Though no longer with Gibson Guitars, Ren Ferguson is, to say the least, a Master Luthier of world renown. In this video Ren talks in great detail about how the perfect piece of tone wood is selected during the process of building a guitar.

It has been most interesting listening to this man who knows all the aspects of what it takes to produce an instrument that performs at the level we expect. Business, profit, vision, and sensitivity to what players expect has been presented in a way that I can understand and how all of it effects what I am picking. I have had several guitars, presently only two, one built by Taylor, an 810 that is a marvel of presence and tone, I also have a used Guild D25M with a stained sitka spruce top that I bought for less than $700 that is nearly as good as this old (4 digit Serial number Taylor 810) that cost me twice that amount back in 1984. How does one explain this phenomenon, is it just chance or craftsmanship, was it just a good day? Who knows, yet the facts are there this used and inexpensive guitar plays as well as one that is worth several times as much, and this is an exceptionally good Taylor 810, go figure. If one doesn't let his ego get in the way, there are excellent guitars available for reasonable sums that one can have, play, enjoy and show out with that get the job done as well as the most expensive of the big name makers. Part of the picture is the need for a performer to "show out", for acoustic guitar performers that means certain brands, Martin, Taylor, Gibson, and a few other custom builders. If one shows up on a spotlight slot at the Grand Old Oprey with an inexpensive used Guild D25, he won't be shunned, but would cause a raised eyebrow or two. No matter that this particular instrument plays better, or at least as well as the accepted brands do, it just isn't done. Ego and general expectations has more to do in these situations with what one picks than the actual quality of the instrument. As much as possible it will serve one best to put the ego away and ignore expectations when trying to get one's gear and instruments together for a working touring package. Why does one instrument perform head and shoulders above expectations? God only, knows these things.

First off, I want to thank, for the best explanation of how and why acoustic guitar works, second, what a great deal of knowledge about mans use of wood. fantastic! another thing you gave me is pride.I am primarily a Japanese guitar collector. You can thank Guitar Center for that.(long story) but, back what I was saying. You are truly a gifted luthier, an american luthier and enough can't be said. Guitars have been with me all through my life since I was 11 and tried to fix up a guitar that was in pieces, I don't think I have the gift. but it still was able to play it. I just read about you today. It's funny thing is I was on one of my Japanese guitar sites. Your Famous! any way started searching your name. I saw the guitar you made for Johnny Depp. Talk about your ship building, Wow incredible imagination and artistry. No doulbt In history you will be remembered. Well eventually I went to ebay looking for something that you have done for purchase. There are a few things that you have made and signed. Which for me, would be preferable (my time is gonna be shortened and I have two boys got to think about) But this isn't my point. I have found what I believe is seller claiming the guitar is made by you. I am sorry that I don't know enough about your work as yet to know the difference. I asked if he had some evidence. He replied that I should call you, and he said that you would remember the guitar. Well here it is cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=331223143342&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123

'Quarter Sawn' is what Ren Ferguson is describing. You can see parallel lines of grain on flattops because it is quarter sawn and not radial sawn. I don't know about tone and sound but quarter sawn gives the greatest strength and it looks nice.

I appreciate what Ren Ferguson brought back to Gibson, but it would be nice if the guitar was in tune.
