In this episode of Mastering Diagnostics, Motor Age Technical Editor Brandon Steckler is back in the second video of his mini-series, “Learning how to learn.” This time Brandon captures the story to be told about the fuel injection system.
Implementing a Pico 4-trace lab scope and amp probe, Brandon captures the signal from the crankshaft position sensor, the command to the fuel injector, and the current (amperage) for all four fuel injectors. Stick with Brandon as he discusses not only how to capture the data but also how to perform the necessary research to build anticipation of the waveform to be captured.
Witness what happens “LIVE” as a real-world wring fault is introduced to the PCM's input (the CKP signal) and how it responds in the output (the fuel injector control). Follow along as Brandon takes the time to analyze the data with you. This “Action/Reaction” type testing is what Brandon has been implementing for most of his career and directly correlates to the success he has realized in the trenches.

I don't always get a chance to see your presentations as they're released but when I do see them they are very well organized and informative especially for those that do not have any experience you are doing a fantastic job of describing circuitry

🗣circuit comprehension before circuit evaluation all new students should have to explain the circuit and how it works before they are allowed to probe it 🎓👍♦️great video

Thanks! My thoughts exactly. If we spend a little more time in the classroom, analyzing data the students will not only get comfortable, it’s a very fun exercise and they will be enthusiastic about it. #GrowOurOwn

You got it! Knowledge is power. If we take the tome to understand, possess the correct tooling and reference the proper service information, everything else seems to fall into place.

Begin with the basics: Learning about ohms law, and Howard defines that voltage, current flow and resistance all relate to one another. This will allow you to learn other important facts. Learning how individual components operate at the most basic level, and then together as a system, will carry you far, regardless of what you make or model vehicle use you are working on.

Great video. A bit of a newbie question but why would the different injector pulse spikes not be the same heights ?
@brandonsteckler3417
@brandonsteckler3417 3 ай бұрын
That’s a fantastic question. If you are referring to the YELLOW current ramps, they vary in amplitude because of other components’ current being measured at the same time

Thank you Brendon. So, just wondered that not just CKP but other sensors' signal probing can be grounded just as you did without hurting the grounded sensor?
@brandonsteckler3417
@brandonsteckler3417 3 ай бұрын
Correct! There is very little current flow, and resistance is engineered into the signal detection circuitry.
