The last stop on our Danube cruise was Budapest. We explored the lovely city where English was an option due to the local tourist commerce. Three blocks away from city center was a different story and all the hand gestures in the world would not render me comprehensible. I understand your disappointment as the physical environment is stunning. I don't conflate a population with their government as I find that people are basically all the same in navigating their life. Orban worries me. I'm sorry your adventure didn't pan out. If a Hungarian showed up on my doorstep seeking information , I would be at a loss. One can only do so much to assimilate. Good luck to you going forward and congratulations on giving it a go.

My dads family is from Sopron. We went to visit all his cousins back about 20 years ago and the language challenges were a huge thing. We flew to Graz, where 80% of the folks spoke English, then drove to Sopron where almost no one spoke English except two of our Hungarian relatives. And Hungarian words are very hard to read. Székesfehérvár...say that three time fast LOL.

Wow, crazy, but 100% accurate. I was completely shocked at the lack of English proficiency in a modern, Western European country. Communism ended in 91, they should have immediately instituted English learning in schools. At least from a business perspective I would have expected large western enterprises to be run by English speakers. Sadly not the case!

Hey Danny, this was special - looking forward to following your adventures and Rebecca and I will shoot you a DM when we're out in September. Sorry to hear about your Mom and best wishes for her situation. I worked in Europe + one year in South Africa back in the late 90s-oughts but was lucky to be in Cities/Regions where English was pretty well spoken and the projects I worked on had English as the official "project language". Anyway, stints in Munich, Lausanne, Dusseldorf, and Marbella that I'll always remember fondly. I did work on a 2-week project bid out of the Hilton on the riverfront in Budapest and loved the city but remember it wasn't as easy to communicate there. Prost my friend!

Glad to hear you're getting settled in up in the woods up there in lower Canada. For whatever reason I thought you spoke several languages so I would have thought one of them would be similar to Hungarian but apparently not so. After a pickup hockey game once two guys were chatting and I asked if they were speaking Finnish but they were Estonian (!) and apparently the only language similar to Estonian is Finnish. Languages, yo. If you don't mind me asking, how were the pups with the return trip? Were they able to travel in the airplane cabin, or did they have to go as cargo? Anyway, glad you're happy, that's the bottom line. Have a blast in the new digs. Cheers, Tom

I can most certainly relate… When I finished up high school, not knowing what to do and wanting a gap year, I tried too find a job. Found that very hard; one thing led to another; I found myself flying from Brisbane Australia to Paris where I met up with my long term pen friend Anna. I had been writing to Anna since a school project in grade 5. It was at a time when we started with pen and paper and a stamp through to the beginnings of email. Anna was from Częstochowa in Poland. She could speak multiple languages. What was supposed to be a short holiday and hopefully a job in London at the end, turned into a six year romance sprawled across Europe. The only reason I returned to Australia was because I could no longer extend my visa’s. Besides I needed to get back and get my butt to Uni. Anna wanted to go to Uni as well and become an English teacher. Which she did. Very fond memories of Europe and have since been back many times. Anna is now married with three kids and lives in Edinburgh. We keep in close contact. I ended up working in international banking and moved between Singapore, Hong Kong and The Middle East. When Covid hit we were lucky to be back in Australia. I ended up leaving employment, have become a recluse and have bought a 900 acre farm in southern Tasmania by the sea. When I saw the opening of your video… the home we are building is very similar in style. Love it..! Looking forward to what you are bringing going forward.

The She Shack will not be required since he will have his Man Cave upstairs, thus alleviating some of the chaos and cords in the main part of the house (I hope...but who am I kidding? Hi Danny! Glad that you are back. I experienced it myself, sometimes one has to take a big detour to get to the right next chapter of life, and I hope it will work for you as well. Hungary? Even for me as a German, a no go. They still support an extreme nationalistic government which is anti-European and discriminating and, generally , they are so locked up in their mindsets that I doubt they will develop to into a modern Western democratic society any further. Imo, once they were one of the freer more open states in the communists‘‘ Eastern block but they are now closer to the Soviet Union than they ever were. It is a real pity! Good luck in getting your feet on the new ground and with your new endeavors.

Danny: Welcome back!! Congratulations on your new home in Maine. Living in Massachusetts, I visit often and it is a beautiful state. My sympathies regarding your mom. my family has had to deal with that with several family members. It sounds like you have her set up to receive the kind of care she will need. Best of luck with that. Two comments on your video. 1) The first part of the video where you were doing voice over background music was rather difficult to understand. You voice was often drowned out by the music. I would suggest playing with the levels in the future to make your voice a bit more prominent relative to the music. 2) As a retired architect, several potential red flags jumped out at me when you showed the space on the second and described your intentions. Unless the trusses in that house were specifically designed for you for your intended use I would contact a structural engineer immediately, before you start closing things in. Trusses have the ability to span long distances using very light members often 2x4’s or 2x6’s. They are also very limited in the kinds of loads you can put on the members and where you can place the loads. I am assuming those trusses were designed for a normal floor loading for a bedroom or similar space. Depending on the type of equipment you are planning to use up there and how heavy it is, you may be overloading the bottom chord of those trusses. The bottom chord of that truss is also helping support the roof load. As you can imagine the snow load in Maine can be substantial. A structural engineer will be able to tell you based on the equipment you intend to use and where you will be placing it. Now is the time to check while everything is fairly wide open. There may be a fix for this. The real red flag for me was your idea for the record storage cubbies. IT is a great use of the space I agree. It may be quite problematic due to the dead loaf involved. Again a structural engineer can advise you on the feasibility of doing this . Again there may be something that can be done to accommodate this. Sorry to be the bad news bear, but better to find out now while it is open, than find out later the hard way. Good luck. Jim

Hey Jim, thank you for the commentary, really appreciate it! We should connect sometime given the close proximity!!! As to your comment… yes, having a structural engineer meeting next week, figured it would make a ton of sense (ha ha ha). Figure 2.5T for records, say another ton of equipment, furniture, etc. and yeah, it adds up, that’s one heavy “bed room”… Cheers Jim!

@@SonicFlare Danny you're welcome. I hated to rain on your parade. Once you get settled maybe we could connect. The residential building code in Massachusetts is the same base building code as Maine, but Maine may have some state amendments. The uniform live load for a Sleeping Room is 30 pounds per square foot. So that would be 14,400 lbs total for the room-including equipment and people. The problem is some of that equipment will probably present a much greater point load on a small floor area. If it is near the center of the room that could make things worse. The record storage is a whole 'nother issue. You would be bringing a large load down near where that vertical web support ties into the bottom chord of the truss. That web member is already helping to support the roof. As an architect, if my client had a use case like yours, I would feel the need to hire a structural engineer because this is hardly typical. Glad to hear you were one step ahead of me. Good luck.

THE AFTER ABOUT FIRST 50 SECS OF THIS VIDEO FADE OUT INTO BLACK is UNfortunately one of the common mistakes and UNforced errors by still UNseasoned , or out of season more likely , yet well ''intentioned'' videographers, of course. That been said , heard that your friend Sandalphon Aelways keen and kosher about all that stuff, records collecting , music and babies too, was saying that it happened among other things FOR THE MEMBERS OF THIS CLUB TO ''GROW AND MULTIPLY'' EVEN MORE , IN ALL SORTS OF WAYS, FOR THE GOOD OF ALL YOU LADS FIRST AND ABOVE ALL, FOR YOU STUCK WITH IT AND BY IT (THROUGH THE BAD MOMENTS IN SUCH ENDEAVORS, CONSIDERED VINTAGE AND PASSE BY MANY , JUST LIKE HE HAS) AS YOU SHALL SEE. BETTER TIMES SHINE AND RIDE JUST AHEAD...Shema!!!

Hungary is a beautiful country but the politics would keep me away. No English speakers would drive home the nail in the coffin. Too bad it didn't work out but the world is a big place. According to Google about 20% of Hungarians can speak English but of course much of that number could be rudimentary English, not fluent.

Well, that’s exactly it. We really loved Hungary as a country, Budapest is gorgeous, alas, it’s the English part that killed it for us. Google Translate becomes old really quick. On the business side of things, most simply do not speak English sufficiently well for you to have a proper business conversation without thinking to yourself “WTF am I doing here…” Given that it was the world I lived in, it really blew my brains out. Thanks for tuning in!
