Tobacco cigar making: Curing your own organic cigar from seed to plant.
Master the Art of Tobacco Cigar Making: From Seed to Plant, Grow and Cure Your Own Organic Cigar. Discover the fascinating process of transforming a tiny seed into a fully-grown, organic tobacco plant in this comprehensive video guide. We take you through every step, from harvesting the leaves to creating the perfect curing conditions for optimal drying. While tobacco cultivation conditions may vary depending on your location, we assure you that anyone can cultivate their own tobacco at home and craft it into a flawless, organic cigar or premium rolling tobacco.
Our journey began as a challenge to create a perfect cigar for a friend who had a deep passion for cigars. With limited access to traditional Cuban cigars during the Covid-19 pandemic, we embarked on a fun project to grow tobacco and replicate the qualities of his beloved Cuban cigars. Our goal was to achieve a similar level of quality and ensure that the final product would be distinguishable from a failure.
Little did we anticipate the complexity of this tobacco cigar-making endeavor. Spending days researching on Google and KZfaq, we gathered valuable knowledge and insights on the art of tobacco cultivation. Our video serves as both an inspiration and a practical resource for those who aspire to return to the organic roots of cigar production. We genuinely enjoyed the process of growing and sharing our experiences with you. The results have been immensely promising, bringing us closer to the creation of a truly remarkable organic tobacco cigar.
Learn the secrets of crafting your very own cigar through this comprehensive guide, covering the essential steps of growing and curing your own organic tobacco. Master this age-old art form and indulge in the satisfaction of savoring a cigar made with your own hands
In this video, we show what it takes to take a seed and grow it into a full grown organic tobacco plant. We harvested the leafs and gave it enough time to dry in perfect humid conditions. We share what we learned about curing and fermenting the tobacco leaves. Conditions to grow tobacco might be different from your location, but pretty much everyone can grow their own tobacco at home and convert it into a perfect organic cigar or tobacco ready for rolling.
Our challenge was to make a perfect cigar for our friend who loves cigars. During the Covid 19 there was no access to such things. Mail and airmail were stuck and no more Cuban cigars. So more out of fun we started this little project to grow tobacco in the same way they would do his favorite cigar from Cuba. The target was to deliver equal quality and make this cigar at least good enough to recognize it was not a failure.
Little did we know what we would get into. This tobacco cigar-making was a challenge we did not have knowledge of. So we spend days looking at Google and KZfaq on how to do it. Maybe our video can be an inspiration for all those others trying to get back to organics. We surely enjoyed growing it and sharing it with you. And yes these experiments continue as the results have been very promising in getting close to a decent organic tobacco cigar!

I roll my own as well just came for the explanation on curing + fermenting since I always used to just buy leaves. With rolling I've had good luck with cutting filler leaves in half stacking them on half a leaf used as the binder - rolling Then half a leaf for the wrapper any extra is just cut off I don't fuss with cutting or shaping before that. Much easier much faster and still a darn good cigar Just my method though.

Just out of curiosity, what variety/species of tobacco are you using? I am currently growing Virginia Gold and I've read and have been told Virginia Gold are not cigar worthy tobacco. Great video btw.

Thanks for your comment. The first time I used Virginia Gold from my own homegrown as seen in the video, and it was a great quality with a nice burn. Then I started buying Virginia Gold from local farmers here in Thailand. They normally sell it to international tobacco producers. In the 2 times that I bought from farmers, the taste/quality was good too, but the cigars from this would not burn as smoothly as the first ones I made. I think this might have been because of a shorter drying/curing process (40 Days) compared to my own homegrown (90 days). But besides that I can't say Virginia Gold is not suitable for cigars, on the contrary. My cigar loving friends all said that my cigar could be compared to Cuban quality. That might be too much credit for me, but I do think you can make a huge difference in being patience with the curing process. I spray the leaves with sugar-tea or sugar/coffee water once every 10 days and maintain a moisture level 90 days.

@@LiveinChiangMai wow, thank you for your input, as you recomended I'll be patient with the process... they are still in seedling cups, but with 2 to 3 inches in diameter (leaves are getting huge day by day) I will be transplanting them in my back yard.... I do hope for a great yield and thank you again so so much for the reply. Love the video and I'll let you know my results.

Actually the curing of tobacco is the slow drying process and you just need a bit of space for that. Preferably it is a room with enough moisture and a bit of airflow. But you can also use a fan if you need to. Curing can be done this way over time, or you can add some slow burning wood in the room a few times to smoke the leaves a bit. This process is used to make i.e. pipe tobacco. Another way would be to add other flavors in the water mixture (some containing sugar) and do the same. But in general you could do this in a small room or garage. When the air is too dry I usually spray the leafs with water once a week during the 60 day drying process. The trick is to not let the leaves dry out too quickly so the taste improves. But do remember to let them dry long enough to release most of the toxic residues that are naturally in young leaves. Fermenting is another process after the curing, but is is actually only used in a few tobacco mixes and mostly to add extra flavor. In that case some fruits are used to initiate the fermentation. I only do the normal process of drying without using any chemicals or even sugar. Only sometimes smoking with mango wood leftovers. Try it out, you can do it in a small scale setup too by using a carton box to dry the leaves.

@@LiveinChiangMai So my plan is to set up a string with home grown tobacco in my basement, I haven't got any sockets down there so I can't put a fan or stuff in there but the basement is still relatively big so air can circulate but it isn't plastered so i may be worried for mold. I like the idea of adding sugar to the water and spraying that for the curing with the tobacco. If I understand by your response, I can ferment the tobacco on the line after the drying phase by spraying it with a water solution once its dry.

@LiveinChiangMai 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a great plan and I think a basement will do. Indeed you have to watch out for mold and the level of moisture, but depending the season in your place it will work fine. I am looking to try curing with rum as I was reading about this method recently. Good luck and let us know your results one day? Always good to share and learn!

You don't need to cut the stem 😂

Thank you for your comment. My first batch of home grown tobacco had such small leaves that I had to cut the stem out otherwise I really had too much stems to make a nice tasting cigar. But indeed I agree there is no need to cut them out in general. Now I started ordering from local farmers and have better results without cutting the stem.

Unnecessarily complicated way to make a "cigar" Just use whole leaves for the binders and wrappers instead of fiddling around with those small torn up leaves.

As it was my first home grown tobacco I didn't have a lot of large leaves so I used smaller ones for the outer layers, and a larger one to finish.

Why would you cut the veins within the leaves lamina though? That’s strange and unnecessary. You had a big enough leaf to roll the filler with a binder and wrapper.

@LiveinChiangMai
@LiveinChiangMai 3 жыл бұрын
It is not presented as a premium and actually the 1st cigar I ever made myself. With this little project we wanted to see if we could please an experienced cigar fanatic with the quality of our own grown tobacco. Our dear friend indeed confirmed the cigar had a great taste and it didn't take too much work to keep it burning. I won't be making much more myself other than occasionally. It was an experiment without any commercial intention. But we are passing it to local farmers here so they can hopefully get to a premium, alternative extra. My interest was and still is to learn about the process of fermentation and curing of organic tobacco.
