The name Massey Ferguson was coined in 1958 a shortening of the name Massey-Harris-Ferguson. This company had been formed in 1953 after the merger of the famous North American company Massey Harris with Harry Ferguson Limited of England.
Massey-Harris, had been based in Canada, and Harry Ferguson Ltd., in London, England,
At the end of 1957, the name Harris was dropped from Massey-Harris-Ferguson, and the legendary brand of agricultural machinery, Massey Ferguson was born in early 1958. Originally, the name was hyphenated, although this was eventually removed.
By the end of '57, Massey Ferguson had over 21,000 employees and European sales had increased by over 200%.
The Ferguson FE 35 was superseded by the MF 35 in 1958, which sported the now familiar colours of red & grey, together with the new triple triangle logo.
Later in 1958 the Massey Ferguson range expanded further, when the MF 65 tractor was announced. Advertising at the time stated that: "Together the 35 and 65 tractors make 100 percent Ferguson farming available to all".
Massey Ferguson experienced early success in the late 1950s, and quickly became iconic in the agricultural world.

In January 1958, Sir Edmund Hillary became the first person to reach the South Pole using vehicles - three modified TE20 petrol tractors!
In a telegram sent from Antarctica, Sir Edmund Hillary said; "Despite quite unsuitable conditions of soft snow and high altitudes our Ferguson's performed magnificently and it was their extreme reliability that made our trip to the pole possible."
Later in '58, sales reach a record high.
Massey Ferguson then bought perkins engines before setting up the tractor plant at Banner Lane, in Coventry, England.
A reorganisation took place in the UK during 1959, with a single management group United Kingdom Operations being established at Coventry's Headquarters.
Massey Ferguson's product line broadened hugely this year, with more than 60 new models being released. From the MF 65 Utility tractor to the MF 72 self-propelled and pull type combines, these early years set the standard for the MF brand.
The future looked bright for Massey Ferguson as it entered the 60s.
1960 Massey Ferguson
The 60s saw Massey Ferguson into its second decade, and the company celebrated an increase in sales since the late 50s.
October 1960 was the end of an era for many, when Harry Ferguson died at the age of 85; his memory lives on in every Massey Ferguson.
During 1960, the company continued to go from strength to strength, as a new tractor manufacturing plant was officially opened in Beauvais, France.
Elsewhere in Europe, Massey Ferguson acquired Landini tractor company and Figli SpA in Italy.
1962, the industry's first change-on-the-move gearbox, Multi-Power, was offered as an option on selected Massey Ferguson tractors. By this time, Massey Ferguson was operating 26 factories in nine countries across the globe!
New combine models were introduced during the year, including the MF 400 & MF 500 in the UK, and the MF 31 & MF 86 in Germany.
A new training school was opened in 1963 in Indianapolis, Indiana, and the introduction of a new line of combines was planned. To accommodate these new models, in 1964 a new combine plant was opened in Ontario, Canada.
Also this year, a new line of tractors was launched from the Banner Lane factory in Coventry. The range included three models, the MF 135, MF 165 and MF 175, also known as the Red Giants.
The Massey Ferguson 135, The Massey Ferguson 165 & of course the Massey Ferguson 175 are still highly regarded today.
