South Coast Rail: MBTA Geometry train to Fall River & New Bedford, MA - 4/26/2024

On April 26, 2024 the MBTA operated a geometry train extra from Boston, MA to Fall River and New Bedford to test track geometry on the new South Coast Rail lines. In this video we follow the train from Middleboro, down the Fall River then, then to New Bedford before heading back to Middleboro, MA. There still is work to be done on the line before service starts but hopefully we'll see some more test trains running soon. Once service is restored to the South Coast cities it'll be the first passenger rail service here since 1958! Stay tuned for more videos like this!

I saw this train literally yesterday at Forge Park in Franklin MA at around noon, but it was on the track just beyond the station on the other side of the pedestrian bridge

It’s gonna be a thrill having these trains serve Fall River and New Bedford. I grew up in this region of Massachusetts. First Dartmouth. Then Fall River. I had a better time living in Fall River. I remember how they kept proposing passenger trains traveling from Fall River to Boston so many times and kept getting cancelled. I’m so excited it’s finally happening. And the MBTA commuter trains are perfect. This is only Phase I where it joined the Middleborough line to Boston. In Phase II it will also join the Providence/Stoughton line on Amtraks NEC.

What will happen to the new Middleborough Station once (if) Phase 2 of South Coast Rail is realized? Will it be abandoned, and service rerouted back to Middleborough/Lakeville?

It’s sad to see so much single tracking. Also, if they were restoring the rail from the bed up. Why use wooden ties and not cement? And were the rails welded together with a Thermite process?

They tried using cement a while back. Just as they were finishing swapping out the wooden ties, the cement started to show signs of crumbing from the vibrations of the trains. So they ended up having to pull the cement, and put the wooden ties back.

Out of curiosity, where was the MBTA geometry train? Also, that right of way looks to be in remarkable condition. I would think that The T would be moving along faster than they were traveling.

That is the Amtrak Corridor Clipper that does the track geometry testing with specialized equipment inside it.

Anyone notice how convenient that the E Taunton station was missing. It's because they're lying and trying to deceive the public about how far along the project is and how far behind the Taunton station. Probably because you barely see anyone there, now and throughout the last 8 months working. I know this because the station is practically behind the houses on my street
