There have been some bad Assassins throughout the different eras of Assassin's Creed. But little are as selfish, greedy, and idiotic as Duncan Walpole from Assassin's Creed Black Flags Prologue. In this video I cover the life of Duncan Walpole, what drove him to betray the assassins, and why I believe he is the worst master assassin in Assassin's Creed...

A small DLC mission where you get to see Duncan and his early life might be an interesting idea but how would you market it? 5:45 I AM NOT DEFENDING DUNCAN! I am only trying to educate you on the subject of flintlocks. The other flintlock on Duncan wouldn't had worked either as the problem was that the gunpowder in both of them was wet, and therefor couldn't ignite properly (the first flintlock wasn't broken at all). He was later able to shoot him because the gunpowder would've been able to dry itself just enough to catch a spark and ignite, and Duncan tried his luck. Also, because you said that Duncan missed, I remind you that flintlocks, because of their tehnology, or rather the lack of it (messy "cartridges" and smooth bore barrels) are VERY inaccurate (in the game, we're so good at shooting with them just because game mechanics and all that to make it more enjoyable and epic). I think Captain Chevalier de la Vérendrye from Rogue is up there as well. He got stomped by Shay, who’d only been in the assassins for a little while, if I remember right. Yet the Captain was a veteran of the seven years war and had decades more experience than Shay. He left his ship, (a man o war,) where it could be easily taken out and it couldn’t save itself, whereas a much smaller and barely outfitted ship did. Plus he was arrogant as all hell and remained as such to Shay, even after having his ass handed to him. And like the other assassins, refused to consider that their mentor’s repeatedly sending them off to retrieve the precursor artefacts was leading to potentially millions of innocents dying. Plus he shot Shay in the back like a coward, when none of the other blind to the truth assassins did so.

It is mentioned throughout the whole game how talented Edward is, not only his physical skills, but also his 6th sense (the ISU sense/Eagle Vision) is insanely strong since he ''had it since he was a lad''. Additionally Edwardd seems to be really intelligent. Furthermore, the whole Kenway lineage seems to be insanely talented. Edward, Haytham and Connor all seem to have insane talent in combat and other physical traits, problem solving and ambition.

Definitely agree with this. But also think Duncan Walpole is an honorable mention. The one and only time his character ever makes an appearance, he gets killed by a pirate who steals his identity. Not very assassin like

I never gave Duncan Walpole much thought/consideration until this video. I just seen him as a plot device to move the game forward. Maybe it would have been a better idea if he was written in a way where he wasn't a master assassin, and this was some kind of proving mission for him to be promoted or ranked up or something if he could complete this assignment.

In defense of Walpole, even though its entirely hypothetical, he could've been the type to stay stealthy rather than all out combat like how Basim is pushed to do in Mirage. Also, though maybe guns didn't work like this, he could've went to clean or dry the other gun he jad before using it.

To clear up a little mistake you made the reasoning behind he didn't use his second pistol was because the gun powder in it would of been wet which is why the 1st one didn't work and why it his 2nd one is able to used later on as probably enough time would of passed for the gun powder to dry back up and the reason he was probably unable to kill edward with it too as probably wasn't able to fast enough from the gun powder being wet

Just goes to show that theres a chance the assassins back in those days were more about quantity and not quality. I mean just look at that mission later in the game where edward had to sneak around that whole island to find Kidd. Those were supposed trained assassons, yet a pirate with no quantifiable skill as an assassin sneaks by them and easily. Duncan was just one of the many in the order from an outside perspective point of view that was completely incompetent

eh Shay's turn was more because of stupidity and hot headedness. he only tried once to tell the Assassin's about the danger of the manuscript, and he did so while screaming like a madman and elaborating on nothing. did he calm down and come back later? no. as far as i'm concerned Shay might be a bit more righteous in his turn, but he's dumb as a brick. he had options. chalk it up to bad writing.
@alexanderchristopher6237
@alexanderchristopher6237 Ай бұрын
I mean, he may go about it in the worst case possible (given that he had just witnessed the destruction of Lisbon), but even he initially wanted to just take away the manuscript away and hid it. He didn’t even join the Templars until much later when he had witnessed the depraved levels in which the Assassins had gone to. Monroe and others didn’t reveal their Templar affiliations or even reveal the Manuscript they had taken from Shay until Shay had seen how the Assassins were behind the gangsters terrorizing New York and made up his mind on actually fighting the Assassins.
@musicalDrebin

@@alexanderchristopher6237 well that's just my point. bad writing. he hadn't just seen Lisbon destroyed. it took six months or more to cross the atlantic. he had more than half a year to cool his jets and think about it, yet he acts like he just got off a four hour flight. and the assassin gangs terrorizing things is just pure character assassination, no pun intended. all this stuff blatantly defies the creed and it's never revealed until after Shay leaves. and again he could have talked reasonably to Achillies and they could have worked something out instead he chose the most bone headed path. it's just very contrived writing

I remember I was playing the AC most praised games for the first time, and Black Flag was essentially my 4th after Ezio trilogy, and after 3 games of being the scary, intimidating ghost tale, you kind of forget how scary assassins are supposed to be to others? At least I forgot. And then opening to Black Flag. There is this assassin staring at me, with his hood on, unbothered by the storm. And I'm thinking, "I have plot armor, no way will I die in first mission, BUT WHY ARE THEY SICKING AN ASSASSIN ON ME???", all for the guy to die in 10mins. Like yeah, it's the beginning, but that's just embarassing my guy.

I’d argue Duncan gets unnecessary hate. Yes he gets absolutely bodied, but if you take Edward out of the equation you potentially have one of the most influential assassins in all of the series. Imagine if Duncan had successfully defected, and given the Templars both the observatory and the sage. Leading the templars to completely destroy the assassins in the West Indies, and potentially even farther afield. And the only reason that he doesn’t succeed in this is because he meets Edward fucking Kenway. Who is ACTUALLY one of the most influential assassins in all of history. Almost single-handedly wiping out the Templars in the West Indies and the Americas. You can almost argue that Kenway killing Duncan was the most historically significant assassination in the entire series. I don’t fault Micheal Jordan for getting swept by Larry Bird, and I don’t fault Duncan for falling to the man who would become one of the most powerful and influential assassins ever. It honestly has nothing to do with training. (It’s also kinda obvious to me that you’re going to body him when he’s the first enemy you fight in the whole game). He also only fights you because he’s cornered, and AFTER trying very hard to run away. (Compare him running to Charles Vaine later in the game and I think the difference between an assassin and a non-assassin is obvious) Duncan’s death has always more highlights Edward’s prowess than Duncan’s “lack of” for me. Edit: If that’s not enough, consider the fact that if Dencan had killed Edward, then NONE of the Kenways would have been born. The second most influential family in the entire Assassin Templar conflict, gone. No Haytham, No Connor. Just imagine what that would have done to the world… And his [Duncan’s] second pistol likely only worked because he had given it time to dry out before shooting it. I think it speaks to his intelligence that after attempting to shoot Edward, after he realized he was a threat, and the pistol was non-functioning he tried to escape. I think that’s the smartest next move. And considering that they both barely survived that shipwreck, I think he was rather calm and decisive where most might not be. That also speaks to his assassin training.

To be fair, the Colonial assassins probably struggled to get anyone of use, so for whomever they could, trained whomever could handle it, and ranked whomever was at least somewhat competent. The rank of “master” for that brotherhood is probably akin to being a top ranked cop vs a top ranked marine.

Okay, I do not believe Lucy was a Templar. I think that was a lie told by Abstergo, the gods, Ubisoft or all three. Grand Templar Gru's Master Plan. Step 1, Capture Desmond, the KEY to everything you wish to do. Step 2, Tell the Assassins who previously had no idea he was even in danger where he is being held. Step 3, Stage a rescue and hand the KEY TO EVEYTHING back to the Assassins but keep tabs on him with your double agent. Step 4, -Teach Desmond how to use Eagle Vision so he can tell friends from foes at a glance and risk discovering the double agent.- Step 4, Teach Desmond how to kill people with expert proficiency. Step 5, Stage an attack on the Assassin hideout when they're close to finding the thing you're looking for, for some reason. Step 6, Give Desmon a deadly weapon and kill your minimum wage employees and hope to God he doesn't kill your middle management man. Step 7, Lucy dies.
