GSM Billy Mott fought in the Falklands war with the Welsh Guards and had to endure heavy loses. He is an outstanding soldier, served this country and Wales well. He has 2 other brothers and they served within the British Army as well, Welsh Guards of course x

American marches Semper Fidelis, Anchors Awiegh, and The Marine Corps Hymm were requested by the officer in charge of the Queens Birthday parade. It was a tribute to the close cooperation withe American troops

+nursetomrn Not the officer in charge, it came from the General Officer Commanding, London Military District which is also the Major-General commanding the Household Division. Came from higher up.

in tradition, American HS bands march on football fields, where the yardlines provide re-enforcement for straight lines. As the students progress, they are able to march in straight lines without aids (such as in parades). I have the greatest admiration for the British bands who do not even start on lined fields - even with the youngest students (ages 12-18). Unfortunately, by the years 1980 to 1990, most of the military band tradition in American HS Bands has moved to exact imitation of the American Drum & Bugle Corp, but of course, with the addition of full woodwinds. This 'new' style has indeed given percussion more to do, and some directors have kept much of the military maneuvers and fundamentals as part of their regimen. There are some American HS bands in south east and East Texas that refuse to stray from strict, 30-inch stride military. For some beautiful examples, you can search for Nederland HS TX UIL (any year) or Woodville HS TX UIL 1979 to 1984, Lufkin HS, Longview HS, Nacagdoches HS, and Camden HS (ARK) 1974-76. to watch and listen to how some high schools are still performing beautifully (ages 14-17)... You would be pleased to see the influence the british Bands have had on American HS Bands from 1930s-present. This is wonderful - especially the playing!!

it is a technique called the spin wheel. It is a maneuver to turn the whole band around. There is no written record of this maneuver it is passed down from musician to musician.
@m2piper11 жыл бұрын
It's called the spin wheel which enables the massed band to change direction 90 degrees to accommodate the dictates of the parade space and arrangements - there's a lot going on around them at the trooping of the Colour with the Guards companies
@seltaeb96913 жыл бұрын
I know years have passed by but Trooping the Colour has become poor to how it was before the 21st C came. The bands are great but troop drill very squiggly. Check it out here on KZfaq from 1960s.

Good grief. Some of the most important standard music of Trooping the Colour is of non-British origins. Escort to the Colour by E Waldteufel (French); Les Huguenots by G Meyerbeer (French); Prussia's Glory by JG Pifke (Prussian); Figaro by WA Mozart (Austrian) ; Scipio by GF Handel (ok he was employed in England at the time). Not to mention the standard marches from Italian and French operas.

True indeed, but this is a product of self-confidence; we’ve a statue of Charles de Gaulle just down the road, for heaven’s sake!

meadowlands 1937.you are right about the origins of the marches but then Britain did beat most of the countries you mentioned at some time or other.

First march is called "The Hugenots".

Since this discussion is still active we might as well provide the answer as to why American? The Quick Troop is called The United States Marine Corps by Sousa/Zimmermann/Offenbach and was played at the request of the Major General in recognition of 11 years of co-operation between British and U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
@ninjaperry999611 жыл бұрын
that is the pinwheel, it is something the guards have done for every single trooping of the colour for at least the last 60 years

Ah, there's the reasoning behind all this Semper Fidelis, Anchors Aweigh and Marines Hymn stuff!
@RandomNickyDee212 жыл бұрын
It sounds like the US melody will follow Les Huguenots, so only the band will march to it. I expect the rationale for it is musical rather than historical or political, though expect the BBC will make some comment about solidarity/alliance with the US. It's quite normal for foreign marches to end up in the Trooping. Möllendorf march and prussian glory are just a few examples. Don't forget aswell that a lot fo US marches are British in origin -e.g. the 7th cavlary regiment with Garryowen.

As a Canadian cadet musician i would just like to say two things. 1. This is amazing, much better than what we can accomplish as mass bands. 2. WHAT ARE THEY DOING AT 8:18?!
@sniperkid3897 жыл бұрын
The spin wheel. It allows the band to change direction without changing formation in a small or tight space.

This a myth. The brigade of Guards have been playing Les Huguenots at Trooping the Colour since about 1880!
@wirajack12 жыл бұрын
May I apologize first but I do wonder why do they keep playing Les Huguenots every year, any particular reason? I do understand about the other tunes being associated with the regiment and all....

The last number is the US Marine song:From the Halls of Montezuma, To the shores of Tripoli; We fight our country's battles In the air, on land, and sea; First to fight for right and freedom And to keep our honor clean: We are proud to claim the title Of United States Marine. Again I'm sorry!!!!!! but its strange to my ears hearing the Guards playing this. With all respect to the US marines. of course.

So at around 5 min they transition to U.S. marches (Washington Post, Anchors Away, Marine Corps Hymn) and then back to British tunes. Why the American interlude?

could be to show them what fighting men do when not in combat zones

GSM Billy Mott would FIX the Coldstreamers to serve the Queen & King BUT the Coldstreamers will ALWAYS BE 2ND behind the Welsh Guards but I would think, Billy Mott wouldn't trust not any Coldstreamers, RIGHTLY SO ... GSM Billy Mott FIXes this cattles in Alabama to march for him .... x
@louislungbubble12 жыл бұрын
i was hoping the quick troop would be the red feathers" by mckenzie rogan as i know this has been rehearsed...but it seems impossible to play! a good march knows no borders..but in some occasions ,they can be undoubtedly inappropriate , they MUST have a good reason for selecting these tunes...perhaps the 200th anniversary of the war of 1812 hahaha.....marty

@drummajor2000 I apologize Willie. Didn't mean to be so forceful. On the other hand perhaps a Guards Director of Music lost a bet with a colleague in the US Marine Corps.

No no. You were absolutely right. I'm the one who has to apologize. I was just disappointed about the march in quick time. These are all American Marine Marches and I don't like the Cadence in American Marches. There is a big differnce in marching to. You could say I suffer from a culturshock whe I saw the video. by the way: thanks Coldstream Guards for this video
