Some of you might wonder why Spanish has stem-change verbs. Well, every Romance language has its own pattern of descension from Latin (but sometimes still shares parts of its pattern with others). Forming a diphthong from a Latin word with a stressed “e” or stressed “o” is sometimes a tradition. Some Romance languages only make those diphthongs in open syllables; some do not make diphthongs in that case. Spanish is probably the only Romance language that makes those diphthongs regardless of whether the syllables are open or closed. The typical idea of forming the diphthongs is to replace the “e” or “o” with the related weak vowel (“i” or “u” respectively) and then add an “e” (as in “cien” or “ciento” from “centum” and “nuevo” from “novus”). That idea is the most noticeable in the stem-change verbs because of the fact that a change exists in Spanish itself and not just with the language’s pattern of descension from Latin. The verb “jugar” has the same type of stem-change as a verb with a stressed “o” in the stem for the infinitive ordinarily does because “jugar” comes from the same nature as those other verbs with a stem change. “Decir” and “pedir” have a rather different nature (like the word root “dict” in English which has a meaning about saying things as “decir” means “to say” in Spanish).

He's an amazing teacher. Reminds me of my Southern Texas Spanish teacher. Two years and took away nothing... Watching it now, in this way, is very different. Much better! But still, this Close to the boarder, spanglish, just enough to communicate, will work. Spanish speakers are prolific in it as well as English speakers trying to communicate in Spanish. It's truly a language all in itself. Spoken and understood.... I took two years of similar Spanish and reality would be just enough to communicate, especially considering Spanish speakers understand, and once you learn the basics, then everything else he says can apply. Real world, just learn the basics of communicating. Then, master the language. His language, mastering. Very different then mastering the basics, basics that translate through our borders.
