Only British Railways would put a diesel engine designed for a ship inside a locomotive. Love the sound of them starting up.

Maybe, but the Sulzer engines used in a variety of first generation BR diesels like the Peaks and classes 24 to 27 were originally designed for marine use. And gas turbine engines originally designed for aircraft have been redesigned for use in ships.

At one time there were around 5 or 6 southbound deltic hauled trains before and after midnight from Edinburgh. I would lie awake and could hear them throttle up after rounding Monktonhall Junction on the East Coast Main Line over two miles away. You could then hear them go all the way towards Longniddry before the noise abated.

Lord above! That high speed Napier deltic is just amazing! Oddly they did a similar thing with the Sabre engine in the Typhoon fighter. It was a twin crankshaft 24 cylinder sleeve valve engine that revved much higher than the conventional V12s and radials. Not many recordings of the sound but worth finding.

The build quality of Napier-Sabre in the Typhoon and Tempest was so poor that the brilliant engineering just did not shine through. When everything went well...Read Pierre Clostermann.

I worked on one or two Deltics at York MPD. I was an apprentice there around 1968/69. They came in only to have minor faults fixed. I think they occasionally had an A or B exam.

Deltics are twostroke too with 18 cyls apposed arranged in a triangle with 3 banks of 6
@TrimeshSZ
@TrimeshSZ 3 жыл бұрын
It's a wonderfully insane design - opposed piston engines are pretty wacky things anyway, but Napier really outdid themselves with this one. Presumably someone sat down and went "the world really needs an 18 cylinder opposed piston 2-stroke diesel engine with 3 crankshafts - nothing could possibly go wrong with a design this complex!". And then they actually made it work.

I also remember the sound filling the air under the roof at Liverpool Lime Street - blood curdling noise when they're really winding up! The Napiers and the howl of the Vulcan bomber are probably the two sounds that truly make the hair on the back of your neck stand up!! Sadly both now confined to a life of preservation......

It's a "token" that is used on most heritage railways to avoid the embarrassment of meeting another train head on on a single track line. I think India and Pakistan still use them today. No token = no go!

Nah, diesel engines are actually quite good from a CO2 point of view. It is very bad from a smog point of view, though. But an old loco incidentally hauling some passengers has a negligible effect (yes, even if you see wafts of smoke coming out of the exhaust) compared to the people who drive their cars to work daily or who travel by airplane.
