This is the home version of the arcade game that made me great at the arcade game. All the attack patterns are the same and when I went into the arcades after a year of playing the Master system version I became a Space Harrier God and managed to 1cc it. This will always be a part of my gaming history and I have been playing since the 70's and will continue until im a crippled old man that cannot move.

Indeed. As a kid who got asked for and received a SMS for Christmas in '86, when all of his buddies got a NES, I felt like a freaking KING when they'd come over and say how great Space Harrier, Shooting Gallery, Alien Syndrome and Hang-On looked. Of course Phantasy Star came out a year later and it blew everyone out of the water. Without a doubt the superior system, no matter what the sales figures state.

This was my first SMS game. For an 8-bit arcade port, this was an excellent conversion! Back in the day, I discovered an exploit in which if you aimed in the center, just above the horizon and slightly to the left, you can shoot every ground enemy right when they spawn. Also in the bonus round, if you knock down less than 3 trees, a secret jet will appear, worth 10M points if shot down. I love this game so much, almost 40 years later! 29:20 Art Director: FUUUUUK Must have been his reaction upon having to redraw the graphics for the Master System, haha. Going from the super-powered arcade hardware to a machine you wouldn't ever consider making a game like this on must have been something. It's so cute how it uses background tiles for everything [which is why some of the graphics overlap badly -- the SMS only has one background layer, so only the frontmost tile is shown]. And I always loved the little nicknames you'd see in Sega credits of the day [and other companies, but Sega's immediately spring to mind, like at the end of Sonic 1].
