Thank you! This helped a lot. One of my songs had a very low overall volume. And I was trying to figure how make it slightly louder, but I didn’t feel like turning every single individual track up (I had 20 tracks). This tutorial helped a ton!

I put my first single out on Spotify and it’s frustratingly quiet compared to other tracks and it was driving me nuts. Amazing. Thanks. Now my next release will actually be as loud as other tracks on playlists and things.

Thanks very helpful. Only thing is there's no meter for this master track. seems there's no way to see at what point the volume starts clipping.

True. GarageBand will limit the volume and help you avoid clipping but metering would be good. I just tend to keep things low and then bump yo the levels in mastering.

Awesome! So, if I understand correctly, then this could be used for individual tracks as well so you could automate volume changes in real-time, or slower for better precision, with the whole song playing - that’s priceless compared to the GB ‘automaton’ feature. Nice one, yet again Pete, you really know this App - I’m guessing because you’ve used it for years and overcome many of the shortfalls yourself. Cheers pal - where’s your Xmas hat? Surely you’ve got a special holiday hat? A tweed fedora with a feather in it, or mince pies. Make a hat from cake, that’s festive. I’m not far from having to use plastic cutlery I reckon, this is what happens when you retire at 50 to be a stay-at-home Dad to a 5yr old minx and her 1yr old brother - with wife number 3 and 7 kids in total, one of each (Lazy sod, witless moron, paramedic, blah blah), and a par-tridge in a big oven...

Quite the menagerie you have going on there! Alas, this only works for static volume so you can use it on an individual yes if and it is handy, but not as handy as you may hope.

Thx, Pete! By the way: you don‘t even need to record anything onto FX-track. Just clicking the FX and afterwards the mixer-icon gives direct access to the ‚master‘-eq. A little time saved. 🤓

Unfortunately not. It only works for volume. But what you can do is merge your tracks or export as a stereo WAV and then master in GarageBand on a single stereo track. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r62Ei9mhyrauf30.html

Great for me that you went over this again but that reminds me of a question. How does the master volume affect the normalization/compression that happens when a song is placed into say iTunes for example? Does the song become too compressed? I guess that is true for volume in general too. I thought also that the iPad volume at the top of GarageBand was an indication that tracks needed to adjusted down one if that top level volume indicator was clipping in the red. Sorry for my confusion. Thanks Pete.

Lots of good questions here my friend. Yes, if the meters are hitting the red regularly you should be turning things down. The auto-normalisation can actually be helped by turning the volume done here before exporting from GarageBand for mastering, as while it still pushes up to 0dB, it creates a little more audio at lower volume levels so when the mix is reduced before mastering, there is a little headroom.

@@PeteJohnsMusic I wanna ask a question that pertains to the discussion... are you saying lower all tracks volume down individually a subtle amount (enough for the headroom you need for a good master after the mix) ? Specifically I want to know what DB to subtract for the MP3 beats that I drag in. And just so we’re clear is it all tracks in your song or is this only for instruments. The only reason I ask is because I get hella good levels on my vocals and it’s hard to subtract down with an exact number because it’s a touch screen and I’m hoping you say this is mainly for instruments if someone is making a beat.... anyway thank you. I love ur page man.

A quick question: how do we know, since we don't have a MASTER track, if the volume of the song exceeds 0dbfs? and so, where can we see this overall volume level in garage band ios to verify that it does not exceed 0dbfs? Thanks Pete for that interesting tip. I tried FX volume level increase, and discovered that although all individual tracks were increased in volume, the individual instrument track volume green moving level indicators did NOT change at all. Thus, for example, no red clipping levels would show despite massive increase in FX volume level. I, therefore fear that using this FX volume trick may prevent me from knowing whether any of my individual tracks are too loud and will clip. Am I missing something? Hey Gerry. Yes, a very good point. I tend to use this hack more to reduce volume than increase because you are right than you could overdo the increase and start getting some pumping or even distortion and clipping if you increase too much. I probably should have pointed this out but was very keen to keep the video as short as possible.

Yes, Australia and California are very similar climate wise and I know you have a lot of bushfires (wildfires) there as well. It is out bushfire season but this year it’s early and it’s a lot more intense than usual.

Hi Pete, is there a suggested “neutral” volume setting to use while comparing on different speakers? It’s confusing using GarageBand’s volume, my phones volume, the car volume when listening to my playbacks. Does that make sense? Thanks yet again for your help.

Yeah, it can be hard with so many different sources to balance your listening volume and there’s no real standard as such, as all equipment is different. I tend to listen at a low, medium and loud volume on each device and take separate notes at each if I have the time.

Could you set the gain on fx and EQ then record and at the end drop the gain and use it as a fade out, rather then automate the volume of each track?

H there my friend. Unfortunately there is no way to automate the FX track. I would suggest actually exporting the final mix to a stereo track and then fading out this using automation instead. Check out this video for more info - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r62Ei9mhyrauf30.html

Loudness does bring out a lot more bass. Different frequencies respond differently at different volumes. It’s why mixing quietly am be good as you’ll hear of your bass is overdone.

You know what are the requirements of distrokid to uploud a song? For example the quality of the audio, and those things?

Hey there. It’s quite lenient, it in short you’ll need at least a 44.1kHz, 16-bit WAV file. I would always go 24-bit if you can. And I would also make the album art 3000x3000 pixels and keep things nice and clear/crispy as a lot of songs are rejected due to album art.
