I purchased an aftermarket grate. The openings were narrower and had a fan protector. It was a complete fail. The grill wouldn’t get up to temp. The other issue is if you like to throw chunk wood like applewood, cherry etc it wouldn’t allow any small pieces of charcoal to fall through to ignite enough to cause smoke. Switched back to the grate that came with the 1050 and it works flawlessly.

Masterbuilt has since changed the design of this grate to catch more fuel.
@emericanchaos

Just a couple thoughts. I think the spacing on the grates could be set wider so that the coals drop before too much ash builds up. If they get too ashed over the fan will pull ash up into the food or at least into the fan. Second, it seems to be a more common practice to add wood chunks into your ash bin to get a good wood smoke going. Slowing the addition of coal into the ash bin could make that technique less effective.
@randomjoe7646
@randomjoe7646 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't had a problem with ash in food and the newer grate does tighten the spacing a bit. You are correct about the wood chunks and the coals dropping on them but you can effectively customize this by having as many in as you want. I generally always have 2 in but bump it up to 4 for longer low and slow cooks but everyone has their own preference. With just 2, I can easily get higher temps. With 4, it has a tough time getting up to that high searing range.

This is an old issue now. I hope those who might be interested in this grill but might think otherwise due to this video see this. Masterbuilt revised the charcoal grate. It works amazingly now, and I can get nearly 10 hours of smoking at 225 with a 16 lb bag of briquettes

I've also done this mod. Prior to the mod I would have lots of unburnt briquettes. Afterwards I don't have hardly any at all. Only downside is if u like to put wood chunks in the ash bin, for additional smoke. Not enough lit briquettes will fall through to get the chunk smoking. Because of this I usually just mix chunks with the briquettes in the chute.
@randomjoe7646
@randomjoe7646 4 жыл бұрын
Good call out. You could get around it by sliding 1 or 2 skewers to the side to allow larger pieces to fall through and light the chunks but mixing them into the fuel is something I've seen quite a few people doing. BTW, I'm a Chiefs fan, your team is darn good and I wouldn't be surprised to see us face off in the Superbowl again.

Tip or Suggestion: You possibly won’t have a need for this mod if using B&B Charcoal Briquettes IMO. I want to stress too that it’s just my opinion. I’m not saying my opinion is right or will work for you. It just worked out this way for me. If your charcoal of choice is KINGSFORD then I would consider/recommend this skewer-mod, but also remember Masterbuilt placed those slots there for a reason on that charcoal catch tray. With this mod in essence what you’re doing is not letting those ashed up briquettes fall down into the hopper which in some instances will hurt your smoke output inside the grill and possibly mess with your grill temperature. At most I would try 2 of them and see how you like it. In my instance, I tried it with 2 skewers first with B&B (I also add wood chunks) but this prevented a good even smoke throughout my cook. I also noticed that my different installed temp probe on the front, was suddenly way off from the digital display temp reading. I took the skewers out about midway into the cook and my temp gauge then slowly crept up to very close to my digital temp display. Note: As indicated above, I changed out (mod) the temp gauge probe on the front of the grill so I could see true temps towards the front middle of the grill instead of the included cheap looking Masterbuilt stock temp gauge. I had been using the new temp probe/gauge many times before this skewer mod and both temp readings (digital display & temp gauge/probe) always seemed within 5 to 15-degrees. I tried the 2-skewer mod with KINGSFORD as well and the same thing happened to me and it was even worse but I think that’s due to the fact that Kingsford has been proven not to hold temp anywhere near as long as B&B. ** I also have the SS Firebox Mod on my grill **
@randomjoe7646
@randomjoe7646 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I do adjust between 2 and 4 based on how I'm cooking. If I want high temp, I go down to 2. If I'm looking for temps 400 and lower, I've been good with 4. That is generally with B&B Lump. I did some briquette tests and they do tend to get to full ash easier.
@RossMalagarie

hears an idea, after a cook save the ashes, and pour them over the new charcoal, that way any ash will fall back down, and any bigger pieces will get caught on the new charcoal and get burned the second time.

Hi we just purchased the same grill. When you smoke does smoke come out the lid of the coal hopper when smoking. Smoke is leaking out the seal. Does yours do the same. Thank you. Great video 👍. Going to put the skewers in ours as well 👍
@randomjoe7646
@randomjoe7646 2 жыл бұрын
No, but mine seals really well thankfully. I know a lot of other people have had that happen. If it's only a small amount it's not a big deal but the more you have, the more it's directing heat and smoke where it shouldn't be and you'll also have more charcoal getting lit further up the hopper. It's worth keeping an eye on.

Thanks for the video. Do you find that your lit charcoal creeps further up the stack above the firebox since coal isn't falling through the grate until it's much smaller in size? I'm curious if you notice more lit coals well above the firebox given that the coal on the bottom takes longer to fall through now. I'd hate to have issues in the stack above the firebox as I don't think it was meant to have lit coals higher up in the stack. Thank you.
@randomjoe7646
@randomjoe7646 3 жыл бұрын
No, It doesn't seem to go any higher at all. The only change I see is the with the small pieces taking longer to fall through the air flow isn't as good so you can't always reach the higher temperatures. I actually think my box is in better shape than most with the grill, at least most without the stainless steel firebox mod that's out there. The only issue I really see with the box is with moisture slowly building because of the solid top seal.

I just saw this grill, new and assembled, at a local Walmart. It is in their clearance section and I'm more than tempted to get it. I've mostly been cooking on a Weber kettle. How is the 560 as far as fuel consumption goes? Should I anticipate spending more on fuel than I do with the kettle? Thanks... Very helpful video!
@randomjoe7646
@randomjoe7646 3 жыл бұрын
I probably have to let others advise on fuel consumption vs. kettle specifically but one thing I like on this is that when you are done, the slides choke out the coals so you can use the remaining fuel again. There is a fan to supply oxygen and when you get it up to 700 degrees, you'll use some fuel. They claim the hopper holds 10 lbs. of lump charcoal or 16 lbs. of briquettes for up to 8 hours of use, I believe they claim 10 hours on the 560 with same size hopper(just less cooking area to heat so you get more time). In my experience that's pretty accurate for low and slow. In my opinion this mod extends that a bit but I haven't done specific time trials, etc. because I do a pretty good mix of slow cooking vs burgers, etc.
@manfromearth
@manfromearth 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I am really lucky to have gotten this grill assembled for $252. I've got a mini Green egg that is great on fuel consumption and a Weber kettle, so now my arsenal is complete. I'm really stoked about the 560 with all it's cooking area. Can't wait to season it and incorporate your nifty skewer mod. Thanks again for your reply and vid. Subbed!

No doubt! So have you done any other mods to your 1050 or did you just go for it? The mod that protects the firebox looks worthwhile, then again MB says the breakdown of the metal enclosing the bricks in the firebox is normal. Also, I'll probably get a cover, although I'm ok with just putting a tarp on it. Mine is under a lean-to, as well.
