I still aim for pretty loud RMS levels due to the sound of popular music currently. Usually can push to -5 RMS before it sounds extremely limited but it takes prep work to get a track that loud .. -6 to - 8 RMS sounds really current, every major artists music is pushed at least that loud and it creates a sound that most listeners are used too. If you don’t like the commercial sound, then use the levels you want for mastering!

Finally a video where the author doesn't interchangeably use the words normalization and compression for the youtube sound reduction as if they're the same thing when they're so drastically not. I've heard so many people talk about youtube "compressing" your master to -14 LUFS and you scratch your head and say "why not just normalize it?" Thank goodness that's the answer.

Another trick to fix this problem is open the console in the browser on a KZfaq Video and copy the code: document.getElementsByClassName("html5-main-video")[0].volume = 1 when you press enter the volume should be louder. Sometimes it cuts off and you have to enter the code again...

I was hearing a song a made with this technique and the Stats for nerds shows me that the loudness is 0.7dB. That's good right? But was hearing the song on my iPhone with a Bluetooth earphones and had to pump up the volume to the max, then I heard another song and was loud so I had to reduce the volume. That's weird, so I came to the my computer and checked the loudness on KZfaq's website. My video is 0.7dB and the other one is 9.6dB. On the computer both sound about the same loudness, but not on the phone. Hmmmm, maybe the loudness is no implemented on phones? (in this case is the KZfaq app). Guess I'll back doing my song as loud as possible as in the 90's. Let me know if you experienced the same. Cheers.

Hey Bobby, it's not necessary to create different versions - the normalization is for playback consistency for listeners (not delivery). You can deliver a competitive master that sounds great at any level and the platform will simply turn it down to their standard.

Hi to all. Can anybody explain me about LUFS -14 (integrated ). I can't completely understand that stuff. Many people talk about this one. a track should be LUFS -14 and TP -1 for uploading to many music streaming platforms. But when I am listening some music tracks of Top EDM Dj producers from those music platforms (for example Spotify.) I hear their tracks sound loud. Those tracks don't have LUFS -14 . It sounds RMS -3 - 5. LUFS -6-7. When I download a track I hear also RMS -3 -5. LUFS -6 -7. (Just for the record I also check it out in my DAW) If download an EDM track from downloading-buying music platforms that also has RMS -3 - 5. LUFS -6 -7. Djs as well playing their music which is loud. ( RMS -3 -5. LUFS -6 -7) NOT - 14 of LUFS. So guys what's going on? or does Spotify get some tracks which are LUFS -14 and then makes them louder by its own master loudness fader ? Or can I make loud mixes RMS -3-5. LUFS-6-7. to be playing and uploading the same one for each of all streaming platforms?

Honestly, unless you're making music for the club and that 'pressure' effect you get from heavy limiting is part of your sound, then you should be aiming to maximise your dynamics. Make the snappiest, punchiest mix you can without weakening or thinning anything... THAT is the new arms race to replace the outdated loudness war. Crest factor all the way It's a bit like back when everyone wanted to beef up to try and be 80s Arnold Schwarzenegger but then later found out that being lean AND cut was more attractive overall than pure bulk.

@SeanDivine
@SeanDivine 4 жыл бұрын
it depends on the track and how you prefer your dynamics - soft clipping will give you a different effect but if you're pushing it hard, it can affect the transients in a not so pleasant way. I prefer to use a transparent maximizer like Ozone in the video, best of both worlds!

Do you recomend to do the same sort of things on streaming platforms ? I mean Spotify use the same LUFS reference, so if our track is louder, spotify will "reduce" it a little bit (you already explained this in an older video) But still, a master at 14 LUFS seems really.. quiet to me haha. So do you think we can put it a little bit louder even if we have some reduction at the end, or do you think it's better to let our level at 14 LUFS no matter what, even if it's sound not really "loud" ? Or do you just recommend this for youtube ? Thank you for your attention, keep going, love your channel.
@SeanDivine
@SeanDivine 4 жыл бұрын
As I mentioned in the video, I prefer to deliver the master in it's best dynamic form (even if it's louder than -14 LUFS). A proper mix / master will compete regardless, as the reduction doesn't change anything fundamentally. It's only used to create consistency for listeners as they play through different songs.
@ScottPhillipsCreative
@ScottPhillipsCreative 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sean, I've been sending in mine at -12 LUFS and the small reduction is hardly noticeable. Its better that way than sending it in too quiet and then having to limit your song to get it up to volume. Big fan and you always explain everything clearly 👍

@ctsguitar Жыл бұрын
Great video. I’ve started doing exactly this, normalising my average volume to -14 LUFS with a True Peak of -1db, however my videos are still much quieter than others! There doesn’t seem to be any consistency upon testing against other videos on KZfaq, with some playing back at 100%/60% of the original volume while others 100/100% with a loudness reduction of as much as 6db and those videos are still much louder. What is the difference between playback normalisation and context loudness do you know? Statistically none of this makes much sense!
@themattbookpro2266
@themattbookpro2266 Жыл бұрын
Ignored lol all I can say is that volume is how LOUD a sound is and the dB refers to how MUCH of a sound there is. Like how big the polarities are in the waveform, and if it shifts, bends, etc. so if those are the differences between perceived loudness and actual loudness, you can play around with how big some sounds are to get bigger dynamics and still retain that “loud” sound. I usually mix at 0db and then fine tune and set it to -0.1 so when it’s covered to mp3 or others it doesn’t get destroyed.

Hi Sean, I hope you're well and thanks for such an informative film. I have a quick question for you which I suspect has a really simple answer. I've just checked the 'nerd settings' for a video posted on YT and the volume/normalized percentages read 100%/100% but then the content loudness reads -2.9dB. I'm a bit confused because if it reads 100%/100% then shouldn't the content loudness be 0dB ? Can you explain this one for me when you get a spare two seconds ? Warmest regards. Alex
@SeanDivine
@SeanDivine 4 жыл бұрын
hey Alex, -2.9dB there means you're BELOW the LUFS standard of -14, not above it... meaning it will play at 100% with no normalization. Also to note, if you're below -14, KZfaq will NOT bring it up.

Surely, the first time KZfaq played the video back there was no need for it to be normalized.... 100% / 100%.... So it it was 100% / 100%, why did KZfaq see fit to normalize it, yet again? Doesn't sound copacetic to me. 😠

Is Stats for nerds only available on videos you upload to KZfaq on your personal channel or is it available for all videos? Oh you say you can search the top 50 & find the stats for nerds re: Luis normalization! Very cool video Sean, thanks 😊

Can someone tell me why my true peak meter says -6.5 BUT my stereo and master says -0.3? I’ve been really struggling with this.

So basically, my audio should be peaking at -1 Db, right? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm not too knowledgeable on this

yes, that's the "suggested" peak level for most platforms

A lot of my songs squashed hardly by this algorithm...😒 and sounds better and kick harder without youtube limiting... I want to make a preset of limiting and "mix into the limitations of the master"

I know right I hate it so much, it's like I make a song and on my FL Studio. It sounds so amazing, it sounds perfect. But then when it's on KZfaq I can tell that it's being squashed a bit and it doesn't sound how it sounded like when I mixed it and it frustrates me so much, I been just trying my best to get used to it but it still frustrates me from time-to-time.

utube is damn brutal I produced bass music at -2Lufs and got cut down about -12lufs really loud tracks usually lose actual dynamic unless they are posted by record label ;_;

I know right, I hate how this website is like this. It's like why can't we just have our sound at a level that we want.

No. Loudness normalization is intended to create consistency for listeners. It’s not a standard for delivering masters.
