The second speech in a WSD is absolutely critical to the outcome of the round. The second speaker has to juggle numerous responsibilities: framing the debate in a strategic way, efficiently refuting the other side's case, and often introducing a third substantive argument.
There are countless strategies for the second speech (or simply the 2) in WSD. Jake Zeng will cover the responsibilities of the 2 and explain different methods for preparing and structuring the 2. Jake will use examples from American and international competition to demonstrate how top competitors approach the 2.
Jake Zeng has been debating since 5th grade. After being accepted to the 2022-2023 USA Development Team, he switched to World Schools Debate and has been doing it ever since. He competes with debaters from around the world, having won the 2022 Blake Holiday Debates and the 2022 Intertext Open, and semifinaling the 2023 UAE and 2023 Zimbabwe International Championships. In the last two years, Jake has reached the top 32 teams at NSDA Nationals. Jake only succeeded in Worlds because of the kind, caring guidance of several mentors with experience in the event - and wishes to return the favor to the next generation.
