My best friend and I dug up history at an old Texas town dump in the late 60's. We found hundreds of pre-1860 bottles and tons of silverware and plates,cups,saucers. We stopped saving the old medicine bottles because there were so many of them. Lots and lots of old coins along with jewelry (mostly costume).

This brings back fond memories of digging with my mom about 50 years ago in Poplar, WI in a place she said her grandmother had a little cabin. We found bottles and some cool stuff I had no idea what most of it was but she did. We were so sweaty and dirty afterwards. We bathed in the poplar river with ivory soap cuz it floats.

I am from TN and worked for PanAmerican Consultants. Maritime and terrestrial archeology. I enjoy your content. We found some civil war and Blackfoot Indian sites that were amazing. Louisiana yielded amazing Indian artifacts too. You are passionate!

haha yeah, very passionate! wow i gotta get out east some time.. i love digging in this area, but there were no settlers here til the early 1860s at the earliest.. the oldest town is from like 1870 (if you exclude army garrisons and forts) but out east and down south, some of that stuff is from like the 1600s! id be happy to hit anything before 1850 to be honest.. well thanks for watching! and be sure to follow us on facebook if you are over there, its just "below the plains" thanks!

haha yeah i like their channel too.. probably my favorite one from the UK.. and yeah deadwood.......... we have been working on getting in somewhere there for about a year now. its kind of all cemented over now, but there is still a bunch of stuff left open.. but the downtown area is basically all cement now, so idk if we would be able to hit a saloon but, id honestly be happy if we got to dig anything at all. well thank you, we really appreciate that, glad you found us, and thanks for leaving us a comment

My favorite episode yet, by far. Incredible dig! I inherited a collection of found antique bottles, in my case, I am lucky the finder already cleaned them up to immaculate condition. Watching your videos, I learn how to identify some of my old bottles. One of the bottles has a super narrow, constricted open neck, but a roomy circular , flat bottle base. I'm guessing earliest 1800's. That was some totally mucky water, you are a true archeologist!

My husband and I dug near the house where hid dad lived, as did his dad and his dad. Going back into the mid 1800’s. We found a gallon crock that’s marked with; Revigator and other writing, we dug around a bit more and found old canning jars still had stuff in them along with one old coke bottle and 3 milk jars. We will be digging more but this is what we found so far, oh we also found a 2nd crock, a large one with a number 8 and made in Organ. Love your videos should add we are in our mid 60’s and would love to dig around here but not having the youth we did have is hard. ✌🏽

I am a History but and I love how packed full of information your videos are. I think that is why I love metal detecting and bottle digging so much. There isn't one window in my home without bottles adorning them full of flowers during the warmer months. It really give the house a "real homey" touch. I get compliments from everyone about how pretty it looks even the Amazon delivery guy loves it. What is the long pole you use to dig with? It looks like rebar, but I also know they make them out of fiberglass or plastic too. I made a long screwdriver looking handbook out of ash. I've been using this one for the past 8 years and it hasn't broken yet!

oh yeah! same here.. i have a bunch of bottles in my windows and all over my shelves.. i have old clay flower pots that ive found and glued back together and i use those.. and old crocks too.. they just look so good! and the best part is that they are authentic pieces, and not just modern replicas!! i know some people who make drinking glasses out of the the broken sodas, and they are super cool. some people make jewelry out of the old tops that were knocked off. i was thinking about doing that someday myself. and the long pole? im not sure exactly what you mean. do you mean the stick we use to dig the bottles out? it was just a cylindrical stick of wood we got at a hardware store and we just sharpened the end.. we filmed this a while ago, so we quit using that and just use a trowel now.. mostly because its faster to get them out, which helps speed the videos along. but basically you can just use an old broom handle and sharpen the edge, and cut it down to about 18 inches. ive also heard that using a thin piece of PVC pipe works too.. basically just do the same thing, get about an 18 inch piece of a pipe thats fairly thin around.. maybe 3/4 inch.. but i havent tried this before.. i know people tend to try to stay away from using metal because its way easier to damage the bottle, and using wood or plastics make it less likely that you will scratch or break the bottle. hope that was helpful! thanks for watching

Amazing how many unbroken bottles you're finding! Back in the 60's my buddy and I discovered a garbage dump from old Fort Custer in Montana. For every unbroken bottle we scratched through a few hundred broken ones. Did find some old Cavalry gear though. Leather scraps, uniform scraps, knives, forks, spoons, uniform buttons and a couple "US" Belt Buckles. Also found the rifle range and dozens of cartridge cases, lead, and complete rounds. I remember some odd large bottles we found with round bottoms and pointed bottoms...no idea what they once held.(?)

The bottles that you found with pointed and round bases are made that way so they don't stand on a flat surface. They are meant to be half buried in the ground to keep cool and help to lengthen the life of the contents.

Dear Diggers, I have read in different places that in the latter days that people would throw their trash in the outhouse hole (trash) that would not burn and when it was almost full they would dig another hole for the outhouse. Then would fill the old one up with dirt. In the larger cities they would find beautiful colored bottles in the outhouse digs! Cheers!!🤪

yeah i know! i will never forget the first time i watched tom dig out these bottles.. it blew my mind, but then it all just kind of made sense.. they just threw out what wouldnt burn. and i suppose breaking it would save room, but it would come with the risk of getting broken glass all over the place, and a cut could be a death sentence back then. thanks for watching! and commenting!

All the Leeds bottles was nice as was several others. And that Cobalt Blue Lamp......... Beautiful..... As you said, shame it was broken. All in all, though a really good dig and a super loaded pit. You had to be what? At least 7 ft deep............. You definitely earned this one. You always end up with some dirt on ya, but pretty sure this was the dirtiest I've ever seen you have to get for the goodies. Awesome job guys.

Thanks for adding the info you collect after the dig, identifying the labels & companies & showing time frames for things you find. I trust your tetanus shots are up to date; i worry about those bare hands in the broken glass.
