I am forever grateful you explained a VCA in this video. I've used mastering services before and they have explained that -6db is an optimal level for mastering. It's virtually impossible to hit that level using all your separate tracks. This cleared up exactly how I could accomplish that moving forward! Thanks Sean

you can easily make your low end mono by putting a channel eq sides mode on your master, and then highpass the sides till the desired frequency (so no fancy plugins are needed)
@SeanDivine

Hey Sean! Thanks for the great vid. Was wondering what your thoughts are on Analog style EQs such as the AMEK vs more modern surgical ones like the Pro Q3. I find I have more freedom in identifying a couple of the hissy, problem frequencies that I could very surgically get rid of. Would love to know why you prefer vintage ones over the Pro Q3 or an equivalent of it.
@SeanDivine
@SeanDivine 2 жыл бұрын
I have Pro Q3 (and many other EQs as well). It’s great for dynamic EQ processing and surgical moves like you’re talking about. The analog modeled EQs provide more “colored” and unique curves that work great for certain situations. Just different brushes to paint with, so to speak!

One thing I did notice that you didn't mention for the people who aren't familiar with your rig is that you weren't using a spectrum analyzer. I know you have the tc hardware but without that knowledge your eq moves seemed preset and premeditated.
@SeanDivine
@SeanDivine 2 жыл бұрын
Noted. Important to also note that I don't suggest relying on a spectrum analyzer to inform EQ moves. It is helpful as a secondary reference but we're listening to balance overall tone.
@emmettwalker2598
@emmettwalker2598 2 жыл бұрын
@@SeanDivine yes sir, I totally agree that using your ears is 100% necessary in any stage of audio but for the producers and engineers with untrained or unfamiliar ears it definitely can assist as a secondary guide especially in mastering to associate tone with frequency and to quickly locate problem frequency spiked areas in a master situation. Another great video btw.

I love your videos! Though, I have a question. Why do you keep your sub in the back corner of the room as opposed to closer in front of you under your monitors?
@SeanDivine
@SeanDivine 2 жыл бұрын
My room has a strange shape... there's a large empty space on the other side, the subs would travel and sound way too loud! It doesn't have to be right in front of you. I'd suggest experimenting for best placement.

Do you like to use bx_limiter True Peak when you master tracks with vocals too? How do you know which limiters suit a specific track?
@SeanDivine

I just started using it recently and yes, works great with vocals also! Every limiter reacts a bit differently and with experience you'll start to develop "go to" options according to what your sessions call for :)

Hey, Sean, I made a beat in Logic Pro and when I bounced it to an MP3 file, it sounds great on both my left and right ear buds. But when I remove an ear bud, the song switches to mono and some of my instruments are removed and it isn’t until I wear both ear buds (which switches the track to stereo) that I can hear the full entirety of the track. ChatGPT blames this issue on Logic’s stereo spread plug in that i used on the master bus but I’ve never had the issue on previous sessions. Is there anything I can do so that my track isn’t missing elements when it’s switched to mono? Thanks for the awesome video as well. VCA track comes in handy for sure.
@SeanDivine
@SeanDivine Жыл бұрын
They'd completely disappear if they are out of phase. I would try putting the gain plugin on the instruments with issues and flip the phase button, see if it still happens.

Sean, there was an instrumental you produced that was really great but I cannot seem to find it. You made it a good few years back. I cannot remember the title but I believe it had an orange background while the instrumental was playing. It had a female voice every few bars going "yeahaye" and it started out with synth saws. What happened to it? (if you remember which one I mean that is)

Which is wack because my beats are cool but underrepresented by the mixes. Frustrating!
