Kevin's mastering is second to none. From Fleetwood Mac Rumours (pressed at Pallas) reissue to the Blue Note Tone Poet series, his analogue sourced mastering makes it worth buying the reissues. He has done countless reissues and they are all the reference version of the release . It's interesting to see what he says about half speed mastering. The effect on the cutting of the vinyl being a negative makes you wonder whether to buy half speed masters. I would love to see Kevin work on some of the early to mid 80's Virgin Records releases by bands like Japan, Simple Minds and more. I gotta, Andrew Hill's Black Fire - Blue Note Tone Poet is stunning. This is one of those Kevin Gray masters in the last while that really stands out for me. You get that full sound stage with front to back dispersion/imaging, the detail in the drum high hat and cymbols (drums overall really) is stunning. This also happens to be a great record as well. I recently picked up Jimmy Smith's Bashin on an orig Verve (Quality Records CAnada) -not QR Accoustic Sounds release but the original. This is another great sounding jazz record and if you can't have the original, the all analogue Kevin Gray reissues are the way to go. The packaging often exceeds the original actually and I have had good luck with RTI so far but I realize that Opitcal (Germany) is a notch better overall. I bought my Beatles Mono vinyl individually when they first came out, all except 3 titles, all Optical, perfect pressings

The John Prine Atlantic reissues are fantastic. Basically exact replicas of the originals as in packaging and KG for 20 something dollars. It's a steal.

How do you deal with the inherent compression of vinyl? It is perhaps the most flawed of all the major formats. Reel to reel is far better than vinyl.

definitively a strange affirmation, specially for a vinyl maker i again today compared the orginal master tape i did from my composition to it's digital capture over sampled to dsd 512. ()i wanted to listen again the song and haven't cleaned the deck so switched to digital There's isn't any common! Bass are flat and soft, the mid presence definitively gone and grainy, the high definitively too strong, too much distortion, and sharp, and i just used 7.5ips 2 tracks, the reel blown the digital capture making it just a bargain one! So excuse me but i could not handle someone telling that a 30IPS reel can sound less good that a digital file! Hope the digital will soon be trashed by any professional maker! I event wasn't able to retrieve the sound correction i add intention to do to the song when listening to the digital, even for mastering it's a crap! All the details i heard and wanted to modify weren't anymore present on the digital! Anyway looking at the video date and knowing what you are doing now i would assume that it was a mistake of youth!
