hello i am a french painter and i use gesso for different sort of surface like canvas but also on cardboard. I am totally agree with the process. I use a lacquer roller stretched to spread the paint. You have a surface very smooth with a roller. To the end i will give you a trick (astuce in french). At the end when the gesso is dry just after you can wet the entire surface and then sand with a paper to sand wet surfaces. this paper is used to sand car bodywork. we obtain on the surface like a cream and by sanding slowly we obtain a surface as smooth as skin. There is no longer any grain on the canvas the surface is as smooth as skin you can use the palm of your hand to complete the smoothing Test and you will really appreciate the result. I hope you enjoy this trick. 😘

These are my go to canvasses, I've been known to put a a dozen thin coats on. I alternate between grey and white gesso. I must admit I have never thought of using a decorators sponge, off to Amazon to get some. Great video thank you.....

Hi Angie. Yes very easily. If you use oil or acrylic you don’t need to use glass (the painting looks better if you don’t) so if you use a standard size canvas eg 12x16 you can buy any readymade frame from a hardware store in that size. Remove the glass. Pop the board in and replace the backing panel. That way you can buy quite cheap frames too. Hope this helps.

Maz does the art paint not end up mixing in with the Gesso?? thank you Lynda

Hi Lynda. I’m not sure what you mean with this question “art paint”? The gesso is completely dry before I paint on the top and I typically leave it at least a week before painting on top. So nothing can mix with the gesso it simply serves as a smoother ground for painting. Hope this helps hun.
