I am very proud of Roy Dean, his progress within this amazing art, as well as his accomplishments around the world. He performed so well on this examination that I gave him a 95-98% score (NOTE: Most students pass my examinations with an 80-85% score. So, I could tell he had spent a considerable amount of time preparing for this examination - focusing on the things I asked him to focus on!) Great job Roy!

I felt so emotional because , when I was a white belt I saw your 2 degree black belt test video so much , that it was my go to video before training, and that was a long time ago. Grand master a damn savage

Sparring with the old man at 11:40 when he tried to defend the arm locks, Roy took it easy on him and switched into a choke to avoid hurting the man's joints. Such a class act and very rare in the heat of the moment. Most people testing will try to kill you if their rank is on the line.

I love how the OG moved, resisted and attacked with ease and without strain or relying on strength. He got a position and made you do the work. Very nice.

I watched the video at 4:00 am and towards the end of the video i became emotional and burst into tears. It made me realize how i dealt with my challenges in life. Jiu Jitsu is life.

I remember watching dean from the early days with jimmy da silva as his student. Showing up really is the hardest part, 10 years ago I stopped training after Bluebelt which unfortunately, alot do. By now I potentially should have reached near brown/black belt. If anyone who is just starting training or in it, white/blue, if you love it, dont give up. Life happens, but the longer you are away from something, the harder it is to come back. Dont wait 10 years like I did! Flashy trends, hype, come and go. But the purest form of happiness comes from the hard work you put in to achieve those results as well as milestones. Well done as always professor Dean. And congratulations.

It's one of the more difficult tasks in leadership to have the humility to put yourself out there in the presence of your mentors, peers, and students to demonstrate your competence at the risk of falling short. Not many in jiu jitsu are put in that position at your level. Your skill, drive, and comfort within yourself speak volumes to those coming up in this art. It's so important for people in your position to go where you expect your students to go, and struggle as they do - even as a 4th degree black belt. Actions speak louder than words, and your impact on others through this process is immeasurable. As a 44-year-old blue belt, I'm inspired to press on and to always try and be an example to others at any age and at any rank. Thank you...and congratulations on a long journey well traveled.

Everyone who trains jiu-jitsu knows that feeling of getting cooked under someone and the mental fatigue that happens which is more of the battle that the physical exhaustion which is horrible in its own right! I really think grappling is the most beautiful form of martial art, it's so personal and raw that there is no place for excuses, if there are weaknesses people will exploit, but because of that people that you train with will make you stronger and better. I have practiced no BJJ and it is glaringly obvious how the real lessons being taught here about consideration, respect and humility. It shines through even to someone like me who knows next to nothing about the art. Simply outstanding.

I’ve only recently started getting into watching BJJ and this video fascinated me, it really shows the levels to this sport. You sparring with the master and getting him in the choke at the end nearly brought a tear to my eye, could really see how exhausted you were and can’t imagine the overcoming feeling you must of felt. Man, at one point Roy escaped from side control, recovered guard, but then ended up right back underneath Mr. Harris' side mount a few seconds later. As soon as I read thank you for your support over the years I began to cry; I remember having my arm broken by not tapping to an Americana back in 2007. I had been training for 3 weeks and was severely depressed an unmotivated until I came across one of your videos that motivated me to continue training. I am now going for my black belt exam In June. It is interesting to see how an instructor rolls vs how a student/team mate rolls against you. You can see clearly how Harris is going at like 1%, strength and intensity wise, but rolling calculatedly to evaluate specific aspects of Roy's game and see how he solves problems he throws at him. You can tell how both are thinking 3,4,5 moves ahead and putting in as much brain effort as muscular exertion. Great video.

I've been wondering about this test. It was feeling overdue. Amazing how Roy plowed through the other brown and black belts. I'd be curious to see how Dean and Harris would match up if they were closer in weight. Harris appears to have a huge weight advantage.

I’ve been watching his DVDs for years from white to brown belt and I’m still blown away by his level of skill. As impressive as the demos and sparring were against higher belts I think to have the last one with a fresh instructor of Harris’s experience showed more heart than any match I’ve ever watched. Even when you could see he couldn’t even breath any more he fought to the bitter end and still went for subs. A true warrior.

What a beautiful Video. I have been toying with the idea of joining a local Jiu Jitsu guild/dojo near me. The world i find is in chaos and i feel as though it will help restore a balance i have needed since the passing of my late (and wonderful) mother. I feel that, with martial arts, there always seems to be an undertone of philosophy that permeates, that resonates with my own personality. I'm a deep thinker by nature, and the more i lean into taking up Jiu-Jitsu, the more i find im at peace. Watching these transitions was SO helpful in understanding the technical aspect of the form. Really appreciate you taking the effort to get this documented and upload.

First of all, let me start off by saying that Roy Dean is a stone-cold monster at Jiu Jitsu. Secondly, the Master- Roy Harris- is hands down the best tactician I have seen on KZfaq. There is a reason his gi is green- bc he is cool as a cucumber. Both are amazing.

I love the cinematic quality of this video. When @Roy Harris is going over all the ways others have failed, they start putting in the heartbeat. It started to bring back the feeling of when I was testing (only for blue belt), where you start to wonder if there is anything you could have spent more time on...anything else that needed further refining for the exam.
