Pokey could’ve been a normal kid if he didn’t go to the Mani Mani statue. The darkness from it completely took over his mind, and from there, nothing could stop him, other than Ness answering that specific question. Pokey just wanted to be a part of the three boys destined from what Buzz Buzz said. And Pokey took that silence as a no, and decided to stand against Ness and his crew. Even after Giygas was defeated, Pokey still wasn’t saved. Going as far as traveling through time, to burn a forest on an island, mechanizing the island’s wildlife which resulted in Hinawa’s death, to finding Lucas’s twin brother that he too was going to mechanize to help Porky pull the seven needles so that everyone who doesn’t like him will be gone It’s hard to believe that this insane series was made by a kid friendly company, that being Nintendo.

I like to think porky is, in spirit, a remnant of giygas. He was never "tamed" during earthbound, so giygas' influence never went away.
