- Mike's Historical Training Handbooks Efforts -
Mike discussed his efforts to collect and share the historical training handbooks for aircraft maneuvers. He explained that his goal was to provide a streamlined reference for the original maneuvers, without the additional information and illustrations found in more recent versions. Mike also emphasized that while he was happy to answer questions during his CFI classes, he preferred not to be contacted after class with further queries. He encouraged participants to find and share any older handbooks they might come across.
- Cfi Training and Motivation Discussion -
Mike highlighted the significance of motivation in learning and shared his plans to present on the Cfi Facebook Cfi study group, a platform for people in Cfi training to seek advice and share their queries. He emphasized the need for a more systematic approach in Cfi training to better align with practical situations, expressing concern over people's tendency to falter due to the disconnect between training and real-world scenarios. Mike also stressed the importance of staying present during online classes to fully grasp the information being presented and hinted at further discussions in an upcoming meeting on Tuesday. Lastly, he referred to Steve's viral as a topic to be discussed.
- Steep Spiral Maneuver and Chandel Evolution -
Mike discussed the history and purpose of the steep spiral maneuver, which was initially designed to help trainees understand their limits and prevent accidents. He also explained the development and purpose of the Steve Spiral and the maneuvering technique for an aircraft in relation to wind conditions. Furthermore, he clarified the spiral approach to landing, the phenomenon of the 'steep spiral', and the evolution of the Chandel maneuver. Lastly, he shared his strategy for executing a 'box canyon turn' in constrained banking and expressed his thoughts on 'Sparky Iveson's Mountain Flying Bible', promising to provide a copy of the 'Flight Training Handbook' for further reference.
- Flight Training Handbooks Sharing -
Mike introduced the attendees of the meeting, including new and returning members. He also mentioned a request to join a Facebook study group, emphasizing its potential benefits. The main task of the meeting was to upload and share the 'Flight Training Handbooks, 1965-2024' from his Dropbox to a common location, with a particular folder created for this purpose. The upload process was ongoing during the meeting, and Mike committed to sharing the link to the Dropbox folder once the task was complete.
- Mastering Fundamentals and Developing Feel -
Mike stressed the importance of mastering the fundamental principles of flying and developing a strong sense of feel for the aircraft. He criticized the reliance on text and the use of the Lazy 8 maneuver as a shortcut, arguing it could lead to a lack of situational awareness. He also highlighted the complexities of aircraft control, specifically the use of rudder and adverse yaw. Mike pointed out that these concepts are not adequately covered in the current pilot's handbook and planned to revisit this issue.
- Lazy 8 Maneuver Technique and Timing -
Mike emphasized the importance of precise airspeed and pitch attitude control during the Lazy 8 maneuver in flight training. He stressed that the airspeed should gradually decrease from the start to the approximate stalling speed, and if it doesn't, there's something wrong with the technique. Mike also pointed out that the pitch attitude should be 45 degrees at the 90-degree point, and the airspeed should be 5 to 10 knots above stall to ensure the turn is completed successfully. He further advised that the maneuver should be timed with specific reference points and should not be automated, as it requires positive aircraft control.
