Incredibly insightful! There is so much natural resonance and contrast that comes directly from what is written on the score. I often make the mistake of becoming too "inventive" too soon and "bending" the text as Barenboim mentioned before truly exploring the vast range of character that can come from just the harmonic, rhythmic and dynamic structures alone. Before I begin having thoughts to go against what is written I must truly understand the extremities of what can be done with the written score first. This will help me to understand my intentions and how to express them without "rewriting" the music. This way, my interpretations can achieve both the necessary authentic feel of the piece as well as whatever desired character I aim to portray. The intentions of the composer are equally as important as the performer, and they must be understood to the fullest. Thank you for posting this amazing masterclass!

I thought the performer should fully understand and then serve the composer and his composition?! It's ALL about what the composer want's to tell us, about HIS story, isn't it???

I've watched Maestro Barenboim for many years, Master Classes, forming his orchestra of musicians from the Middle East, conducting orchestras all over the world, recording his Five Minutes on musical terms, and on & on. He will be 80 this summer. Some orchestra members are accusing him of "being a bully". There are a number of Orchestra Practice sessions you can watch on YT. Demanding yes but bullying? Some day they will brag about working w/ Maestro Barenboim!

Faces are for feelings. When you play with an open mouth, you also sing to yourself. In any case, practice over five hours a day, prepare for concerts, play for the audience and acquire an utter discipline to not screw up anything. Takes a lot of effort. Hands can't shakes, fingers can't shake, can't lose the rhythm and get too emotional. But at the end, combination of everything makes it all worth the effort. Perfection is everything.

How true. I finally realized just how vulgar most of the repertoire is. All the real musical value of a Twinkie. Give me Schubert or Haydn or Bach, Sibelius...
@emanuel_soundtrack
@emanuel_soundtrack 3 жыл бұрын
@@floxy20 most of the repertoire is choosen by the principle of lazyness, cowardice, or narcisismus. People play Mendelssohns violin concerto not exactly because it is beautiful or to comunicates his ideas,but because they know it will work somehow. The point is that there is a lot of knowledge about how to play it, and the students will of course learn it. But then it comes that it will be by default their repertoire even when the concert is too much for them or if the public is already sick of it. This happens with many pieces of good classicals composers that are indeed not that great pieces to hear ANYMORE. The Hamelin is an exception, he truly wanted to communicate what composers did best, not only what good composers did. One just need to think about the meaning of presenting Beethoven in 2020 for the XYZ time in public trying to imitate the own teacher, without being any true personality, when there is already a lot of better performances done and many other composers waiting to be promoted by these - most of the time- narcisist pianists, who think to high of themselves after just have being obedient for so much time. Most of the times the audience can just focus on the pianist to see" if maybe this one plays it as I want to hear it" , the focus comes more to the pianist than to the composer and in this aspect I think it is like a sport where people only have to win or to loose.
