The basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le mura (also known as San Lorenzo al Verano) is one of the Seven churches. The Tour of the Seven Churches is a pilgrim itinerary practiced in Rome. Already in use in the Middle Ages, it was revitalized and formalized in the 1500s by San Filippo Neri. In its original form it consists of a ring route of about 20 km that touches the main churches of Rome at the time the saint lived, the first four are the Major Papal Basilicas:
- Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano
- St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican
- Basilica of St. Paul outside the walls
- Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore
- Basilica of San Lorenzo outside the walls
- Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme
- Sanctuary of the Madonna del Divino Amore (from the Jubilee of 2000, in place of the Basilica of San Sebastiano outside the walls).
The first news of the cult of the Seven Churches in Rome dates back at least to the seventh century when Saint Begga, returning to live as a hermit in her country, on her return from her pilgrimage to Rome, wanted to erect in addition to her other six oratories that gave the name to the monastery of “Sept-Eglises”.
However, it is with the institution of the Jubilees starting from 1300 and in particular from the second half of the 14th century that the lists of indulgences indicate the seven basilicas where these could be profited.
The basilica houses the tomb of St. Lawrence, the statesman Alcide De Gasperi and five popes: St. Zosimo, St. Sixtus III, St. Hilary, Damasus II and the blessed Pius IX. The church is preceded by a square, commissioned by Pope Pius IX, where there is a column surmounted by the bronze statue of San Lorenzo, the work of Stefano Galletti of 1865. The church is flanked by the monastery and the Romanesque bell tower (XII century). The basilica has three naves, and is made up of two basilicas built at different times, contiguous but not coaxial with each other: the Pelagian one (6th century), raised and transformed into a presbytery; and the honorian one (13th century).
The honorary basilica built by Pope Honorius III. The nave ends with the chapel of San Tarcisioi: in it there is a painting by Emilio Savonanzi (1619), with the representation of the burial of San Lorenzo. The left aisle ends with the "underground chapel of Santa Ciriaca", decorated in the seventeenth century: here there are two funerary monuments designed by Pietro da Cortona. The large presbytery corresponds to the central nave of the ancient Pelagian basilica built by Pope Pelagius II. Below is the crypt (4th century), from which it is possible to venerate the tombs of saints Lorenzo and Stefano protomartire. The ciborium, the work of the Cosmati family, dates back to 1148 and is made up of four porphyry columns surmounted by a pyramid-shaped roof. At the end of the presbytery is the episcopal seat of 1254, decorated with mosaics.
