Bee careful Yappy, when these guys are agitated they produce a foul chemical stream. Apparently they are fond of getting tangled in long hair as well (not a problem for you). Ive heard some nightmare stories from friends down in LA (lower Alabama).

I find things like these really interesting. Its like the crane flies in the uk, heavily misunderstood bugs but big compared to others. We have bumblebees here aswell and those are also misunderstood. Both insects mentioned are physically harmless but everyone kills them out of fear. Crane fly can only drink nectar, no mouth parts to bite and as a larvae they eat mosquitoes. Bumblebees (one white band is the male worker) cant actually sting you as they have no stinger even though they pretend they do, which is adorable for such a fuzzy clumbsy bug. I wonder what birds rely on those hoppers for their young this time of year?

Those are still growing, they get much bigger. They are a light tannish/orange with reddish wings once adults. Adults can get to about 4". They are horrible garden pests as you can imagine. I purposely ran one over with my van a few days ago in my driveway. I hate them.
