I can only hope the CCS world gets their poop together and delivers this kind of experience in next few years. The frustrating thing is it's not like this is new, this is how it's been with Tesla for a decade. So the CCS operators and manufacturers have no excuse. Thanks for another great video Dave.

I'm afraid that CCS chargers giving people a bad taste of EV's is actually part of the plan. How else can "we" continue to see ICE cars if Ev charging works well? I know this sounds sarcastic, but I assure you I'm quite serious. GM did it back in the 90's... they made EV1 and said the battery tech wasn't there... but 18650 batteries were common at the time. They wanted to be able to justify continuing to sell ICE.... so now we have the same game but with the charging infrastructure.

CCS charging station shall be installed and maintained by EV car dealership and manufacturers. You cannot expect 3rd party EV power station provider to do as good of a job because they sub-contract the installation and maintenance to a 4th party to cut cost. EV public charging stations are a profit making center and a brand loyalty builder for a EV car company. Get on board Ford and GM and build your network of EV charging stations.

@@videopyc there are thousands of gas stations all over the country and all of their pumps are provided by a 4th party (pump maker)to the 3rd party (gas station). GM and Ford do not provide gas pumps yet they work just fine. Is it wrong to expect same of CCS chargers?

@@ai4pxo one makes much money on selling gas, apparently. It’s the fact that they get you to their retail location and then you stop and spend $. But at least it’s a super well understood business with mature supply chain and inputs and outputs and the ability to radically change price when need be. Does any of that sound like the CCS world now? Nope. Except for a very few logical spots like truck stops where it’s a win win that the stations are there. Instead what I see the most after charging roughly 150 DCFC sessions with an EV6 Light is that if anything the least logical spots tend to have the highest prices, hardly any pricing is flexible with the exception of EVgo (and of course Tesla). In the big picture “are we there yet” for CCS charging I’d say say we are not even close to having good locations, good hardware, a good company or companies with a high incentive to provide a Tesla like experience that’s safe, reliable, easy and properly priced.
@ai4px

@@skyemalcolm most gas stations don't make much money on gas, they make money on cokes and lotto scratchers. I can't imagine why gas stations wouldn't want bored people hanging out for 30minutes! I called Loves Truckstops when they were breaking ground on a station near Santee SC and suggested this very thing. They had no foresight and now three years later there is a Tesla Super charger across the exit ramp at a Dairy Queen. At least Wawa has figured it out.

I don't even 'plan' a roadtrip. I just put in a destination and listen to the car. Like, it's still an EV and therefore charging is "slow" (ie ~1 hour of charging for every ~6 hours of driving), but it's almost as easy as gas cars. The major issue is V2 chargers are terrible, but v3 are almost always amazing.

Keep in mind that older models may not take advantage of the 250 kW rate, or that the amount of time spent utilizing the higher power is limited. We find the charger that takes us off route the least and has facilities that are open when we’re traveling after 9pm, so ones at highway rest areas rather than ending up at a closed shopping mall miles off course.

Dave -- I'm pretty sure I saw Bailey nodding in agreement with you while you were talking about that Wawa chili. Though, it looks like you ate it, anyway. 😁 Seriously, thanks again for another road trip video. And gosh golly, you could make a whole video about wandering around Buc-ees, and taking a closer look at the things that grab your attention. And we really do want to see another stop at South of the Border. A few other bits: "This is what I watch on television these days." Long videos are perfectly fine with me. You have a very good mix of useful information and entertainment. "I'm looking forward for your video of the trip back home." Always good to see "getting on the road in the wee hours of the morning." The best time to travel, in my opinion. One more time in Autopilot jail, and you'll have to rename your car "Jailbird." Ultimately, I expect CCS will get its act together. Meanwhile, it really just hurts the whole concept of "EV adoption" with two different, incompatible systems. And you came "this close" to waiting in line a few times -- on the road to "mainstream" EV adoption, the numbers will change all the time. When you get to a charging station and there are 20 or 30 or 40 cars in line ahead of you, then "it won't be so easy." Finally, yes, Bailey is awesome. You have served as a fine chauffeur. Thanks again for a fine, fun video!

Dave, Great rode trip! Also a dedicated Tesla SC believer. Two comments: 1) I have identical Model S (without Baily), and on my trip to MN from OH in 19F temp, after a recharge to 85%, and error came up stating no method of payment available, and no further SC allowed until payment provided, all despite having a valid cc on my Tesla account. While driving I added another valid cc to my Tesla account, and it did not remove the dash error. I had to divert to a CCS station when down to 20% (validated the need to carry a CCS adapter). Then by chance I stopped by a Tesla SC to just plug in to see what would happen, and that cleared the error on my dash thereafter. Have you encountered this anytime on the Tesla SC network (when in 19F temps)? Comment 2: FYI ONLY On your St George stop, that Model Y didn't have red side walls, but rather, rim savers that were red in color. Regards to Kyle too!

Pretty good test for a model S in very cold weather. Your rated range is based on a set value which is about 240 wh/mile, so if you drive at 78 mph in windy conditions at 19 degrees with battery preheating, you may end up getting 460 wh/mile, which is close to 50% efficiency. Extreme conditions.

Great video on an East Coast road trip during the Pre- Christmas time. I am in Eastern NC, have Model Y for a year, a Beta tester for six months. Only one road trip in the Summer, but it was also flawless. Suggestion: my understanding of the battery icon is that that is only shows battery percentage times EPA range. Thus, it is useless for predicting actual range. I always leave mine set to percentage.. One always uses the charge-predicted percentage, which, as you saw, works well. As also noted in other comments, the consumption/range plot works great. As for Autopilot strikes, or jail, in addition to torque on the steering wheel, you have to keep your eyes on the road. I have never gotten a strike in about 5K miles on FSD Beta. Again, the video was so good, I, too, can't believe I watched the whole thing.

Awesome road trip and advice. Too bad Bailey didn’t get the prime center stage and was sleepy most of the ride. I think Tesla calculates for people with a lead foot like me. I usually will get bad efficiency because of speeds traveled. Usually I never get close to the epa rated efficiency.

Fun video! I noticed a very similar issue in my Model Y while supercharging in the cold where it kept telling me I’d arrive at my destination with -5% even though the difference in predicted range and actual range was massive. I sat and waited to charge for an extra 15 minutes until it showed a 8% arrival, but then the second I stopped charging it jumped up and showed I’d arrive with 30% which was accurate. It was a big waste of time and money to sit there that extra time, especially while I had cranky tired kids in the back. I have to think there’s some sort of bug in the Tesla estimation when it’s below freezing. Maybe it’s not taking conditioning if the batteries into account or something. I hope it’s resolved soon.

I had the same thing happen to me that you had with the calculation to Brunswick GA. It was a relatively cold day and I was driving home from Ottawa. I started my Navigation and was 30 minutes from the charger and the battery started preconditioning as soon as I set my navigation. I think there is a slight flaw in the range estimation when preconditioning. I have Teslafi and noticed that is seemed to use the preconditioning miles/wh (which sucks because it draws a lot of power to precondition in colder weather) instead of a more realistic rate. I stayed and charged 15 min more than I needed to. The range estimate went up 15% as soon as I pulled away from the charger. The estimator is more realistic when you have travelled some time and preconditioning isn’t the only mileage Tesla uses to calculate estimated arrival charge.

Dave, thanks for the good video. Tesla may be staggering cars on their charging network to give the best results. That is why the car gives short drives between each plug in. No waiting. Fast exit. Since the time of FREE forever charging, credits for fast charging being denied, or cars being black balled from plugging in, or even idle fees, the network can be changed. It is great you have the other adapters. I'm sure Tesla will open up their network soon to non Tesla vehicles. The empty spots will bring in revenue.

This is why I sold my Taycan and bought a Tesla. I absolutely adored that car, but the charging anxiety and shenanigans were too much and affected my overall travel enjoyment. I don't see a quick way forward for CCS vehicles, other than to mooch off of Superchargers at some point. I think the other automakers are still waiting for the government to help fix their problem, rather than being proactive like Tesla in building out their infrastructure. Tesla is so far ahead in so many tangible and intangible ways.

Be careful doing that though through the west. Super Chargers can be spaced 100 - 150 miles apart on stretches and if you opt to skip one, you probably won't make it to the next. Always check, if you are going to skip a charger, that you can still make the next one if you do.

At the end of the day not all folks needs for long road trips fit into Tesla vehicles lineup: all 4 models are coupes, nonpractical for a family. For instance for my family road trips are very rare but we need 3 full rows vehicle with decent room in the third row for adults. Plus decent luggage space. Only Rivian R1S might fit those needs in the future. Yet it is too expensive. We do not need to tow. Our area can get quite cold: inland Pacific north west. We simply opted for a preown Chrysler Pacifica PHEV for now.

Because they cheesed off many a millennial minivans aren’t allegedly cool. However given the very real efficiency constraints with EVs it seems to me there’s a massive unmet need for EV people movers, minivans, tall 3 row station wagons, whatever you want to call them is fine but as you say there’s a real need to move many people and there’s just no option yet.

Now that they tightened the warnings, I turn FSD off for road trips. You still have Autupilot but it’s it a stringent. Think Tesla did this because of the greater distribution.

I decided to push the easy button and try a Tesla Model Y 2021 updated model and got to say on a ABRP trip form Vancouver to Calgary it seems a really easy road trip with each stop for 1/2hour after 3-1/2 hours of driving at around each meal break, charging time is about the same as my Ioniq 5 AWD long range but it has more stops. But the big point is the reliable Tesla chargers verses the poor Electrified Canada network, I know as I do this trip often! But and a big but, Chevron on Run is coming on this corridor with much better customer satisfaction (based on Plugshare reports), they care about the charger status and each on teh run usually has someone come out to not only mention coming into the store but also insuring your charge experience is great. How would think that this would be a Petro company concerned about EV charger satisfaction but Koodoos to Chevron! Are you listening Electrified Canada?

that try was on A Better Route Planner, not the actual car just to see how well it handles the elevation changes through the mountains in BC and Alberta.

Here in the states we are starting to see a number of charger and gas station combinations. Shell Recharge is theoretically the big player but I haven’t seen a ton of their new stuff go in the ground in Ohio yet. Circle K is also apparently planning a Canadian and US strategy. Long term converting petrol stations over to partial and eventually fully electric ought to be the right move especially where there isn’t good real estate to site chargers near highways.

Dave, you could have easily made it to Brunswick without the extra wait time. The calculation was probably based on battery pre-conditioning at 19 degrees. I would have unplugged at 250 mile range and removed the super charger as a destination. I've seen this on my Model Y as well. If you see that you are easily going to make it to the charger with 60 miles to go, then change the charger to your destination to begin the pre-conditioning process.

Yulee is an especially useful stop as Florida Power and Light has 6 350kw CCS chargers there too. You probably drove past them on the way in. They are often in use. FPL only has a few 350kw chargers in Florida, but they seem to be reliable.

Be very careful because I had a Tesla superstation showing available when I was at 35% and I would get to that location with 6% so I figured the same and I could save time by going on to the next location rather than listen to what the car was telling me and stop at 35%, I went to the next location and it was not available yet, it was a new superstation location and it showed available but it was not completed yet,. I ended up having to go to a hotel in charge on a destination charger for an hour and 15 minutes just to get home and I was only 45 minutes from home. I would only recommend using your technique, when you know the route and the chargers are available. Tesla supercharger network is very good, but not perfect. I had terrible range anxiety and was almost stranded, so be very careful. And know you’re route. Maybe check with Tesla some how before your trip to verify all potential charging stations are fully functional. Love your Chanel❤️

Can you road trip the original Route 66 in any EV? I appreciate what Tesla has done to kickstart the industry as a whole but for me personally I'm not a fan of their designs and will stick to my CCS but I'm also not in the US, not that there isn't issues where I live either on the CCS 2 chargers.

Does your S have the new energy graph yet? I use that and leave the car on percentage. The miles is rated by percent, so IMHO worthless.

Thanks Dave for the road trip, but I have questions, is the driving regen setup different on the model S than model Y, back about 1 year ago or slightly more there was two levels of regen you could pick on the Model 3 & Y, then Tesla in their mindless control decided that the regen 2 level option should not be available any longer

put something dark like a black towel along the center of the passenger seat. That will greatly reduce screen glare on cars with white seats. And maybe edit out you running through stop signs.
