One light photography techniques are the first thing a photographer transitioning into using studio lights should learn. These techniques can later be combined into creating a combined lighting look.
In this video, you will go on set with photographer Ab Sesay as he walks you through three one-light setups using a Profoto 3x4 Softbox, Profoto Deep XL Silver Umbrella, and Profoto Tele-zoom Reflector. He then combines the use of all these light shapers into a single lighting look. All the looks can be used for both fashion and beauty images. He shows the benefits of using a Sekonic light meter to get all the different lighting setups dialed in, as well a color checker to make sure all the colors stay consistent. He also demonstrates the benefits of the new Profoto Air Remote to easily navigate each lighting setup.
Ab Sesay also discusses some best practices, such as the type of light stand and grip he recommends using.
Get ready for an easy-to-follow and concise guide to one-light setups.

Thanks for another terrific video. While I’m guessing most clients would choice Option #4, my favorite was #1. Hey Ab great tutorial! For me I like the look one the most because it gives the sunlight effect. But i was having a little difficulty on how you metered in the very first example. @AbSesayPhoto

Hi Trinicapone. Yes if the front of the model metered F5.6 then I would shoot at F9.0 this under exposing the front of our model. This causes the back of our model not to be over exposed as much.

Ab, great video as usual. For what she’s wearing, I like the middle look, the one with the silver umbrella and diffusion. But I like the option as you showed, to add in quick beauty shots with the sport reflector. For me, the first angelic, ethereal back light would be for another type of look. Question, does the new Profoto remote work with the GFX 100s, I notice you using that to fire the D2s for metering but using the old one for triggering when shooting? Also, I assume you upgraded your D2 firmware for the new remote. I have B1Xs so no full compatibility with power readout etc., as of yet if ever.
@AbSesayPhoto
@AbSesayPhoto Жыл бұрын
Hi Pierre. Love your input on which you prefer. I feel like the Umbrella is winning overall. Currently, I only have the new remote for my cannon and not my GFX, but I plan on getting a Fuji or Universal version this month. I shot this close to two months ago prior to the new firmware coming out. I upgraded to the new firmware this weekend and I LOVE IT! Being able to see the power each light is at is ver helpful.

@AbSesayPhoto
@AbSesayPhoto Жыл бұрын
Hi John. I am very partial to the hard light myself. The magnums totally different. the Telezoom throws a solid 20-30 beam of light that is not to hot in the center depending on how you focus is, and still works great on heads with recessed reflectors. In my book it the sexiest hard light shaper ever made. It just hits different.

@AbSesayPhoto

it would definitely work. The sofbox and umbrella or a combination of both for sure. The Telezoom would need to get pulled back for more even coverage, but a light meter would help easily dial that in.

Great demo 😊and i learned something from your tips ... oh and I almost fell off my seat when I clicked on the link to the reflector 🙄 Curious if it's possible to manage a similar look to the tele reflector by using either a beauty dish or a bare reflective umbrella i.e. withouth diffusion (assuming it's silver)?
@vickosis
@vickosis Жыл бұрын
PS Although I kinda like all four setups I'd probably be tempted to try a combo of 1 and 2, and not just because I don't have such a reflector; I'd probably also change light setup 1 by either removing the v-flats or changing the ratio by moving the model a little closer to the background while slightly lowering power so we get less reflection from the v-flats, but hopefully still that "angelic" vibe and adding light setup 2 into the mix as my key with more or less the same power/distance to model. Also I might try light setup 1 as show in the demo with the reflective umbrella minus the diffusion, to add specularity, although I'd probably place this a lot further away from the model, likely behind the camera and to one side Perhaps these setups would also work, but then again I may loose the benefit of having all 3 one light setups ready to go ... and the ability to create a good variety of shots in a short space of time like you planned. Hmmm ... perhaps I need to start thinking more about my light setups🤔
@AbSesayPhoto
@AbSesayPhoto Жыл бұрын
To get a similar look id use a beauty dish with a grid or a normal reflector with a grid. You can also test sports reflectors from other manufactures as well. I find that this one works the best. I find it lighting characteristics very unique.

I like the first single light set up the best as it is very subtle and the three light set up because of the crispness. it is nice to know the sports dish could be used in place of a magnum reflector. Thanks Ab and have a good new week.😎👍🇨🇦

What is a light meter. Sorry I’m new to this and not a pro at all, I just need to take pictures of my clothing line 😊

The light meter lets me know what my camera settings need to be based on the lighting. It lets me choose two of the following ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture, and it will tell me what the other should be. Also when using flash it helps me dial in the proper settings based on the power of the flash.

Great video, can't wait for the rest in this series. I see so many photographers that are not formally trained that are afraid of strobes. What is Haley's insta?
