineer will show you how to truly maximize the mix and bring out all the elements to get a cohesive record. See kids, even OG's like Banner keep an engi around, they're valuable.

why does it need to be more difficult to be a valid statement? real producers can guide everyone in a room to a common vision weather hes making the beat or not. for example, quincy jones is considered one of the greatest producers of all time and he didnt make any of the "beats."

ShynAwkward dude that's CRAZY! I just posted the same thing BEFORE I read your comment. (You can tell by the time stamp on my comment too). That just shows it's the truth 100%. 9th Wonder murdered this challenge, but so did Banner. Top-2 without question. Because *some* of the (ahem) 'producers' they've had on here have been absolute trash. Just garbage. Some are so bad it's embarrassing to watch/listen to. Funny thing though? Notice the ones who use actual samplers vs Ableton or Fruity Loops etc are the ones who make those killer gutter hip hop beats. Don't get me wrong I produce Drum & Bass in Reason & Ableton, but I'm not on this level. Not by any stretch of the imagination. Not even close. Cheers, -H.B. Edit: Mura Masa was pretty sick too IMHO. Honorable mention for sure.

alioune traoré this ain't no damn trap. Just a southern beat. This how the South used to sound before the music started to be as trash as it is now.

This is not trap music. This is southern hip hop production in the vein on what David Banner pioneered himself along with 3 -6 and Mannie Fresh

David Banner is the truth. I've been studying his drums and overall production for years. He's one of the most slept on producers in the business. Definitely one of my all time favorites in hip hop.

myartwork907 that's not true - the music itself is the no.1 thing. The mix is just the cherry on top. Look at how many hits from back a day had just okay mixes but the music itself made it a hit

SEE THIS IS HOW SAMPLING SUPPOSED TO BE USED, as just a small part to add into an overall beat , notice how they added there own ticks, bass , and drums, to resemble the original, but still be different. its a work of art, not just chops thrown together, peace

David Banner is no fuckin' joke when it comes to beats. Some years ago in Philly, my homies and I smoked a blunts with him and talked about beats for 2 hours straight. He's a cool ass bol, and funny as fuck. Climbing walls and shit lol. That was a concert that had him, Kanye West, and Ludacris. Just right before Kanye's album dropped and he blew up. Was anyone there? 😁😡
