Since commencing novel writing last summer, I have listened to dozens of talks on how to do it. Richard Ford’s separates the art of writing from mere vocation. Choosing our character’s qualities and the plot arcs is just the beginning; then comes the hard choices between words.

"Poetry is the last vestige of our childhood; we must go at it irresponsibly." Any idea where Robert Lowell said or wrote this, if he in fact did? I wonder what he meant by the second half of the statement.
