Thanks to Ravi and Anoushka, I passed a forced philosophy course during engineering school. I Will never forget when I went to the teachers office to discuss a possible workaround to my bad grades, despite assisting almost every lesson. He was in his computer listening music and I said "oh, is this ravi shankar?" He turns around perplexed, 5 second uncomfortable silence and says: "no, this is anoushka shankar, his daughter. What do you want?" For some reason I approved the course.

I wonder why music invented in my own country seem so foreign to me. Is it because it was meant to be played in courts and temples?
@Minabezerai
@Minabezerai 8 жыл бұрын
+Vinay Seth Were you born in india? Your question is very interesting. I am not indian myself, but i find it easy and rather relaxing to listen to this kind of music. Maybe that's because i don't have to carry any cultural burden, or be embarrassed about not readily knowing the history behind the music. But the music itself is enough pull for me to be curious about indian culture and history that i think the musicians job has been more than accomplished, if that was indeed part of their purpose: getting everyone to enjoy what this rich culture has to offer.
@vinayseth1114

+Minab Asfaha Or maybe because I grew up in a metropolitan city full of aggression and violence, and hence relate to that kind of music more? I don't think that homogenous idea of 'culture' exists anymore in today's world. I lived in a small town in my own country for a while and felt like it was a different planet altogether lol. I agree with you that taste can be biased by cultural burden and prejudice, but not in my case, I think.

I think it all depends on one's upbringing and outlook on life. In fact, the taste for appreciating good music has to be nurtured. Based on your appreciation it is apparent that this music has an universal appeal .....and is indeed great music.

@@vinayseth1114 no matter where you were originally from, it just took a radio to listen to all these (if you are not born after 2005 lol.. until then atleast radio lived) Anyone who was born before late 2000s in India would know this kinda music.. However poor/rich , small town/city you were brought up in.. starting from a beggar(not blaming) till the richest person had a radio, in which you could always tune into- All India Radio/radio cassttes/ audio cd/pen drive/gramaphone according to the changing era they took birth in.. if you are born in the late 2000s, I would suggest you to search such master pieces in KZfaq.. it's a boon too.. it's just how we try to explore things no matter however you were brought up/wherever you were born.. when you grow up you eventually tend to explore few on your own.. 😊my Best wishes to you to find many such music numbers.. I hope in these 2 years (I see your comment was from 2 years ago) you might have already have searched n got a collection.. if not, Here are some musical mastroes by whose name you can search the music master pieces : Pandit Shri Ravi Shankar(Sitar), Kunnakudi Vaidhyanathan(Violin), Vikku Vinayakram(Ghatam), Pandit Bhawani Shankar/ Thiruvarur Bhaktavatchalam(Pakhawaj/Mridhangam), Selvaganesh/Harishankar(Kanjira), Mandolin(U Srinivas), Sheik Chinna Moulana(Nadaswaram), Ustad Bismillah Khan ( Shehnai), Dr. Balamuralikrishna, Semmangudi Srinivas Iyer/T.N.Seshsgopalan, Tiger Varadhachari/MD Ramanathan/ Ustad Rashid /Bharat Ratna M.S.Subhalakshmi/Girija Devi ji/Pandit Jasraj/Pandit Bhimsen Joshi/Gangubhai Hangal ji .. Try them out.. You will have peace😁

Because such music is not very mainstream now, all you hear is electro based no usage of raag. I guess you might not have heard SD Burman's music he used sitar and raag mainly in his compositions.
