In this GIMP 2.10 tutorial, I show you how to master the popular and versatile Paths Tool (which is equivalent to the Pen Tool in Photoshop). From cutting out complex objects to creating curves and shapes, there are tons of cool features that come with this tool. You can create selections from paths, stroke a path, and fill a path, plus re-use paths and bring them into other compositions by copying or exporting them.
This is a great features overview tutorial for beginners wanting to learn how to use the tools in GIMP.

Thank you for putting these tuts up...I appreciate them & no doubt a great many others do also. Yes, I am a former Photoshop user...started messing with it back in the 90's, when you could buy the _program_ & it didn't cost an arm & a leg. I got to maybe journeyman capability...mid-level. I was beyond the basics but no guru (tended to have problems using masks, though). We all know what happened when Adobe got too big for its britches... Finally they switched to that obscene subscription model. Had been doing basic stuff with GIMP for almost a year since my last computer with a ghetto copy of Creative Suite died (yes, I admit it. Don't tell me everyone has shelled out thousand$ for programs with ridiculously bloated code). Once Adobe rolled out that subscription bullshit I said enough was enough. Got a new machine late last year & was happy to see how GIMP has evolved.

I need some help. I just started using GIMP. I'm creating images for a pitch deck. I have about 11 layers going on, as I'm creating a mock film poster. I started to notice, yellow-ish lines, appearing in the project. They are clearly from where I have taken a photo, dropped it into Gimp (a layer) and created a path around an object (like an actress), shrunk them down to place them in the image to create the look I am after. It looks as though the initial outline (prior to shrinking the image) still remains, in faded form in the project. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? CAN ANYONE HELP ME FIGURE OUT HOW TO REMOVE THEM? As they are clearly ruining the overall image I am building. Thank you! Simon

Couldn't find my question on google so thought I'd ask on this video that has been helpful to me. For some reason when I paste my path on an image, it doesn't show the path outline at all. The path appears in the path dialog box but as a blank white box. When I paste this path onto other images I don't have this problem. Does anyone know what might be the issue here?

My favorite way yo outline a subject with paths is to free select the object and turn it into a path. Another easy way imo is to make a layer mask and paint out everything outside of the object, then color select the full opacity part of the mask and turn that selection into a path.

I'm a geography teacher and I want to recreate a map of my country Panama about the incursion of the real pirates of the Caribbean and I want to do it in the old style. @vshazam

I know this is way old by now, but in case anyone is wondering in the future - yes, there is. I'm not sure where it is in any drop down menus, but I have a custom shortcut set for it. In the Configure Keyboard Shortcuts it's named vector-stroke-last-value. Ihave mine set for Ctrl+Alt+R, so if I stroke a path with the ink tool, it'll do the same every time I hit Ctrl+Alt+R. It'll repeat whichever Tool you last used. Ink, Pencil, Paintbrush, Eraser, Air Brush, etc or just the Stroke Line option in Stroke Path. It doesn't necessarily repeat the same brush settings under Tool Options (like opacity, size, angle, etc) but as long as you don't change them they'll stay the same. Which I personally prefer, it's handy for quickly honing in on the perfect Tool Option settings for the project I'm working on. I just use Ctrl-Alt-R and Ctrl+Z and adjust the settings in between.

Davies great video and excellent tutorial, quick question, after creating the path can it be sliced half way through the line? for example, if I draw one straight line with a node on each end, can i click on the middle of the path and cut it in half? or for example can I delete a line between two nodes? thanks in advance
@DaviesMediaDesign
@DaviesMediaDesign 5 жыл бұрын
Any time you delete a node in GIMP, it will simply connect the remaining nodes together with a new line segment. It will not cut the node in half. However, when drawing nodes, you can hold the shift key and click to create a break in the path between the last node you drew and a new node. But you cannot do this after you have already drawn the path. You could always create a selection from your path, and draw a new selection (using something like the Free Select Tool) in "subtract from current selection" mode, then create a new path from that selection. The path would then be sliced wherever you subtracted the selection. I hope that makes sense.
