My favourite watercolor technique is working wet on wet. In this video I will demonstrate how I used the wet on wet technique to paint a duck and its reflection on calm water.

Masterful work, as usual. Your photography, diction, and delivery contribute to your exceptional skills as a teacher. The struggle with using too much vs. too little water is ever present for me. Your skill with a limited palette is outstanding for harmony. Hazel Soan's new book, "The Art of the Limited Palette" explores this in detail. My collection has not had a new member in years, but this is one I highly recommend. She did an interview about on KZfaq. Oh my, that reflection was amazing! Putting in that elongated "second eye" made it look as if you could reach out and touch the water. It gave the water a sense of movement while still being calm. I dont know why that specific element caught me as it did, but I stopped the video at the end and just stared at it for a moment. This was just beautifully done.

May you show us how paint a fish. I know you have before but it be nice to see more of a brawny fish such as a red fish or rainbow trout. I dont know your situation on how you find things to paint but it would be helpful😅❤

Excellent tutorial! Love that you explain everything as you are doing it. Could you tell me how you decide between cold press and hot press paper? Do you find the paint and water behave the same on either one?

Thank you! I prefer to paint on cold press. I used to paint a lot on hot press when I was licensing my work because it reproduces better. I have quite a bit of hot press paper here at home and I am slowly working my way through it. This duck could have been painted on cold press paper. I've realised wet on wet is where my backgrounds are going wrong - and I definitely like to have a background. I tried to improve a background yesterday adding more colour, and gouache and it really didn't work😢. Annoying as I spent ages painting the bird! I also realised that the direction of the brush stroke is v important. I wanted a visible brush stroke vignette type style. I think the other mistake I made was putting too much water and not enough pigment

There is no buckling in your paper at all and I didn’t notice any tape. Are you working on a block?

As usual, I'm looking forward to to painting your quacky little ducky, but I just have to ask you -- and I've been meaning to for years -- exactly WHAT is the humidity like in Australia? Because here in the South in the U.S., I gotta say, my watercolor paper (especially HOT press) is not going to stay wet for anywhere near as long as yours stays wet in Australia! No, ma'am, not even CLOSE! 😂😛 I even bought a humidifier and added a few drops of synthetic ox gall (by QOR) to my water jar, but I am not getting anywhere near the amount of working time that you get!! Can people in Australia just skip moisturizing their skin? Is the air there that filled with water? If so, I may just pack my bags and head on over there (not much going for the U.S. right now, you may have heard 🤕 (I guess more people are watercoloring to get away from reality, eh?) But seriously, I've always wondered, what IS the average humidity level over there? I just looked ours up where I live, and today's humidity is 62 percent outside, but I live in a drafty 150-year-old house that I guarantee does not have 62 percent humidity inside, probably half that. All I know is, it is dry as a bone in here! Sorry for the long comment; guess I'm just jealous of your humid weather? That's ridiculous... well, looking forward to the ducky, nonetheless!!

Hi Vickie, Lol- move to OZ and we could paint together! As we speak the current humidity level where I live is at 72%. I prefer dry heat over the hot sticky weather we often get. Maybe try wetting your paper twice. Wet it really well and let it soak in and start to dry then wet it again really well and try painting. Maybe that will help.

Good question Vickie and great suggestion Louise. I live in Western Australia and it’s dry as a bone here in the summer. I’m quite a slow painter so I like the idea of wetting twice and also wetting in sections, leaving a soft edge and then re wetting before continuing. Loved this tutorial as always ❤

@@LouiseDeMasi Oh, I started re-wetting about three years ago after picking that tip up from one of your earlier tutorials! LOL. And to make sure I'm not missing those quick-drying edges on really dry days, I also picked up from another tutorial the ol' second damp brush in your other hand (or same hand) to clean up those edges - sigh. It's a never-ending process in MY house, where I half-expect my painting to self-combust from the dryness and heat!! HaHA!!

Hi Im Marilyn, I am interested in learning watercolour painting, but im not good at drawing real life images, im a real estate photographer, and use Photoshop with touch ups when portraits are given to me to improve or enhance. My mother was a painter but i couldnt learn what she was doing with her art work. Not a good drawer either. but have never tried to paint a photo. I am unclear as too what artists mean when they caution not to overwork a painting. Would you be able to show us an example of what overworking looks like sometime? 20:43 20:43

Generally - overworking for me is when I spend too much time fussing with an area on the painting or the whole painting. Because watercolour is transparent, it shows on the finished painting if I have had difficulty in one area. I get in my mind that I want it to look a certain way and I keep trying to make the paint do what I want it to do instead of accepting what it has given me. I might layer too much paint and then it loses it's freshness and it looks muddy.
