The Aialik Glacier is a glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park. About 15 miles from Seward, it is the largest glacier in Aialik Bay and drains the Harding Icefield. The Harding Icefield, the largest icefield contained entirely within the United States, is over 1,100 square miles and spawns some 40 glaciers. Aialik glacier is generally very stable and such massive calving events are rare. Most calving of the Aialik glacier occurs in May and June.

Glacial calving is a sign of a healthy glacier ! The ice flows downhill because of the weight of the snow and ice on the top of the glacier, a natural process that has been occuring for millions of years. As the face of the glacier is pushed over open water, calving occurs! So celebrate! This video is a sign that the Aialik glacier is still alive and well for the time being. If calving stops occuring, that is actually a very bad sign for the glacier, as it likely indicates it's stopped moving and has become a snowfield, at which point it will begin to melt back from the water's edge. That having been said, Aialak glacier IS retreating (which means more melts than it receives new snowfall each year on average) and climate change is certainly a likely factor. So my advice would be - enjoy this show of nature's might with joy and admiration, but don't forget the climate crisis melting the ice away in under-ice rivers underneath, hidden from our gaze.

@@calvinjackson5306 Calving is caused primarily by the weight of new snow on the glacier pushing it downhill - when this happens to a waterfront glacier, it will calve as it is pushed over open water which cannot support the weight of the ice. So actually, the result of global warming will be that calving will stop as the glacier melts to the point that it no longer flows downhill. When that happens it becomes a "snowfield" instead of a "glacier". Calving is a natural process that has been occuring millions of years before humans, and is actually a sign the glacier is still moving and healthy :) This glacier is retreating however due to climate change - but that just means that more is melting from the glacier then new snow is falling. Most melting is not due to calving at the waterfront.

Well, you could look at it two ways. Glacial calving has been occuring since the earth had ice - a healthy glacier "flows" downhill, pushed by the weight of new snowfall. This is a waterfront glacier - so irregardless of global temperature, as long as the glacier has not melted so much that it stops moving downhill and becomes a snowfield instead of a glacier (which would be grim indeed), then it will always calve as it is pushed over open water that, unlike land, cannot support the weight of all that ice. Calving is a sign that the glacier is still healthy and flowing downhill, so it's kind of a good thing and an incredible sight at that! On the other hand - this glacier is "retreating" which means that it is not getting as much new snowfall each year as it is calving off, which is obviously bad (and likely due to climate change). Either way, nature is awe inspiring in its glory and I think it would be follish to be so lost in thought over what is being lost so as to not enjoy the magnificent, millions of years old show is occuring before you, that you may never see again. These people are simply enjoying the outdoors and a spectacular display of mother nature's might, no need to be offended at the enjoyment or expense of others :) Please come up to Alaska and appreciate all the magnicence of the natural world that Alaska has to offer you! - perhaps you will find yourself silent in awe, or perhaps - you'll even catch yourself cheering in excitement a time or two!

There's no problem! Calving occurs year round (even when tourist boats aren't able to run) and on glaciers like this one, almost daily - it's caused by the weight of all that snow and ice pushing the glacier downhill, causing it to "flow" until it's over water. Since water cannot support the weight of all that snow and ice, calving occurs! Ailiak is a relatively fast moving glacier, so it's pretty active calving-wise despite being relatively stable.

Well, it's a bit complex. Glacial calving it could be argued is a good thing, because it's a sign that the glacier still has enough weight and new snowfall to continue flowing downhill (being pushed over open water causes the calving). When a glacier stops flowing it becomes a snowfield, and calving will eventually stop entirely as it starts to melt back from the waterfront. That having been said, increased calving can be a sign of climate change, as increased snowmelt destabilizes the ice and water flowing below the glacier can lubricate it, speeding its downhill flow.

Calving occurs in all water front glaciers (irregardless of whether they are retreating or advancing) and has for millions of years. As snow accumilates at the top of the glacier, the weight causes the glacier to "flow" downwards. On a waterfront glacier, the glacier flows onto open water, which is not able to support the weight of all that snow and ice, causing calving. As for why people are excited to see it - witnessing powerful forces of nature is something I consider an important part of the human experience. We knew the glacier might calve while we were there, and we stayed extra time to hopefully not miss it. Everyone was excited that we were there to see the show :)

The United Nations recently celebrated the International Mother Earth Day as a reminder to protect the environment. Heat waves, droughts, fires and heavy rains that cause severe flooding have become more frequent in many parts of the world due to climate change, which affects the entire worldwide population. The Earth is facing a “triple planetary crisis,” warn UN officials. Climate disruption, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste are the main areas of concern regarding the current state of the environment. This year, the Earth Day’s theme is “Invest In Our Planet,” so what would humanity's best investment for the planet be? We need to start by cleaning up the planet. There is no place on Earth where the air and water are clean, and that's a real problem. In theory, tackling this issue should be our priority when it comes to taking action to improve the dismal state of our planet. But let’s not fool ourselves. Such a plan alone will solve nothing. It will only help the international organizations to justify their own existence. They tick off "done" to raise as much money as they want, and that's it. If we do not improve relations between us, we will not be able to achieve the great and ambitious improvement in nature that we want and need to attain globally. We will never achieve a good result through bureaucratic, mechanical measures. There are a lot of people sitting in their comfortable offices profiting from the environmental crisis and demanding money and respect. They keep flying from one end of the world to the other on all kinds of missions to make a lot of noise with what they are "doing" and which everyone "needs to hear" as if that alone means something is happening, but in practice we see no real progress. The Earth must also be cleansed of them, of these people who engage in useless campaigns that only cause harm because they mislead the world, leading it away from the real solution. The cleaning of the planet should start inside out. If we do not clean the planet from within, and continue with our reckless behavior and the selfish nature of our hearts as before, nothing will change for the better. The immense sums invested in environmental initiatives should be directed to spreading an educational process aimed at improving the way we relate to each other. Humans are the most developed and influential factors of all of nature's levels: still, vegetative, animate and human. Since we occupy the highest level in nature, positively affecting the environment, the climate, and nature in general can be achieved by reaching positive relations among us. On the contrary, by letting our divisive drives tear apart human relations, we also destroy our surrounding environment, the very nature that our lives depend on. The more we humans are able to correct ourselves by changing our divisive attitudes toward each other into positive attitudes of mutual support, encouragement, mutual responsibility, and reciprocal concern, the more we will receive positive feedback from nature. And the more we develop without making this necessary correction, the more negative feedback we will receive from nature, as we have experienced in the form of natural disasters, pandemics. It is of utmost importance for us to organize our thoughts, desires and qualities so that we understand that saving the environment and a shift to a better future depend solely on changing our attitudes to each other: from antagonistic egoism to positive, compassionate and cooperative relationships.

Certainly Jesus, son of Mary (the servant and messenger of Allah ), peace be upon both of them, will descend in Syria - Al-Manara, on two angel wings, wearing two dresses of cotton, his face dripping with water as if he was coming out of a shower, his breath reaching the tip of his fingers at the length of his arm, killing everyone who entered his breath except Muslims, he breaks the cross, kills the pig and accepts only the religion of Islam, he prays with the Muslims in the Al-Aqsa Mosque, then he will kills the Antichrist, then he and those with him hide on Mount Al-Tur for fear of Gog and Magog { Gog and Magog will kill everyone on the earth except Jesus and his companions and they will eat the green, dry and inanimate opjects, then Jesus prays to Allah to kill them, so they all die because of a flying worm that enters in their noses, then he would rule the earth for 40 years in which love, justice and much prosperity would prevail even children play with snaks and wolves guard the cattle , then he would die and be buried in Muslim cemeteries. [4:171] O People of the Scripture! Do not exaggerate in your religion nor utter aught concerning Allah save the truth. The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only a messenger of Allah, and His word which He conveyed unto Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers, and say not "Three" - Cease! (it is) better for you! - Allah is only One God. Far is it removed from His Transcendent Majesty that He should have a son. His is all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is sufficient as Defender. [4:172] The Messiah will never scorn to be a slave unto Allah, nor will the favoured angels. Whoso scorneth His service and is proud, all such will He assemble unto Him; [4:173] Then, as for those who believed and did good works, unto them will He pay their wages in full, adding unto them of His bounty; and as for those who were scornful and proud, them will He punish with a painful doom. And they will not find for them, against Allah, any protecting friend or helper. [4:174] O mankind! Now hath a proof from your Lord come unto you, and We have sent down unto you a clear light; [4:175] As for those who believe in Allah, and hold fast unto Him, them He will cause to enter into His mercy and grace, and will guide them unto Him by a straight road. 19:81] And they have chosen (other) gods beside Allah that they may be a power for them. [19:82] Nay, but they will deny their worship of them, and become opponents unto them. [19:83] Seest thou not that We have set the devils on the disbelievers to confound them with confusion ? [19:84] So make no haste against them (O Muhammad). We do but number unto them a sum (of days). [19:85] On the day when We shall gather the righteous unto the Beneficent, a goodly company. [19:86] And drive the guilty unto hell, a weary herd, [19:87] They will have no power of intercession, save him who hath made a covenant with his Lord. [19:88] And they say: The Beneficent hath taken unto Himself a son. [19:89] Assuredly ye utter a disastrous thing [19:90] Whereby almost the heavens are torn, and the earth is split asunder and the mountains fall in ruins, [19:91] That ye ascribe unto the Beneficent a son, [19:92] When it is not meet for (the Majesty of) the Beneficent that He should choose a son. [19:93] There is none in the heavens and the earth but cometh unto the Beneficent as a slave. [19:94] Verily He knoweth them and numbereth them with (right) numbering. [19:95] And each one of them will come unto Him on the Day of Resurrection, alone. [19:96] Lo! those who believe and do good works, the Beneficent will appoint for them love. [19:97] And We make (this Scripture) easy in thy tongue, (O Muhammad) only that thou mayst bear good tidings therewith unto those who ward off (evil), and warn therewith the froward folk. [19:98] And how many a generation before them have We destroyed! Canst thou (Muhammad) see a single man of them, or hear from them the slightest sound ? 39:4] If Allah had willed to choose a son, He could have chosen what He would of that which He hath created. Be He Glorified! He is Allah, the One, the Absolute. [39:5] He hath created the heavens and the earth with truth. He maketh night to succeed day, and He maketh day to succeed night, and He constraineth the sun and the moon to give service, each running on for an appointed term. Is not He the Mighty, the Forgiver ? [39:6] He created you from one being, then from that (being) He made its mate; and He hath provided for you of cattle eight kinds. He created you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, in a threefold gloom. Such is Allah, your Lord. His is the Sovereignty. There is no God save Him. How then are ye turned away ? [39:7] If ye are thankless, yet Allah is Independent of you, though He is not pleased with thanklessness for His bondmen; and if ye are thankful He is pleased therewith for you. No laden soul will bear another’s load. Then unto your Lord is your return; and He will tell you what ye used to do. Lo! He knoweth what is in the breasts (of men). ------------------------------------------------ .How many children would you like to have? While climate change is certainly a concern, it's worth noting that glacial calving is natural and always occurs in tidewater glaciers like the Aialik Glacier, even in glaciers that are advancing. It's caused because glaciers "flow" downhill - and when it is pushed over open water pieces fall off. While the Aialik glacier IS retreating, the difference between a glacier that is "advancing" vs. one that is "retreating" is that a glacier that is advancing receives on average more snowfall than it looses to calving in a given year. So climate change aside (which can certainly produce larger and more frequent calving and reduce snowfall) this is a natural process that would be occuring even if we were in an iceage. So while I agree with your concern regarding climate change - in my opinion there's no harm in admiring a powerful, awe-inspiring natural process that has been occuring since long before humans inhabited this planet.

As long as snow falls, it will be compacted to ice which will slide down hill and fall off the edge of the land into the sea. What you're seeing is NOT the destruction of ice, but the endless cycle. HOWEVER, if Planet Earth and the air and water are warming up, then glaciers will gradually have less and less volume and the sea will have MORE volume. THAT is what we should worry about, not the continuous cycle.

@@michaelnovela3469 it's your right to not enjoy nature's beauty and might if you so choose, but personally I believe that allowing the humanity's impact to ruin nature for you only draws you further from the natural world. The best way to get people to care about nature is to bring them to it, to have them feel the mist of the waterfalls, dance beneath the aurora, and watch in awe at the might of the glaciers. Your sense of moral superiority betrays you. My advice is to impassion yourself with the experiences of the natural world, and share those experiences with others. Worry more about teaching people to love and enjoy and protect nature, and worry less about how others experience it.
